Short blurb about Ken Bishop

Just a short blurb about one play. A SD RB got around the left end and Bishop chased him down. Granted the RB was held up a tad with traffic but that's a 300 lb DT running like that. I won't mention the horse collar tackle...did I say that out loud. He still caught him.

I fell asleep early last night and I'm half watching the game now. Did he show much doing his regular job?

The horse-collar tackle was my favorite play of the game. Bishop showed impressive athleticism on that play.

Overall, he looked like a rookie with potential. He is strong with good athleticism for a 1-tech DT. He needs more work on hand techniques and play recognition, but I would be irritated if he didn't make the team. He's already better than Hayden.

What little I saw, he looked very athletic. Most of these guys need a lot of work but you see the raw ingredients. Add some seasoning and throw in the oven.

Overall, the run blocking was atrocious. Can't say for sure if Bishop was responsible or not but if he was in there, he's suspect.
Both Garrett and Marinelli were roundly dissatisfied with that element of the defense. I don't think there's any doubt but what the film sessions to come this week will be uncomfortable, to say the least, for the d-linemen that were involved. Wouldn't wanna be them.

That was actually a good penalty. Guy could have taken it all the way.

An easy way to destroy the rushmen is to run the ball. If they don't honor their rush lanes then the gaps are overwhelming.

Bishop is as raw as all get out (he's still better than Hayden), but he's one of those guys you can tell will take to some good coaching. He needs work, but has a ton of potential.

Seems like that's what the team's approach will be. They expect the defense to be bad this year but hope to uncover some gems in the process, then plug in whatever holes remain next year. Sounds reasonable though I would have wanted another solid FA DL signed now and let whatever gems are uncovered become part of the rotation. That's complicated by the fact that Spencer and Lawrence are eating up two roster spots and neither will likely be much help this season.

Watching the game live, I thought he overall looked pretty bad. Rewatching later, I changed my opinion a bit. He looked raw and his recognition wasn't great at times. But he got some push at times and occupied blockers much better than Hayden did. He did a decent job overall of clogging the middle and giving the linebackers a chance to make some tackles (which they generally did miserably, but that's for another thread). Raw as he can be and inconsistent, but he didn't look overmatched. And his athleticism was definitely on display on that chase down/horse collar.

I had a higher grade on a lot of those guys Dallas drafted in the 7th rd and was shocked they were still undrafted going into the 7th rd.

Bishop
Dixon
Gardner
Mitchell

Those 4 guys specifically

You may get your wish with some cut downs of vets later on. I don't really follow our cap so I don't know what that means about signing anyone.

I'm not predicting that but there's likely to be an injury or so on the DL which we really can't afford. You've got Mincey (ok at best), Melton, McClain, and Selvie/Crawford to start. Bass (if healthy), Crawford some inside, Lawrence and Spencer in waiting then Bishop, Coleman, Wilson, Gardner, Rayford and Bush to compete for some other spots. I wouldn't be surprised to see a veteran DL brought in esp a WDE.

I don't like dirty plays. He could've broken the guy's legs. Not cool. Gotta be smarter than that.

I still don't like it. Swipe at his legs....better than threatening a guy's career.

I get your point. I've seen a lot of horse collar tackles and most before they were a penalty and I don't remember injuries. I'm sure I could have missed that watching games though. He did what he had to do although I understand your concern.

I agree that he looked athletic for a guy that size on that play. Having said that he was getting double teamed as the 1 and getting blown off the ball.

Yeah, he needs better technique and put on some mass if he's going to be a true NT. Here they play a penetrating 1 and 3. But we need someone who can play two gaps; preferably 2 of 'em. They do play some 2 gap in the base.
