Shemar James - tackling machine

It was NOT lost on me how much our defense got better when Sanborn went out and James came in. Not saying that James is All-Pro or anything, but I watched Sanborn run PAST the hole that Hall was in so that he could take on a blocker on the other side of the hole. And there was NO ONE behind Sanborn to tackle Hall. Result? Big run for the Jets.
It wasn't like our run defense improved after Sanborn left the game, though. A lot of that was on the DTs and the LBs since the Jets were gouging us up the middle.

you'll take it until he's exposed! I'm not saying he can't i'm asking, I hope he can, would be great to have an LB that can tackle and cover
Listening to Broadus all day is fine, I do too, but I’ve learned not to let his negativity influence all my thoughts. Don’t say you don’t listen to him, it’s obvious. I like him too (half the time) and I listen and watch all those shows and podcasts. The issue is he’s a pessimist who is one of those guys who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else about everything else:

Every single one of your takes about James is what he’s been saying for the last 24 hours. And even if they are 100% correct (which there not), here’s what all y’all for some reason are forgetting. He’s a rookie drafted in the 5th round. As far as the NFL go’s, he’s as green and as inexperienced as there is. He’s not supposed to be good. Hell, it’s crazy he’s even playing. For being a 21 year old 5th round LB, if you and BB don’t think he’s playing out of his A**, you don’t know as much as you think you know. This is as bad as he’s ever going play. This is the floor. Right now, he’s the best they have. It sure as hell isn’t Sandborn. James is going to get better at everything he’s not supposed to know yet.

James has flaws but guys didn't run away from him with ease and he didn't miss many tackles. Remember this defense is designed to keep pass catchers in front of you, underneath, then rally to the tackle, and I thought Shemar was a sure tackler in that duty.

The Robert Jones disease.
Not Robert Jones, the guy we drafted in the 2nd round who had the bad knee injury his senior year. He had lots of tackles 7-10 yards down field. That doesn’t help the defense get off the field.

We need someone with Shaun Lee’s instincts! Those guys don’t come around very often though.

His draft grade was "average". He is clearly doing better than most thought!!!

Draft Projection Rounds 6-7

Overview
James flashes speed but has never really developed the recognition and response talent to chalk up playmaking production. He has some twitch in his movement and does a nice job of working past blocks, but he might not be able to anticipate with enough consistency to play ahead of NFL blocking schemes. James is athletic in space and can play special teams, but he might never be more than an average backup.

Strengths
Scrapes quickly with rapid-fire slide steps.
Weaves around traffic in pursuit of the football.
Plays downhill and physically.
Uses hands and body-turn to fight around blocks.
Elusive and urgent as a blitzer.
Four-phase special teams experience.

Weaknesses
Tackle production does not stand out (165 in three seasons).
Below-average instincts and diagnosing quickness.
Inconsistent to see past blocks and key the play.
Shallow angles in pursuit leave him short.
Failure to wrap up ball-carrier leads to misses.
I saw him run the 40. He stumbled with a bad jump. Then recovered and still ran a 4.59. For a big man like him thats huge. I think he is underrated. There was a reason why the Cowboys traded up to get him.

The Robert Jones disease.
Is that right? I liked Jones. Always thought he was good, but is that what they say?

He was a stud on my 95 NFL Gameday roster (it was briefly the best video game football ever)

I’m willing to give it a go with James. I have already seen what Sanborn can do . Sanborn’s ceiling is the underside of the toilet seat.
San was All Conf at Wisconsin.

A tackling machine.

James needs a lot of work.

He isn’t the next Micah.

Micah runs a 4.3

James a 4.7

Uhhh calm down I actually agree with you and realize all of that I don't know why you brought up BB as a reference I didn't watch his comments on him or anything. I to also realize he's a rookie, he was drafted late, he's going to have ups and downs. He looks good now that's fine but will it be consistent is all I'm saying

Ain't James kinda smallish? How's he going to take LB pounding game after game?

When healthy and fully acclimated to the league,

James
Marist
Agent 0

Pretty damn good.

You have to remember James just turned 21. He’s still young and very raw

3 year starter in the sec, captain and green dot player.

The light is starting to turn on. Tons of potential

Agent 0 is coming off of TWO devastating injuries. People are expecting way too much from him.

This team desperately needs an upgrade in talent at linebacker.

For a guy that couldn’t legally drink alcohol until May, James is playing pretty well. I see Broaddus was trying to poo poo his performance but the kid has more talent then any of our linebackers except Overshown.
