Shemar James - tackling machine

Seemed like a lot of his tackles where down the field.
I think a number of his assignments were to cover a zone 5-6 yards off the line yesterday so it's not surprising a number of those tackles were after a pass and catch. He's only played 86 snaps and has been in on nearly 25% of those plays.

Shamar James can tackle and we aren't sure he can cover yet.

We already know Jack Sanborn can't tackle OR cover. So even if Sanborn is healthy he needs to backup James, not the other way around.
exactly soon as we play a team with a RB or whomever that can catch, we've seen the results of what will happen!! Hopefully he can do both for many many years to come

His draft grade was "average". He is clearly doing better than most thought!!!

Overview
James flashes speed but has never really developed the recognition and response talent to chalk up playmaking production. He has some twitch in his movement and does a nice job of working past blocks, but he might not be able to anticipate with enough consistency to play ahead of NFL blocking schemes. James is athletic in space and can play special teams, but he might never be more than an average backup.

Strengths
Scrapes quickly with rapid-fire slide steps.
Weaves around traffic in pursuit of the football.
Plays downhill and physically.
Uses hands and body-turn to fight around blocks.
Elusive and urgent as a blitzer.
Four-phase special teams experience.

Weaknesses
Tackle production does not stand out (165 in three seasons).
Below-average instincts and diagnosing quickness.
Inconsistent to see past blocks and key the play.
Shallow angles in pursuit leave him short.
Failure to wrap up ball-carrier leads to misses.

The scout missed on this report IMO

I also think James is only 21 years old. He's raw but it looks like his weaknesses can be coached out of him.

Hoping he and Overshown are the long term answers here.

Well seeing how we need a MLB....I'll take it
you'll take it until he's exposed! I'm not saying he can't i'm asking, I hope he can, would be great to have an LB that can tackle and cover

It was NOT lost on me how much our defense got better when Sanborn went out and James came in. Not saying that James is All-Pro or anything, but I watched Sanborn run PAST the hole that Hall was in so that he could take on a blocker on the other side of the hole. And there was NO ONE behind Sanborn to tackle Hall. Result? Big run for the Jets.

I’m willing to give it a go with James. I have already seen what Sanborn can do . Sanborn’s ceiling is the underside of the toilet seat.
I feel like Sanborn is the type of guy who coaches live with because he won't kill you with a massive mistake. Unfortunately watching him play is like death by 1000 razor blades. He'll still kill you, unless hes surrounded by stars.
