It's usually just them learning to vocalize. It's pretty common.

Here's some advice on how to mitigate it:

Thanks Danny, I came across that website when i was frantically looking for some answers. The only thing is my son is barely 6 months old and most of the advise on the site I won't be able to use for a little while. I hope he won't be doing it 6 months from now :(

It is reassuring to here that its pretty common though.

I was starting to have vision of my son growing up to be this guy. :D

Did you use Mylicon? That stuff is far too expensive for the amount you get but its a lifesaver. We also started using Gripe water as of late and it seems to work really well.

Mylicon can really be a lifesaver. The other thing about mylicon is the taste. The name brand Mylicon drops taste a lot better than the generic (Target and Wal-mart brands at least) and our daughter would not try to spit it out when she was an infant.

Get a tennis ball tube and stuff it with a t-shirt. Teach him to yell into that.

Instant Muffler!

When he does it, stop running to him. Ignore him completely, when he stops speak to him in a soft voice.

Trust me Ben, good times are ahead. But I would get your sleep in now, if I were you!

That's what I keep hearing. The problem is I already have insomnia.

We did. Worth every penny. haha!

I'd say we probably bought 2-3 bottles total before she didn't seem to need it anymore, so not bad overall.

That actually might come in handy, believe it or not. Years of bartending messed up my sleeping schedule, although I did have a little bit of a hard time falling asleep early before that. But even though i haven't bartended in over 10 years now I still have a hard time falling asleep before 1 or 2.

With a new baby in the house, it has worked out well for my wife and I. She wakes up very early to go to work so she goes to sleep early, like 8-9pm most nights. I stay up and take the late shift taking care of the baby. Put him to sleep if he hasn't already by the time my wife goes to sleep. He usually wakes up around midnight so i take care him of then.

By the time he wakes up again around 3-4am my wife has slept for around 6 hours so she wakes up take care of him and go back to sleep for a couple more hours before she has to start getting ready for work.

So, you can use your insomnia to your advantage.:D This is probably one of the rare times where it can come in handy. Well, that and increasing your post count on CZ.

My almost 6 months old son has started screeching/yelling at a very high pitch non stop for hours. It's like we have a little banshee for a son all of a sudden. He is not crying or needs anything in particular and he is often smiling when he does it.

We looked it up thinking there might be something wrong but everything we've read says that it is very common. At some point babies find that they can make noises and they're just attempting to vocalize or practice their new found skill.

It was very cute at first and it still is to some extent but the wife and I are starting to get headaches from these very high pitch screeching episodes. We realize there isn't much we can do about it and we just have to let it play out. Apparently it can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months.

For those of you who have children or have had some experience with this particular issue, how do/did you cope? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Stay at home for dinner and do not get on any flights. :laugh2:

We were out at a restaurant about a week ago, right when he started his new habit, and he started screaming as soon as our food was brought up to the table:mad: Needless to say we didn't stay long.

It will get better, just a phase. I think they like hearing their own noise and of course have no concept that it is like raking finger nails across a black board for adults. :laugh2:
