If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have had the interview.
...you interview prospective candidates. It does hurt to interview him (unless you're in Miami), whether you had any intention of signing him is another thing.
You're a dreamer if you think he beats the fellow candidates to such an extent that warrants the loss of a 1st Rd pick.

Payton would have full roster control if he takes a HC job....draft, FA, etc. He is not going anywhere that he is dictated to by a GM or an owner about player choices. Can you see Jones and Son doing that?

This makes zero sense. How is he a prospective candidate’ if as you say there’s ‘no chance’ that anyone would give up their 1st round pick?

You're a dreamer if you think he beats the fellow candidates to such an extent that warrants the loss of a 1st Rd pick.
And yet he’s getting interviews with virtually every team with an opening. Who have been told the cost up front.

I know who’s dreaming…

I wouldn't hire Payton. I'd rather have a young hungry guy personally.
And there's no way I'd pay the saints compensation just to hire him.

Sorry, but I think that “control “ talk is a myth.

Mike McCarthy has gotten whatever he’s wanted or needed.

And so would Sean Payton.

It’s not like he was some control freak type in New Orleans.

He coached, and Mickey Loomis and the front office handled personnel.

This control talk is a fallacy.
Long suffering cowboys fans think Jerry controls everything from the food Buffett in the press box to what the social media team tweets out. They think he has his hands in everything. He lives rent free in their heads

That’s part of the appeal for me. Payton would send Moore packing and run the offense.
For me, it’s about him being involved in finding the next QB.

Who is doing that? MM? McClay? Another Jerry puppet? Could be decades before they find one. It happens around the league.

If Payton and Jerry weren’t friends, I’d 100% dismiss it as ever going to happen, but the timing will still need to add up, and if Payton wants to return now, it won’t.

I still maintain my theory of when Jerry does step down, he is going to want to have someone he trusts in place to help the kid.

Payton can coach the team and be assistant GM, as he was in NO. It works for that reason. Still not worth a first, nor do I think that’ll be the eventual price, especially if it’s a year from now.

He signed Dak. That accounts for 90% of this teams problems.

I’ve seen this one making the rounds:

If that’s true, I can’t help but to think it’s all about the Cowboys job for him.

If it’s not opening this year, he’ll go back to television until next year.

Of course, he will give it another go next season!
