Should Danny White get into the ROH?

No, not the COMPLETE blame, but a large part of it. Danny just wasn't good enough to get it done when the chips were down. He was a very good QB, but was NEVER clutch when it mattered most. He wasn't the consumate winner that elevated teammates to new heights. Good, yes. ROH? No.

Danny White was (and still is) one of my all-time favorite Cowboys' players. He took alot of blame for those 3 consecutive NFC Championship losses, but I always tell those who blame him, he played good enough in the 'Frisco game to get us to a Super Bowl. After watching the replay of the 1980 NFC Divisional game where he leads us to a great comeback against the Falcons, I was wondering if he should someday be inducted into the Cowboys ROH?

no, and it isnt even close

he was a good player for a few yrs, but a great or "Ring of Honor" type player, no way

Danny White is a great poster but I don't think we need to start putting CowboysZone members in the ROH. We'd have to start with MW, TB, Hos, etc. before we ever got to Danny White, IMO.

It would just be a mess. :)

Do you remember "The Catch?"

Well, there was just under a minute left. White throws to Drew Pearson who was tackled by the back of his uniform at the 50.

We needed twenty to twenty-five yards and we would kick the fieldgoal and win the game.

We would have beaten Cinncinati and won the Super Bowl that year.

Danny White, ignoring the pressure, held the ball low enough to have it slapped out of his hand, and the season was over.

He doesn't deserve to be in the ROH. Passing stats don't mean squat.

He had a team that was on the brink of greatness and merely needed a quarterback to step up for one minute of the season and move the team.

I will never forget that game because ESPN will never let it go. And people will go around telling you how great Joe Montana was. His legend started that afternoon. One of the two games I ever remember crying real tears after.

Nor will I forget Danny "No Danny, No!" White.

Danny White - 0-3 in the NFC Championship game. Losers walk the field, Danno. See ya.

Well said, old friend.

And like Paul Zimmerman once wrote in one of his books, Danny may have had some records and a sparkling completion percentage, but "when I close my eyes, I see Roger Staubach leading the team to a miraculous comeback and when I see Danny White, I see a 7-yard completion on third and 8."

And it should also be noted that Danny lost the locker room during his time as the starter. DMN did an informal survey and the majority of White's teammates actually preferred Gary Hogeboom as the starter.

Are you guys still angry at Danny ?

This is a guy who, right up until Troy Aikman, held most ( if not all ) Cowboys passing records. He led the team to three straight NFC Championship games, another what, 3 playoffs appearances ? after that, and he doesn't deserve to get into the Cowboys Ring of Honor ?

yeah, he held them because he came into the starting role at the same time the game started changing. The NFL was a run first league in the 70's and 80's...if you go back and look at the numbers, you'll see

White was a guy who posted some decent numbers for a few seasons...he had two really memorable postseason moments (78 and 80 vs Atlanta) but he was an above average player who otherwise performed poorly in the postseason...he is not one of the elite players in our franchise's history

I'd never vote for Hos. Yes he has spectacular statistics but he is surrounded by unbelievable talent. :lmao2:

Absolutely, he belongs in the ring. The tradgedy is, like with Drew Pearson, he won't be put in because Jerry has moved away from Landry's Cowboys. To all those that say he doesn't belong, then tell me why Don Meredith is in it? Don never won a title either.

See, the problem is, the 80's Cowboys were a team in decline. Whether we want to admit it or not, the game had passed Tom Landry by. The talent was there from 80 to 83, but after that it was gone.

I can go through each of the 3 championship games (and you can't blame Danny with the Washington game because he was knocked out of it before halftime) and show you that more than one person was to blame for those loses.

The Philly game after the 80 season - I don't think I had ever seen Tony Dorsett play such a horrible game. The Defense could not hold Wilbur Montegomery. He ran all over it. The truth is, the team had nothing left after the emotional win in Atlanta the week before.

The SF game after the 81 season - what I remember is Danny giving Dallas the lead with about 4 minutes left and Landry going into a prevent Defense, one he stubbornly would not come out of until SF drove 80 yards. I don't know if Everson is to blame for Clark's catch or not, but like Danny, he will always be considered responsible for it. I guess it was Danny's fault that the 49er d-back was able to get a finger hold on Drew's jersey and prevent the winning TD. Yeah, I know Danny fumbled one the last play, but like Romo in Seattle, is it fair to lay the blame for that loss only on Danny? If you do, then the losses in SB X and XIII are all Roger's fault. Any one that thinks this way doesn't have a clue about football or did not see these game their selves and are just parroting what others have said.

People blame Danny and cannot forgive him for not being Roger. Well, Romo is not Troy and I refuse to hold that against him. Why don't people look at what really went on instead of just jumping to conclusions.

Danny was a damn good QB, like Meredith was, and he deserves to be in the ROH.
But Landry's Boys are part of history and that is where Jerry plans to keep them.:starspin

ROH COWBOYS (IMO)

QB (4) - Meredith, Staubach, White, Aikman (Romo might be there one day)

RB (4) - Perkins, Dorsett, Walker, Smith

FB (2) - Newhouse, Moose

WR (4) - Hayes, Pearson, Hill, Irvin

TE (2) - Dupree, Novacek (Witten will be there one day)

OL (5) - Niland, Neely, Wright, Allen, Adams (Tuinei and Newton ruined their chances cause of the drug nonsense. I wonder if Stepnoski will get the call)

DL (6) - Lilly, Too Tall, Martin, White, Jeffcoat, Tolbert (I am too young to know if Pugh and Cole deserve it. I would love for Hennings, Haley, Maryland, and Lett to make but not sure if they ever will. I hope Ellis makes it)

LB (1) - Howley, Jordan (Ware should earn a place next to Howley)

CB (4) - Green, Renfro, Walls, Deion (if Newman plays the next 5 years the way he has thus far, he will definitely be ROH worthy)

S (3) - Waters, Harris, Woodson (Roy started his career like a ROH and HOF....but now he wouldnt be considered for either....if he can get his head out of his butt, and turn his act around, he could remake his career and once again be considered for both honors)

Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson

Danny White was/is one of my all-time favorites also. My first instinct is to say Hell Yes he deserves to go into the ROH. He led the team to 3 straight NFC Championships, and not all the losses were his fault. Lets not forget, in San Fransisco, he was driving them back downfield, almost in FG range when he got hit and fumbled. I cant remember the year, i think 1982, they opened the season at home vs the 'Skins on a Monday night. It was Thiesmans Birthday, and they were kicking our butts at halftime. Danny came out in the 2nd half and threw for almost (if not all) 300 yds and the 'Boys pulled it out. The crowd was singing Happy Birthday to Thiesman (mocking him) at the end of the game.
But, i have to agree. IF the ROH is reserved for the future HOF Players, then DW wont make it. A shame, because he had a pretty damn good career in Dallas. As a QB and a punter!

ROH has nothing to do with the HOF.....ROH should be an honor bestowed upon players who exhibited greatness while donning the star for a lengthy portion of their careers.

HOF is for players who were elite for their entire careers.....be it for one team or several teams.

The way I see it.....All HOFers should be in the ROH, but not all ROH players should be in the HOF.

BTW, I cannot believe what a complete and utter stooge I am. I failed to mention Bill Bates for the ROH. He definitely deserves to be there.
