Selvie - starter or backup

I don't think starter or backup really matters. It's more about having a surplus of guys who can provide pass rush. We've always been top heavy when it comes to pass rushers. (Well, we've been top heavy when it comes to everything). We've always relied on our top 2-3 pass rushers to give us the majority of our pressure/sacks. In previous years, our top 2-3 guys were usually elite. Ware was consistently a 15+ sack guy. There are only a few of those guys in the entire league. Spencer wasn't an elite pass rusher but he was one of the best #2 pass rushers in the league. Last season, he had a very productive 10+ sack season. We had a few years with a lot of pressure up the middle from Ratliff. I believe he had a 9 sack season as an undersized NT, which is pretty incredible. Even this season we had 11 sacks from Hatcher, which is incredible considering he missed a few games and is a 4-3 DT. But we're always used to 30+ sacks from our top 3 pass rushers. If one or two of those guys has a down year, our whole defense suffers.

Look at this: The Seahawks had 44 sacks this year. We had 33. Look at their top three pass rushers:
8.5 Michael Bennett
5.5 Clinton McDonald
5 Bobby Wagner
That's only 19 sacks from their top three pass rushers. That means the rest of their guys got 25 sacks. That's pretty good.
Now look at our top three pass rushers:
11 Jason Hatcher
7 George Selvie
6 Demarcus Ware
That's 24 sacks from our top three guys (5 more than Seattle's top three). But the rest of our guys only got 9 sacks. That's horrible.

bobby wagner could of been a cowboys. We defiantly could of used brockers and wagner this year.

Selvie will be the starter in 2014. He does what a LDE should do. Plays the run, pursues and gets pressure when they need it.

I'd be looking for a vet FA to play DE or DL. And I'd draft at least one or the other preferably both.

I'd like him to be pushed for a starting position. I think he can play either side.

I think Dallas can get DL help in round 1-3 that could help dallas right from day 1.

RD 1 Troy MurphyDE
RD2 Kony EalyDE, Timmy JerniganDT, Jackson JeffcoatDE
RD3 Josh MauroDT, Michael Sam DE

I don't mind him as a starter on the weak side. I would rather upgrade the DT's first

Starter! In a nice rotation but definitely a starter. He's a hard working cat.

Imagine that. We could've had a rotation of Ware/Hatcher/Brockers/Wagner. And then we could let Ware and Hatcher go this offseason, and we'd still have a rotation of Wagner/Crawford/Brockers/Selvie next year. Maybe we could worry about different things in this upcoming draft. Instead, we're panicking to restore an entire defense.

We need to 1 DE and 2 DTs in the first 3 rounds. Then we can have a rotation of:
RDE-Ware/rookie
RDT- rookie/Bass
LDT- rookie/Hayden
LDE-Selvie/Crawford

I like Nix from Notre Dame. He's more of a 3-4 NT at 360 pounds, but he can be a bid body RDT in a 4-3. Lots of good 4-3 lines have a big body who eats up defenders and lets the other 3 guys get after the QB.

You might draft two of those or none. I don't know them but I trust your judgment. They aren't going to reach to fill needs because they have too many.

I agree a DT is a very high priority. I also believe a ballhawking safety is very high. It is safer to draft a safety high than a DL these days. They also need to reload at LB and I expect one or two picks and generally these go 2-5. Jokes aside, they need to look for corners. And they need to find some that can cover and still tackle without getting hurt. With the rules as they are you cannot expect corners to shut people down. The key is to cover reasonably well and be able to come up and cover the 7 and 8 holes in the run while being able to limit the passing offense by limiting YAC AMAP. They are going to lookout for a RB; I'd like a guy who can pick up tough yards and lead another RB while being a decent receiver. That's hard to find. Then you've got Romo, Callahan, Pollack, and Garrett standing on the table screaming for an OL.

They'll follow their board but won't hesitate to move up a little for a S, DL, or LB and possibly and OL.

Gimme DTs the first 2 rounds. Look what Carolina did. Their defense wasn't that good last year. They draft 2 stud DTs in the first 2 rounds and it opens up everything for the DEs and LBers they already had. We have some play makers in the front 7 in Lee and Selvie, and I still have faith that Carter and Ware can be serviceable. Imagine what 2 beast DTs would do for us. Gimme Louis Nix round 1, a 357 pound DT from Notre Dame. He's this year's Dontari Poe. And gimme Aaron Donald in round 2, a 284 pound DT from Pittsburgh. I bet Ware and Selvie look pretty good next year. And Crawford can come back and rotate out at DE and DT, not to mention Bass, and save up some money by hopefully getting Ware to take a pay cut and go get another cheap DE or two.

I dont think they should go draft on a safety. Theyre already really young in the secondary. They need a vet there. Ward would be a good fit.

Rotational Guy

what does that mean ?

rotating the position with a DT or RDE ? or rotating in when the starter needs a breather ?
the latter is a backup even if he is playing more snaps compared to the usual one.

What would people think of Ware taking a pay cut, the Cowboys signing Jared Allen, and spending a top pick on a DT in round 1 or 2? And possibly franchising Hatcher?

Ware, Allen, Selvie, Crawford at DE all rotating

Hatcher, 1st or 2nd rounder, Crawford, Hayden rotating at DT

Might as well bring back Charles Haley if age doesn't matter.

How about they just move on from paying non-QB players that are over 30?

He may end up a starter out of necessity but he's got backup ability, IMO.

He was still a nice find though. You need those types on your team.

I think he's a starter, particularly if we can put some additional talent with him on the line.
