Man, it's too early in the season for this. Let's revisit this a month from now.

For the last couple of years many us have contributed the average / below average line play as a direct result of Philbin's coaching and scheme. The line has went through a significant transition from what it use to be.

My question is

Considering the progress of Steele(undrafted), Smith, Biadiaz, and Farniok(7th round), does Philbin finally get to see some love on these boards? Regardless of what actually happens, has he done enough to earn another year from the zone?
Can’t argue with success. So far anyway.

Wow. That's a ton of benefit of the doubt for Philbin.

Philbin and McCarthy BOTH stated that Tyler was behind McGovern at LG going into last preseason game.

And all those OL that Philbin preferred over Tyler are not performing nearly as well even though they were all drafted earlier.

Tyler's success imo is owed to Tyler himself, his attitude, his work ethic, offseason programs before joining Cowboys and the NFL players who've chosen to mentor him.

Tyler is self motivated to be a great one, Philbin had zero to do with that hunger or his ultra aggressive physicality.

In any event, Tyler is still not nearly as dominant at pass blocking as he is at run blocking. This was also issue in college. So not a lot has changed other than the penalties.

And finally, Cowboys OL are playing better as a unit and individually after Cowboys went back to man-power blocking which was not Philbin's specialty or preference.

I'm neutral on Philbin.

They only things that I know for certain:

Pro: The OLine is playing well now with a rookie LT, a 4th, 7th & UDFA plus Zach Martin.

Con: The scheme didn't give them any advantages in 2020, 2021 the way Callahan's scheme did during his time with the Cowboys.

I was pretty irritated at Philbin last year and seems like he is a polarizing figure this year as well even with the improved play. CW was a huge miss. Will be fun to revisit this in a few months

It helps when your mentally weak qb doesn’t make the ol block 50 times a game.

And / or perhaps the other coaches that work with the Oline-offense provided some imput for improvement.

Maybe but McCarthy has such a deep understanding of the offense his footprint is all over the improvement, haha

Way to early for such a thread my friend. This o line has to prove yet that they can be a force for a whole season. And even more so during the post season. It's been two good games with a nice improvement. But we had 7 good games last year before it all went to sh"t.

As for now give credit where it's due. They have improved and I really like our two tackles. But I do think our tight ends and backs are doing a good job against the pass rush too. All in all they just looked better than expected.

Nope.

Philbin oversaw the most penalized OL the last 2 seasons. And counting.

Philbin refused to develop Connor Williams at center. CW is now the highest rated center in NFL his 1st year playing center. For the Fins.

Philbin has poor feel for how to use his players. The musical chairs at the end of last season was instrumental in #1 offense falling off a cliff.

Philbin didn't want to draft Tyler.

Philbin had McGovern ahead of Tyler at LG.

And the final nail in coffin is Cowboys OL are playing so much better after going to man-power and away from Philbin's preferred ZBS scheme.

I always love to ask this question. For years we cheered for the team that so many NFL experts said had the best, or one of the best OL’s in the NFL. What did having the best OL accomplish? Championships? Healthy QB’s? Hmmm, just wondering

Troll leader shows up...right on cue.
Meh, i don't post enough to be the leader, more of a lieutenant would be my estimate. Rough couple weeks, huh bub? All that talk about how terrible the line is just getting washed away with a qb that can read defenses and make quick decisions. 1 sack. 2 games.

Philbin finally lined up his starting 5 linemen by accident. Exactly as I had said he should have done since training camp. You and many others here are like Philbin. Reactive...instead of proactive. Musical chairs playing types because you don't have enough to imagine properly in your cabezas. So when by luck it falls into place due to injuries because of your previous failed experiments, now you want to pump your chests and brag like you knew what you were doing??? LMAO... You know jack. You simply lucked out. Yet, just watch, Philbin will tinker with what is currently perfect and screw this starting lineup once again. Just wait and see!!!

Just like a struggling OL doesn’t mean the OL coach stinks, an overachieving OL doesn’t mean the OL coach is doing a good job. Yes there is a correlation of course but it’s not necessarily cause and effect. Talent is the biggest part of it. Who is to say these young guys wouldn’t be better with a different OL coach (or I guess possibly worse) and we know with Steele the progress may not even be due to Philbin. How often do we hear these kids saying how much he helped them? Yet we hear them giving credit to other players. Martin doesn’t need him. Peters doesn’t need him. We are just seeing Tyler for the first time so it’s unclear where the raw talent/good coaching line is. The guys who need him are Biadasz, Farniok and McGovern and they haven’t been great - which could also be lack of talent of course. And then Steele who as previously stated sought out help elsewhere.

Philbin is one of those guys to me that is too rigid in “his way”. Reminds me of when Alexander came in here with that hand check thing he made everyone do and it failed miserably until the players rebelled and we went back to a little more of the old way and then Alexander was eventually gone and they gave Colombo the job. Columbo got a lot of credit but really he just let the players do their thing.

We Changed blocking schemes a little last week. Did Philbin all of a sudden decide that, or was it forced on him by the OC, the HC or the players? My money says it wasn’t Philbin’s decision. We also benefitted from more and better TE blocking which didn't likely have too much to do with Philbin from a decision perspective. This is more an indictment of Philbin than a feather in his cap.

Tyler giving all the credit to Philbin ... wait ... what???

Am I the only one that finds it odd that Tyler doesn't mention Tyron? I understand Peter's is "thisclose" to retirement and perfect mentor material, but is Tyron so busy with rehab he doesn't have time to give a few pointers?

Didn't Conner Williams also just get beat for the sack that may have ended Tua's night, month or year? One would think that hurts the rating a little bit...
