Trade value wise, Kuechly (#9) cost the equivalent of 4x Sean Lee (#55).

The real question should be, would you take 4 players like Sean Lee on your team or just 1 Kuechly.

Sean Lee dropped to the 2nd round BECAUSE of his injury history -- which has generally out played out in the NFL as well.

The best player in the world isn't going to help you win championships if he isn't dependable.

I'm not saying Lee is quite to that level yet... but if he can't player 13+ games this season, then I'd say he'll never fulfill his potential.

The Cowboys basically have Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, Gavin Escobar and part of Morris Claiborne for the equivalent of what Kuechly would have cost.

That's great... Sean Lee and Bruce Carter together can almost give you one full season of games....

Who said anything about draft position?
The OP sure didn't.

Btw, knowing our draft history, we just as easily could have taken 4 massive busts...so that is all theoretical.

I guess that would be a more fair question though: who would you take, Kuechly or Lee at their respective draft positions?
You would then have a legit debate, because ll that time missed by Lee does not hurt quite as bad due to him being picked much later. If he had been picked in the top 10 or so, it would be a disaster.

Lee was the better value in terms of draft position.
Kuechly is more reliable healthwise and is younger.

Kuechly and Lee are both very productive when healthy.

I love Lee, but you can't count on him staying healthy. I would take Kuechly for that reason alone.

BTW, it's amazing how many players are on this team you can't rely on because of health issues. Demarco Murray, Miles Austin, Jay Ratliff, Bruce Carter

Lee has to stay healthy.........When he does that, I'll trust him....If he has another injury year this year,,it's time to start looking for a replacement!!

First 6 games of 2012:

Sean Lee: 58-Comb, 36-Solo, 22-Ast, 1-FF, 1-Int, 3-PD

Luke Kuechly: 51-Comb, 27-Solo, 24-Ast, 0-FF, 1-Int, 3-PD

Lee is around the ball more which shows how great his awareness is especially with the amount of Solo tackles he had and the fact he had 1 more turnover than Kuechly. Lee doesn't get that freak toe injury(his wrist injury in 2011 being a freak injury as well but he still played with a cast on did pretty well considering especially him picking off Eli Manning with it on), at the rate he was going Kuechly would've been dusted. Also Lee didn't finish the Carolina game either so those stats could've been more had he not gotten injured. People say that Lee has "health concerns" which is incorrect. Miles Austin has "health concerns", Lee is just a victim of bad luck so gimme Lee any day even with the older age.

I don't think that is a true apples to apples comparison, since Kuechly did not move to ILB until the fifth game of the season. For example, I believe Kuechly recorded 59 tackles in his last five games of the season.

Good topic though. Lee was looking like a DPOY candidate prior to his injury and Kuechly ended up as DROY while leading the league in tackles.

These threads where you compare a Cowboy player that everyone likes to a player on another team are always tough.

The OP did make the imaginary qualification that if both were healthy.

All we can go by is what we have so far.
Kuechely has been inthe league 1 year, Lee for 3 years.

Here is the actual data.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/K/KuecLu00.htm

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/L/LeexSe99.htm

Kuechly: 16/16 games, 165 tackels (102 solo), 1 int, 2 int, 0 FF, 3 FR, 8 PD

Lee: 35/48 games, 185 tackels (125 solo), 0 sacks, 7 int, 2 FF, 1 FR, 12 PD

These are the numbers delivered for the time each team has had (and paid) each player; 1 year and 3 years respectively.

On a per season basis.

KUECHLY:
16 games per season,
165 tackes per season
102 solo tackels per season
1 sack per season
2 int per season
0 Forced fumbles per season (rec by either team)
3 Fumbles recovered per season
8 passes defended per season

LEE:
11.7 games per season
61.7 tackels per season
41.7 solo tackels per season
0 sacks per season
2.3 int per season
.7 Forced Fumbles per season (rec by either team)
.3 Fumbles recovered per season
4 passes defended per season

The bottom line that is Kuechly almost has as much TOTAL production in one year that Lee has had in three years.

But this is a new year.
IF (huge if) they both stay healthy, I'm excited to see how well they both will play.

Have to take into account the system each played in, we should expect Kuechely to have much more production than Lee. This season will be very telling for how the rest of Lee's career will turn out. Both guys are at the top of the league at their positions IMO. If you take into account draft status I'd take Lee. I don't know as much about the intangible side of Kuechely, but I do think I have a good feel for that in Lee's game. Lee is going to be the heart and soul leader of this defense from now on. The Tampa 2 switch has given him the opportunity to become a bonafide superstar on a league wide basis. I can't wait to see him play this season.

Lee won't be the only person that the Tampa 2 will make a bonafide star league wide......Bruce Carter will also blow it up and will probably make Lee/Carter the best LB duo in the NFL if all ends up like we think it will.
