Should I join the military?

You should seriously research into US foreign policy for the past for the past 50 years or so and see if it coincides with your values and morals. As much as they try to camouflage, the fact is that you have a good chance of being responsible for the death of another human being. That is not something to take lightly or to do for monetary gain.

It's the freaking Military! :lmao2:

You would have to be a complete imbecile if you thought by joining the Miliary there was a zero chance in hell of being put in a position of having to take up arms against someone.

As for values and morals. Those are changed by voting. The Military exists to protect the nation. If you don't like what the government is doing *with* the Military, take that up with them. To ward someone off from joining the Military because you don't like the government views is quite ignorant.

The country has to be protected. If everyone took that short sided view, there would be nobody in the Military and that would be a seriously grave situation for all of us.

There is also ROTC. Everybody has to think about it for a first time at some point. I'm sure he will get good advice.

Definitely don't drop college though, if worst comes to worst you can just rack up those loans.
If you're already in college, ROTC would definitely be my recommendation.

very well said

Its like the hippies in the 60's blaming the soldiers for the government sending them to Vietnam. Just as dumb.

You have to put up with a lot of Chicken **** in the military, especially the regular forces.

Reserves, National Guard would be a better choice.

Bottom line is can you control your temper? If you cannot then the military is one place you REALLY do not want to go to.

Do NOT turn this into a political discussion.

Apolitically, all I’m saying is if someone does not agree / approve of what a certain group is doing, it would be foolish to join said group and become implicate with their actions—regardless of who ultimately is in charge.

That said, if you agree with the doctrine, by all means explore your opportunities for employment.

My only advice was to research and find out what you believe before jumping into something for the wrong reasons. I think most can agree with the logic in that.

Read my comment. I am not blaming anyone for anything.

There's no question that the soaring price of college tuition is holding a lot of youngsters back from pursuing a higher education. I'm sitting on the fence as to whether or not I should take out loans and continue going to college or just drop out and start at an entry level job. My friends are encouraging me to join the military, but that is something that has never crossed my mind.

I'm just fishing for some insight from the veterans. Can you share your experiences? Good or bad.

Thanks!
It's 2012

You must get educated via either normal college or trade school.

The military route is a real mixed bag with upsides and downsides. It's not the 80s or 90s though.
In the world we live in now, you should fully expect to active duty if you join.
Take that into account with which service you choose.

That is a good point. It seems with all the conflicts we are involved in the reserves and National Guard get pulled up a lot. I was in during peace time, in right after Gulf war and out by 99.

If I could be 18 again and fresh out of highschool I would do it...

One regret I voiced recently as a matter of fact...

And reading comprehension is not just for students.

Let that go guys. Seriously, get back on topic.

Growing up in a military life, it's not for everyone. It can indeed be rewarding, but also push you to the brink of many other issues.

Good luck with your choice, and make the one that is right for you, not anyone else.
