I don't see why that's a cheap shot? That's a nasty good block on Tates part.

He led with his helmet and snapped up under Lee's chin. That was legal in 1974 but they used to give players smelling salts and send them right back out there then too.

I understand the issues with protecting quarterbacks and receivers that basically boil down to NFL owners protecting their dollars but when it comes to head injuries I am completely onboard with what they are doing.

I don't think you should be allowed to spear or target the head with the helmet but I have no problem with crackback blocks or hitting a player the minute he touches the ball but according the rules, nothing about it was clean. It was dirty and leading with the crown of your helmet, hitting another player in the chin like that, that was dirty when I played and it still is. Just saying.
Guess I played against dirty players cause I've taken way more flagrant shots. The difference in this shot being legal today is about six inches, that's well within my margin of error for clean/dirty and legal/illegal.

Head injuries could seriously damage the game, going forward. Financially, it's a huge issue for the NFL and the NCAA. For the sport itself, we see declining numbers and that's going to impact the game. As Fans of the Sport, we should all be concerned about this issue.

We all played against dirty players. It's still dirty thou. Spearing has never been a clean play but it didn't become illegal until 76. Ironically enough, the majority of injuries happen to the player who is spearing. Spinal Cord injuries and Concussions are much higher if you spear.

If you love this sport, you better find a way to get behind these rule changes because what's going on now is going to kill the sport if left to go unchecked. It's really as simple as that to me. The Game I played 35/40 years ago is gone. It's never coming back. If we are not careful here, this game will be gone all together in another 20 years.

What's going to kill the game is advertising and over officiating

I'm surprised at the number of people who seem to think this kind of hit is okay.

Yet they also seem to think retaliation/a penalty flag is warranted?

yea, I don't get it...the hit was fine, but we should have ended his season, yea that makes sense.

to me it was a dirty shot because he launched with his helmet under Lee's face mask/chin strap

I don't have any complaint about the hit. Tell you what...some Cowboy should have evened the score. In the old days ole Golden wouldn't have finished the game. Thats my only problem with that play. Think Randy White or Cliff Harris would have let that slide? No way!

So you don't have a problem with the hit, yet you are disappointed that someone didn't retaliate?

I thought this was pretty much buried after the playoff game. I recall Tate saying something about expecting physicality, and he got squared up on a kick or punt return, and that seems to be the end of it.

 Read the stupid rule book before you post.

That is clearly a shot to the head AND leading with the helmet AND launching yourself. (spearing) That is THREE infractions in one hit.

Jesus people.

I love it when people tell other people to know the rules, even become indignant, yet, they don't know what they arre talking about themselves.

1) Spearing as defined by the NFL, comes from the crown of the helmet. Tate was head up, and never used the top of his helmet. As you would say. "Jesus"

2) Launching, as defined by the NFL, requires a player to leave both of his feet with the purpose of springing. Tate's feet never left the ground. Again , "Jesus"

3)There was never a hit to the head. Even Lee said the hit was to the chest. Yep... "Jesus"

Cmon man!!!

Now with all that being said, the NFL still fined Tate for an illegal blindside block. Was it? Probably. But still debatable. The issue was the celebration by a 180lb punk getting the better of Lee on that play. Make the hit and keep playing without bringing attention to yourself.

Know the rules, or don't tell people to know the rules.

The Officiating part, isn't that really part of the same issue? The Officiating is a direct result of the legal issues involved. Nobody likes over officiating. All of this costs the NFL money. They are doing this for a reason.

The game is going to go away because they are hitting the safety issue at the lower levels. In a few years all tackle football below high school will be flag. Then kids will get to high school and not know how to hit and play properly. It will be a dominoe effect.

Tate did get a good lick the last game we played. It was on his first carry as a punt returner I believe.

So we agree the NFL is doomed, awesome! Glad we found some common ground, you know, outside of a few thousand posts on a fan board

I don't think its cheap either. I'm not gonna think its cheap if he comes on a crossing route and gets blown up either. If you make that kind of block than you need to be ready for whats coming around.

No, I would not say that. I would say that you are trying to fit your words into my response. I did not say the NFL was doomed. I said you better get right with all of this BS if you want Football to survive.

This was the greatest revenge hit in the history of the NFL, it doesn't get better than this.

Dang, ok then kill it now and save us the pain of watching it slowly die.

Or pour money into safety equipment R&D that allows the game to be played the way it was meant to, where shots like Tate's happen and ESPN can have the damn you got *** up son segment or whatever it was called.

The equipment issue is interesting because its not really a materials issue as much as a physical space issue. How big do we really want to make helmets.... I've started to agree with the less is more line of thinking. I think the game would be played in a much safer manor if helmets weren't used at all.
