I always park my car in the garage. That's one way to keep hoodlums from bothering it.

Have you considered putting up a surveillance camera? That might be a good way to get the evidence to show the police.

12 gauge is overkill for in home protection. Anything that goes through more than 2 walls is too much... You risk hitting family members.

Here in Mississippi , a law has been passed that allows you to act in whatever manner that is needed if you feel in danger on your property . If somebody issues a threat , you can shoot . We also have the Gunslinger law that allows a person to carry a handgun in public as long as you have a permit .

I doubt you would get the same outcome in Texas.

Probably not.
When my wife was single she lived alone in an apartment. There was a break in once when she was not home, but a girl a few doors down got raped.

The police told her to always shoot to kill an intruder. They said you MUST assume they mean harm to come in your home when you are there. And you if shoot them and they fall outside of the home to pull them back in. lol
Yes, she lived in Texas (still does).

They don't have to be in your house. I have had police I work around say that but I have talked to the Harris County DA who she told me you have a right to protect both yourself and property in the state of Texas and you don't need to drag them any wheres.
