Serious question for Dak haters

Dak’s accuracy issues were well founded. Year 1 he destroyed people down the middle, but in year 2 defenses clogged the middle of the field and Dak couldn’t hit the outside throws to make teams pay for that strategy. There was talk of Dez, Beasley, and Witten “declining” all in the same year. That was tough sledding.

In year 3 defenses did the same thing, and the plan to counter it was to hit more go routes since Dak was okay at those. But it’s a low probability throw and we just didn’t hit enough of them to break defenses out of clogging the middle. We trade for Cooper, and unlike Dez, Dak builds instant chemistry with him. Two huge games by Cooper and it finally broke defenses out of clogging the middle of the field. Jarwin then made the stat line in a meaningful way for the first time. Things looked more like year 1, and it looked like Dak was anticipating better by year end (something he confirmed in off-season). I made posts about Dak believing we may have been seeing him turn the corner, but I still had concerns. Recall he had two INTs in the end zone because he was trying to lob the ball in so not to miss a wide open receiver.

The first 3 games of year 4 is what removed any doubts for me. He came in with a new throwing motion, and his accuracy issues were solved. Balls zipped to WRs and the placement was better. He was able to hit sideline throws when the WR would have to adjust to keep both feet in bounds — something we almost never saw previously because Dak couldn’t make those throws. That’s what sold me.

Last year turned out to be a mess. Had Dak remained healthy all year I think that could have changed his narrative for almost everyone, but he had a tough time the 2nd half of the year with his shoulder. I also think 35-40 million is just a number that seems crazy, which doesn’t help. But Derek Carr was the highest paid player in the league for a time.

So I’m guessing people need to see a full year of Dak looking rock solid without big swings in his level of play. If the defense doesn’t play better, it may not matter, but it could change the minds of people about Dak. We’ll see.

For me, if you are going to pay your QB 40mil a year, he needs to be a difference maker. To this point, Dak has not been that guy. He plays great at times and he plays like dog crap at times. Yesterday was the best I have seen him look and if he continues to play at that level, then I will say Pay the Man, but we have all seen him play great at times and if you are honest, he has been bad at times. Overall, a middle of the pack QB. If Dak can become the QB that doesn't need an all pro OL, and 2 or 3 World Class WR and a beast at running back to win, then you can say he is a difference maker. This isn't about being perfect, its about rising to the challenge. Yesterday he did and he was impressive. He can play at that level and keep rising to the occasions, then he will get paid. I hope he does, I don't want to go on a QB search but I don't want to pay a QB 40 million a year and hamstring the team unless I know he can throw the team on his back and win a game or two when we need it.

And Dak came within 1 yard of setting the all time Cowboy passing record. He was the only reason we won the games we did last year.

Dak had to grow and improve like any young qb, those that don’t understand rookies aren’t finished products look silly now. They were all warned.

It’s hard to argue he didn’t have accuracy issues because if it’s true then why come into season 4 with a whole new throwing motion? Not a minor adjustment, but a big change? Why was clogging the middling of the field so effective for so long?

Dak had A+ qualities and C qualities coming into the league. It’s why he lasted to the 4th round. What Dak has shown, unlike most players at any position, is that he can improve his weaknesses so that they are no longer fatal flaws.

I called Romo seasons before he actually got to start. That doesn’t mean I didn’t think he had flaws or that he improved season to season.

There are a lot of you. Question - Is there anything he can do to change your mind? Would a SB win do it? League MVP? NFC Championship? 40 TDs? Anything?

Is it the contract? Is it because he is not Mahomes or Wilson?

Dak haters and fans agree that Dak can be inconsistent with accuracy but I think he adds toughness, running ability and leadership.

Serious question so don’t be nasty. What, if anything, could he do to win you over?

Yes.. Go win something.. Stop having games that look like week 1. Be a playmaker.

The goal is to win a Superbowl and he has shown nothing that makes me think we can pay him all the money and still win one.

We are fortunate that he is still not signed long term and he has another chance to show us what he's got.

I know a lot of you will be prisoners of the moment and scream buh buh buh Atlanta. He was always going to light up Atlanta because their defense stinks and being down 20 against a defense that stinks means big numbers on the way.

Remember this time last season? 2-0 coming off 2 high flying offensive performances. Anointing oil falling from the skies and flowing through the streets. Then the rest of the season happened. After 1 more impressive showing by the offense they went 5-8 the rest of the way with some very average performances against better defenses.

So far this season the offense has had one good half of football out of four. That one half was one for the ages and Dak and the rest of the offense certainly deserve the credit but let's keep it real. Atlanta's defense is a bottom ten unit, luck played a significant role and Dak has one hell of a trio of WR's to work with.

What Dak has not shown me yet is a willingness or ability to hit the quick passes in the middle in a short field. Quick slant in the endzone from the five or hit the guy coming across the back of the endzone. The throws that require precision in timing and placement. IMO you need to be able to hit a decent percentage of those to be considered a top tier QB and to have success against the top teams you will face in the playoffs. The QB run, RB in the flat and the occasional lob to the corner of the endzone might get you through much of the regular season but against the big dogs you're going to have to use the whole field.

As an aside to the OP. I would bet that using "hater" right out of the gate (or anytime for that matter) invites unfriendly and defensive responses. I know that there is no hope for clowns like Cowboyroy but we can and should do better.

Thank you. These threads are tiring. I see more people thinking he can do no wrong than hating. I think most fans can see bad and good. I think Dak is a great leader, love his toughness and his ability to get yards on the run. But you’d be lying if you didn’t think he looked bad in the first half yesterday with that bad idea flip/fumble etc. Week 1 was ok. I think a majority of fans like him they are just not the crazy extremes you see on both sides here

No, there's really not many more than that. Most people are on the fence re Dak. And rightly so. He's been wildly inconsistent up to this point. He was terrible in the first game, great in the 2nd. My mind is still not made up, but I definitely have not seen a 40 mil player up to this point.

Most posters are not set in their opinions on Dak. What you see are the 10 lovers constantly fighting the 10 haters. Most posters stay out of the Dak arguments due to the extreme vitriol spewing.

Maybe it my teenagers but that term which shall be nameless is such a part of our lexicon. I actually think it’s funny. Like I am a Garrett h$&@r and proud of it. I don’t get all twisted if someone uses that word to describe me. Maybe it’s my confidence. Who knows. I think some people are such babies.

Dak's "accuracy" issues are not supported statistically. Next gen stats tracks things like expected completion percentage, etc., and Dak is consistently in the top ten.

People here see every incomplete pass Dak misses. That doesn't mean he's doing it more than guys we aren't watching, but for some it fits their narrative.

People who have strong opinions either way are not going to be swayed when it comes to Dak. I like him, just don't know if I like him for $35-40 million a year.

I get it, but let me keep it simple, you would miss him if he was gone because he really is that good! And this is much to the dismay of his detractors.

Up to this point in his career, he hasn't been that guy. Maybe it changes this year, he certainly played like it yesterday. But we have all seen him play great before only to fall back down to average the next week. So as it has been his entire career, it's a wait and see. And I have no doubt he is going to get paid. And if he proves that he is the playmaker we need him to be, then good. But no way would I pay him close to top tier money based on the first 4 years. Good, not great with flashes of greatness and flashes of trash, that is not the guy you pay that kind of money for. But like I said, he if becomes more consistent and proves to be the playmaker we need, then go for it, pay the man.

So you want to be right, okay. On the one hand you say he had things to work on, but when people say he has improved that is evidence that they were dead wrong to begin with. Got it.

If folks didn’t try to make the case he was as good as Brady, Brees, and Rodgers so early on I don’t think he would have gotten the same grief. I answered the question of the thread as to what sold me.

This is not a guy with a good a throwing motion. He is even closer than Carr.

Only its not as simple as "is Dak a top tier QB".

If you are paying attention just about any young QB in the top 10 gets top tier money when they sign. A few years down the line, they are no longer a top 5 paid QB. Do you understand that concept?

He has already proved to be a play maker and he more than deserves what he is asking for.

Its all common knowledge about the contract. Here are the facts:

-Dak was fine with 35 million but wanted a 4 years deal instead of 5 years
-Dak eventually conceded on the 5 year thing, but then he wanted them to agree not to franchise him at the end of 5 years.

Jerry balked on both of those or they rant out of time. At no point did Dak ask for he want 40 million. He even said specifically he doesn't think he should be the highest paid QB.
