Selvie looks like a good find.

Has spencer played? Nope. Practiced? Nope. Earn it back. Gs has the spot. Rotate in and earn $10 mil homey.

Your point would have merit if Spencer wasn't coming off a career season (which is better than anything Selvie has ever done, by a mile) or even if Selvie was coming off a monster game (he had a good game, nothing more, nothing less).

Spencer gives the team a better chance at winning, and when he's healthy, he gets the snaps.

What's more ridiculous is claiming Spencer is Dallas' best defender last season without acknowledging that Ware was battling multiple injuries throughout the year, Rat never got healthy, and both Lee and Carter were injured and out of the lineup early. That's pretty damning praise IMO.

Not really. Regardless of who else was on the field or injured...Spencer had a pro bowl season...well worth the franchise designation.

And long before last season Spencer has been an above average defender. Always incredibly stout against the run. Even his nickname "Almost Anthony" means that Spencer was by definition making QBs uncomfortable and applying pressure.

I'm not for resigning him because he will be going on 30...but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the years of strong service he has given the Cowboys.

Not sure if this was mentioned or not, but after re-watching the forced fumble by Church (thanks Kilyin), Selvie was the guy who recovered the fumble.

Dude was lined up at DE on the OPPOSITE side of the field where the run went, and beat 5 NYG players to the ball. Gotta love that hustle.

Spencer was our best defensive player last year and you guys want him to have to beat out Selvie? Talk about under appreciated......

Wrong. Selvie has earned. The job. They split time to stay fresh. Maybe trade spence mid season fir value to 3-4 team? 10 mil guys dont split time if they're legit. Not saying we don't need him but selvie is playing nicely for less $

Trade Spencer and hurt our defensive line depth even more? What sense does that make?

while I really enjoyed watching Selvie in the game, keep in mind it was one game...teams will now have tape on him and can see his moves...he did exhibit a lot of energy and THAT is terrific, but to supplant Spencer is just crazy talk....saying that we rotate him (when healthy) to drive his asking price down is ludicrous...we are paying him the franchise money, get him the **** on the field!!!

Now is not the time to trade $10 million dollar player who's contract is guaranteed we will still be paying for him since he was franchised. If we were going to trade him it should have been when we franchised him. Especially considering most teams figure we are not going to keep him at the end of the year we would be lucky to get a 3rd for him in season.

Selvie has earned the right to be a strong player in the rotation and to be in contention as Spencer's replacement next season. He has not, however, earned the right to start over a healthy Spencer.

Spencer's obviously a much better player than George Selvie. And that's a really good thing.

At least we're getting a glimpse of what next season could look like at DE. If we're able to retain Hatcher with some of the money we gave Spencer, get Crawford and Bass back, and invest a high pick in the right DL, we'll have somehow landed on our feet with a leg up in what looked like a massive DL retooling task. If Rayford pans out, even better. Our proscouting group really deserves a lot of credit for the work they did at this position group this offseason.

Never said Spencer was the back-up, just said we need all of the bodies for depth. How this plays out as to who starts, etc, I don't know. Have a feeling that Spencer starts as soon as he is ready to play though, for better or for worse.

Sure because we start the guys we pay more here.. or whoever have a bigger name. Not necessarily the ones who play better.

That's not entirely true. What backup is being sat on the bench because the guy in front of him gets paid more? That's one thing in the Garret era that hasn't been existent. He goes with the better player.

Spencer is one of our best defensive players, but I do like Selvie. He's a heck of a back-up.

Still, I wouldn't mind Garrett making Spencer earn his playing time back by performing in practice. I'd like the message it would send to the rest of the team. You get playing time based on performance, period. Not on what you did last year, or how much you are getting paid, or where you were or weren't drafted.

Best players play. And frankly, Garrett is just about closer than any other coach in the NFL to being that way. Benching Murray for a fumble (even if it was preseason), cutting Livings after he missed time with an injury.

I love the direction of this team.
