Sewell vs Parsons

I thought those CBs were middle of the pack relative to the past decade of top 25 picks at the position.

I also liked the concept of Slater at OG until Tyron retired.

Kyle Pitts was a complete freak.
- His stats in the NFL don't wow at this point but that team is rebuilding.
I felt similar about the CB's. I thought they were a tier below truly elite prospects like Denzel Ward. Both Surtain and Horn look like they are going to be mainstays in top 5 NFL CB lists for a while however

Thought Slater was the ideal pick to make as he could of started at LG and kicked out to LT if Tyron got hurt or if he retired. Didn't see Parsons as a generational talent that he appears to be. Worried about his character, instincts and coverage abilities, I made a major miss here.
Same here

We seriously could not have gone wrong with either Slater or Surtain.

After Surtain, Micah was my guy, and I'm glad Surtain wasn't on the board. Sewell looked like a nice player, and I'm sure he would help on this line, but I like Tyler Smith so much more and have no doubt that the team knocked the last two picks out of the park.

Haven't watched any tape on Sewell since the draft, but from what I understand, the Lions OL is pretty strong this year. The team is coming off of a loss but did manage to harass Hurts and despite popular opinion, held the best offense in the league relatively in check. I think they'll be out for blood this week and Goff is going to have a really long day face down, on the turf.

Tyler Smith proved this year that he actually was worth the 1st round pick Jerry spent on him.

Parsons made the Giants #1 draft pick look pretty bad when they played. The thing about Parsons is OTs don't see someone like him every day. It is like a college player who plays in the NFL for the first time. It takes time adjusting to the speed. If Parsons is healthy I think he will give Sewell some problems rushing the passer. I am worried about Sewell on Micah in the run game. The Lions average 5.4 yards per carry on the ground. This worries me a lot because if the Lions have success running they can eat up the clock, wear down the defense and keep the game close. The Cowboys want to get out on top early and take away the running game.

I'm worried about this team, too. The Lions have a better team than most Cowboys fans give them credit for. I think we can win it, but I'm not going to overreact and cry if they don't. Should be a good game either way.

What was your opinion of Clark at LSU and do you think he can help the defense this season?
He was my favorite LB in the draft based on game footage. I was disappointed when they announced the neck/back issue but I guess it might have worked out for the best if the surgery resolved the issue.

I still hadn't gotten the bad taste of the Claybust pick out of my mouth so I didn't want the cb's. I wanted Pitts or Parsons.

I liked Tyler Smith more in the 2022 draft than I did Sewell in 2021...

Obviously Tyler was a much bigger risk due to small college and penalty issues, but physically Tyler is the biggest wow OL that I've seen since the GOAT.

Tyler from a standing still position (i.e. without momentum) put Vita Vea on the ground. Pure power.

Anybody that watched Parsons in the Cotton Bowl had to know that he was an awesome player. The surprise has been his pass rush ability. It didn't know he had legit NFL DE ability. I expected a great off-ball LB that would be better than most off-ball LBs as a pass rusher.

I did not want the Cowboys to draft any CBs with that pick.

The TE would have been tempting if available.

I had Sewell and Slater about even, with a lean towards Slater.

Yep. I liked Tyler Smith, as well. After you mentioned him, I could also see he'd likely be good. Very happy with that pick.

By the way, how is Linderbaum playing?

EDIT: Looks like he's also playing well.

I didn't think the Cowboys would draft Linderbaum.

I was concerned they might draft Penning instead of Tyler.

I would take Linderbaum over Penning; also wasn't a big fan of Penning. Looks like he's struggling a bit so far.

Crazy, Linderbaum is listed at 304, but has the speed and agility of a fullback. Can't say I'd have been disappointed with that pick if they hadn't taken Tyler. Very impressive.

I remember the countless discussions prior to last year's draft, how Sewell was a generational talent and should be the Cowboys #1 player on their board. Nobody said that about Parsons and many thought Slater was a guard only. Sewell has been solid, but the other two were legit pro bowl players in their rookie seasons. What does everyone think about the matchup this weekend?
I was a huge fan of taking Micah but never expected what we’ve got from him
Don’t think his biggest fans thought he would be the player he has become

Don't know, I was too busy saying Parsons was the Drafts best and most impactful player. Never looked at Sewell. Is he good?

Sewell was similar to Tyler Smith, but came from a bigger program and was more polished. He also needed a ton of work in his technique, but his strength was already NFL ready.

We agree 90% of the time but man can’t agree with this…Sewell was a full round ahead of Tyler as an OT prospect IMO. So much cleaner tape and a better athlete.

That being said, I think Sewell can be an all pro OT and Tyler can be an all pro G.

He’s done well stepping in as a LT but the negatives in the scouting report have been accurate as he’s top 5 in penalties and top 10ish in sacks allowed. Just don’t think he’s the athlete to stick outside.

Exact same thing with me. I did not want either corner. I was happy when they went off the board.

Think Tyler has played well considering he was practicing to play guard all camp long. Yes, he needs to play cleaner, but he has been excellent as a run blocker. He will only get better with more experience. Sewell is by far the higher rated prospect at the same juncture. Both are high ceiling prospects where Tyler has a steeper learning curve

In the months leading up to the draft, I said that as long as Dallas was ok with Parson’s maturity, that I wouldn’t be worried about that.

I said I’d be fine with Parsons as long as they used him some as a pass rushing chess piece, because he just has a knack for getting to the QB in a flash. I said I did not want Dallas to take him if all they wanted to do was just stick him at off-ball LB and let him make tackles. I knew he would be good at that but those guys don’t really impact the game enough to use a (at the time) top 10 pick on one.

Not knowing Quinn’s play calling much, I worried that they wouldn’t use Parsons the way I hoped they would… but man was I wrong about that. They have deployed him in exactly the manner that I wanted them to. Lucky for us.

Yep. During last year's offseason I discussed the Slater vs. Parsons impact on the team with you. You did say provided that if he was used properly as a mostly quarterback chaser, that his generational talent would be obvious in not only making the defense but the whole team better.

While I still might debate you on excellent to outstanding Left Tackles versus most dominant edge rushers...

I'm still taking the next LT(Parsons) over every left tackle.

Honestly, I wanted Pitts, Surtain or Sewell. I really didn't know that much about Parsons. But I knew after OL, we needed to address the linebacking corp. I didn't think Clear Eye and LVE were going to cut it as linebackers.

I thought Surtain was the most NFL ready and had the pedigree.

After we drafted Parsons, I was on board because of our need at that position. I never envisioned he would be the "War Daddy" Jerry often talked about acquiring.
It's like he fell into our laps.

My only concern about Parson was if he would succumb to the Cowboys cupcake culture. So far, so good. Seems like he's instituting a new culture.

I also remember Cowboys fans bemoaning that we didn't trade with the Bears to get their No. 1 for 2021 and 2022. It's good that we didn't.
I posted many threads about parsons pre draft. Posted even more about not drafting pitts. Can’t say there wasn’t dialogue out there.

Tyler has been a grand slam pick. To think we found our next great LT with that late a pick is incredible.
