Shemar James - tackling machine

Listening to Broadus all day is fine, I do too, but I’ve learned not to let his negativity influence all my thoughts. Don’t say you don’t listen to him, it’s obvious. I like him too (half the time) and I listen and watch all those shows and podcasts. The issue is he’s a pessimist who is one of those guys who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else about everything else:

Every single one of your takes about James is what he’s been saying for the last 24 hours. And even if they are 100% correct (which there not), here’s what all y’all for some reason are forgetting. He’s a rookie drafted in the 5th round. As far as the NFL go’s, he’s as green and as inexperienced as there is. He’s not supposed to be good. Hell, it’s crazy he’s even playing. For being a 21 year old 5th round LB, if you and BB don’t think he’s playing out of his A**, you don’t know as much as you think you know. This is as bad as he’s ever going play. This is the floor. Right now, he’s the best they have. It sure as hell isn’t Sandborn. James is going to get better at everything he’s not supposed to know yet.
:hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

Uhhh calm down I actually agree with you and realize all of that I don't know why you brought up BB as a reference I didn't watch his comments on him or anything. I to also realize he's a rookie, he was drafted late, he's going to have ups and downs. He looks good now that's fine but will it be consistent is all I'm saying
Sorry man, I actually went back and forth with him and his “disciples” a couple times on a couple different platforms since the game. I brought him up because he had the same exact identical takes on James. And the takes are fine, he is making mistake, he is struggling at coverage, but we have to understand that he was a 5th round pick for a reason. He isn’t going to be perfect right now. As long as he gets better we should enjoy watching him grow into a good player.

sounds great

He can tackle ......but his problem is actually getting to the ball carrier. Lol

Hes toast and the Bears knew it
The Bears limited his snap count to 20-25%. If Dallas found a way to do that and limited him to only likely running downs, he could be a useful player. 2nd-3rd downs & medium/long yardage, forget about it...

Shamar James can tackle and we aren't sure he can cover yet.

We already know Jack Sanborn can't tackle OR cover. So even if Sanborn is healthy he needs to backup James, not the other way around.
James has Murray type instincts and that isn't good. Sanborn is the complete opposite has the instincts but no athletic ability. Having James in the nickel makes sense until he proves he can handle becoming an early down backer.

His tackling efficiency should be the minimum bar.

His draft grade was "average". He is clearly doing better than most thought!!!

By Lance Zierlein NFL Analyst
Draft Projection Rounds 6-7

Overview
James flashes speed but has never really developed the recognition and response talent to chalk up playmaking production. He has some twitch in his movement and does a nice job of working past blocks, but he might not be able to anticipate with enough consistency to play ahead of NFL blocking schemes. James is athletic in space and can play special teams, but he might never be more than an average backup.

Strengths
Scrapes quickly with rapid-fire slide steps.
Weaves around traffic in pursuit of the football.
Plays downhill and physically.
Uses hands and body-turn to fight around blocks.
Elusive and urgent as a blitzer.
Four-phase special teams experience.

Weaknesses
Tackle production does not stand out (165 in three seasons).
Below-average instincts and diagnosing quickness.
Inconsistent to see past blocks and key the play.
Shallow angles in pursuit leave him short.
Failure to wrap up ball-carrier leads to misses.
What's wild is Shemar James draft grade wasn't that far off from Overshown. Though Overshown is bigger and faster than Shemar. Shemar's draft grade was a 5.88 - Average backup or special-teamer.

Demarvion Overshown grade was a 5.96 - Average backup or special-teamer.
Overview
Former safety turned linebacker who has slowly but surely improved his feet and recognition over the last three seasons. Whether playing inside or outside, Overshown will need to get stronger and more effective at taking on blockers and tackling with security. His tape shows much improved key reading and play recognition, which could prove critical in allowing him to play at a consistently faster pace to the football. Overshown could struggle to hold up to downhill running attacks, but his instincts and blitz talent create a potential opportunity for him as a nickel/dime linebacker.

Strengths
Made huge strides at the position from 2021 to 2022.
Displays adequate patience to diagnose and process.
Hustles downhill to meeting point when he trusts his eyes.
Excellent awareness to routes when dropping into coverage.
Athletic blitzer when his number is called.

Weaknesses
Frame is sleek but a little slender.
Will need to bolster his play strength for NFL.
Must become more proactive attacking blocks.
Has trouble sitting down and leveraging his run fits.
Needs to get off the block more cleanly to tackle.
Allows too many broken tackles in space.

San was All Conf at Wisconsin.

A tackling machine.

James needs a lot of work.

He isn’t the next Micah.

Micah runs a 4.3

James a 4.7
I don’t really care what Sanborn did in college. He is pretty much sucking it up right now along with all the other LBers on the roster. Why not give James a shot because it can’t get much worse.

Also, I’m not sure why you brought Parsons up as a comparison to James in your debate. No one is comparing James to Parsons. This is about whether to go with Sanborn or James.

I want you to put the anointing oils away he's a rookie he's going to have ups and downs hopefully more ups
WTH would you think I'm anointing him!??! Idk when yoir use to a MLB missing tackles all.over the place and being out of place for the first 3 games and then a rookie comes in and at least is in place and making tackles you tend to appreciate the little things. So is that anointing??? I think not

Seemed like a lot of his tackles where down the field.
But they all were hard sticks. None of the jump on the guy's back as he runs past you that we saw from the likes of Jaylon Smith.

James is a rare athlete. He popped off the screen for me when watching the game.

Nice start but it's been a couple of games here. We anointed Jaylon Smith the next big thing after he and LVE had that one great season.

But Sanborn is hurt and sucks anyway. So give James more looks and let's see what we have here. Also, tell Liafau to cut back on the caffeine and play less spazy.

I think it’s a bit early to say James is the real deal.. it is the Jets after all.. But hopefully he can make big plays along the LOS at least and cover the flat.

I still got PTSD from Jaylin Smith the tackling machine… after 7 or 8 yard gains. And at least he’s seems to be better than Sanborn.

Good post. I haven't had time to listen to Broaddus.

Because they are in zone. He’s also a rookie learning and probably more concerned with the pass. He will learn and get better but he’s making plays and a lot more of them than Sandborn did
