The 4th pre-season is the most meaningless of them all. Nobody who's anybody is going to play anyway. I don't know what he could learn. Get ready for the Giants.

What good would reps against a bunch of bubble players do? He'll get better reps going against the Giants scout team. At this point, he's QB1 so they treat him as QB1.

after going through all the posts in this thread, and I'm gonna put my 2 cents....I think we should play Dak and most of our starters for 2 series maybe the 1st quarter, just to get all the communication and feel for our season opener.

Normally I would say yes, he needs all the reps he can get, but Houston is going to be resting all their ones and doing nothing exotic. In other words he isnt going to learn anything new while facing significant risk.

He'd learn more in the annual Miss. St. scrimmage game. I wouldn't play him if Romo was healthy. Showers needs all the reps he can get.

Dak needs the reps with the 1's. However, there ain't no way in hell that Dak steps on the field, without his 1st line, and with the understanding that, if he even thinks about running across the scrimmage line, he's done for the night.

I say let Dak play 1 quarter. I know everyone is worried about him getting injured. But lets face it. He needs reps with the starters. Plus not playing him is kind of a knee jerk reaction to Tony being injured. Thats just my opinion. So don'r rake me over onto hot coals.

you want to say yea, but I'm not sure how much he'd gain going up against a completely vanilla Texans D.

Yes, you let him play a series or two. This is a rookie we are talking about not a dang 12 year veteran. You give him a few series and don't allow him to go 2 damn weeks without playing a down of football before he makes his NFL debut.

The needs of the many...out weight the needs of the few...or the one.

Imagine if we play starters...and say Tyron Smith gets hurt. Then what? We have already seen what Green is. Last thing I wanna see is Tyron aggravate his injury....and I don't trust our O-line to keep anybody upright.

If Dak doesn't play we're going with Showers the whole game? I got no problem with that, but it just seems unlikely only one QB plays the entire game in preseason. When was the last time we did that...or for that matter any team has done that??

Showers is now the backup so he needs the reps.

Give him a quarter. He needs the reps before starting against the Giants. You can't baby these guys.

Normally no, but in this case, feed the hot hand.

He's on a roll, and we need all the momentum we can get going into Week 1.

Last thing I want is him coming out in a funk against the Giants after being on fire.

Besides, he just turned 23 and for a QB he's built like a dump truck. Don't do anything crazy and he'll be alright.

Feed the fire

The problem is not necessarily him getting hurt, its somebody else getting hurt.

What I mean is that if he is going to play, he has to play with the first team offense now. So that means Tyron Smith, Travis Fredrick, Zach Martin, Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, and others have to play with him. Playing with the backups accomplishes nothing, he has to be on the field with the guys he is going to line up with on opening day.

So you want to play these guys all playing significant time in a meaningless game just 1 week before the season opener? What if Fredrick gets his knee rolled up on and tears and ACL or Dez Bryant gets another concussion going across the middle and some no name safety for the Texans tries to make a big play to make the team?

I know its not ideal, but there is just no way you can play starters a significant amount in the last preseason game and you cannot throw Dak out there with the backups since he is your starter for 6-10 weeks now.
