Sean Lee taking the pay cut, just elevated the Dallas linebacker group to the best in the NFL.

He now adds to:

...Vander Esch recorded 102 solo tackles (140 total) in 2018. He ended the year as the third highest tackler in the entire league despite only playing the 36th most snaps among linebackers (754), per Pro Football Focus (PFF).

But Vander Esch is not just a run-stopping linebacker. He also excels at playing in coverage. Vander Esch grabbed two interceptions and also added seven pass deflections to his resume. To put that level of production in perspective, the entire defense only managed to intercept opposing quarterbacks nine times.

The young player, nicknamed the “Wolf Hunter”, is now a fan favorite of Cowboys’ nation. For years the Cowboys were one bad hamstring away from having a glaring weakness in the front seven. Heading into 2019, Dallas now has the best linebacking core in the NFL with Vander Esch’s consistency to hold the unit together...

It’s a good look for Sean, but it’s probably best to compare him to David West or someone, lol. If Sean Lee was still at the height of his powers like 26 year old pre-Heat LeBron, he’d be gone already.

Ring brats are players who go to other teams for the specific purpose of giving themselves a primo chance to get a ring.

West doesn't qualify.

So pretty much every free agent not solely motivated by money? What else is there?

There is nothing honorable about what Kevin Durant did.

There is nothing honorable about what Wade, Bosh and LBJ conspired to do.

There is everything honorable about what Sean's doing.

If nothing else, we ought to be able to agree it's a totally different attitude and mindset.

isn't Lee's stated purpose a title ring ? is staying for one all that different from leaving for one?

Yes. And yes.

Let me try this way.

If Sean left to go to New England, then he'd be a ring brat... if Tom Brady was about 10 years younger, he'd be a ring brat in the way that Durant is a ring brat.

I don't ever criticize a player for chasing a ring or chasing cash. A ring is great but cash pays the bills.

Not much of a choice on Lee's part, rework the deal or get cut. It's doubtful he would make as much, even after the reworking of his contract, with another team and it's also debatable how many teams would make a run for an oft injured LB on the wrong side of 30. If Lee really thought he could still make $7+ million and start for another contender, he probably wouldn't have opted to rework his contract and let Dallas cut him.

Mine is a different take

I don't criticize a player chasing cash. There's a limited amount of time in that kind of career. You've got to capitalize while you can. And players don't enter the Hall of Fame on the basis of their salaries.

Practically guaranteeing yourself a ring in the way some of these have done is a cop out.
