Sean Payton: a few years back in NY, he was relieved of play calling duties.

Is this a joke?

Sorry, but show some knowledge of the game. Dallas has two games this year in which it went 4-4 and 5-5 in TDs in the Red Zone. We are what... the 5th ranked offense. We are scoring 22 points a game -- our highest average in years.

And you want Payton "relieved of play calling duties?"

That's insane. Some people need to realize there is a defense on the other side of the ball. Yes, it's true. Sometimes I think some of you guys think we're running plays against air... Not true. This defense game plans. And sometimes, heaven forbid, they stop you.

Yes, it happens. If some of you guys were in charge, half the coaches in the league would be fired every week.

I think it was in the 2002 season. Maybe wrong in the year. But I distinctly remember that Fassell, NYG coach at the time, decided he needed to call the plays himself during the season. I don't remember details like why, etc.

Will Parcells do the same? Has Parcells not yet fathomed something Fassell figured out?

I'm glad you pointed it out to us, after all we never would have known.

You're joking right? There's really a defense on the other side??? OK that changes everything...22 points is more then enough per game with Witten, Glenn, Keys, and JJ. :banghead:

This is great if 5-11 is acceptable to you....

Well, yes it probably is. But you really can't have 28, then 13, then 34, then 13. They need to work a bit on consistency, but for goodness sakes, should we give Payton maybe say, 8 games? How about it guys? Half a season before we fire him?

Given that the offense looks better than it has in years, I vote we give him 8 games. If we're not scoring 40 points each and every game by then, well screw Payton!

And that's a true story folks.....

Not entirely.

Payton was relieved of his playcalling duties in 2002, and was fired that offseason. The Giants went to the Super Bowl in 2000, so Fassel didn't take over and raise the offense to elite status and bring them to the SB that year as the post you call true states. The Giants had the "Trey Junkin" fiasco in 2002 vs. the 49ers in the play-offs thatyear.

He didn't begin calling plays for the Giants until 2001, so whoever said he was calling plays in their Super Bowl year is also wrong.

No. The guy who said that Payton called the plays in the 2nd half of the Giants SB year was correct. He was relieved of those duties the next year by Fassel. I live in Jersey and hear/read about the Giants every day. I remember thinking that this guy went from hero to goat in a very short period of time.

"Payton joined Jim Fassel's staff as the quarterbacks coach on Feb. 3, 1999. He was assigned play-calling duties from Fassel prior to a game against the Jets on Dec. 5, 1999, and was named offensive coordinator following that season. Payton remained offensive coordinator through the 2002 season, though Fassel had taken back the play-calling responsibilities prior to a game against Jacksonville on Nov. 2."

"Remember, however, when the Giants made their big Super Bowl push a few years ago. Fassel removed himself as the play-caller at midseason and turned the responsibilities over to Payton..."
