Should JJ have traded for Jamie Collins?

Not sure, but what I do know is that we need help NOW. Our defense just needs some type of catalytic type player so we can move forward. This isn't the year to "F" around.

You can trade a comp pick but how do they know they are even getting a 3rd comp pick
They don't. That's why a condition of the trade was that if the Browns don't end up with a 3rd round comp pick to give to NE, then NE gets the Browns 4th round pick.
What I don't get is why the Browns traded for this guy at all when he's highly likely to enter FA at year's end. It's not like he's the missing piece to get them to the dance this year. Heck, they'll still end up with the #1 pick in the draft, in all likelihood.. They're giving up a comp 3rd or regular 4th round pick to rent the player for half a season who will have no meaningful impact on their team, as far as I can tell. Just makes no sense at all (unless they think they can sign him long term, which I think is highly doubtful).

I like collins a lot but we cannot afford him at the end of the year when he needs to be resigned

so the draft pick not worth the half year rental ( we have to many other issues now with injuries to MO and Church )

But i do like to dream about him in blue and silver BUT i am a realist it was never gonna happen

Browns have tons of picks and cap space good fit for the browns not so much for collins

As much as I'd like to add a good pass rush artist to the fold, spending a 3rd round pick for one year is a bit too rich for my blood. Perhaps the offseason and/or the draft will find us welcoming a veteran FA or a young DE with long range potential. We need a sack master, that's for sure.

BUT, if he leaves via FA due to a big contract then you get a compensatory 3rd or 4th round pick BACK. So you get a rental but it doesn't cost as much as you think.

There's got to be something that we don't know about Collins. Pat could keep him this year and just let him walk at end of the year and receive a compensatory pick which maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder. Why trade him away now in the mist of a SB run is puzzling.

Maybe they are willing to pay him quite a bit to stick around? Even if he doesn't want to stay long term, they can franchise him for a year or two.

They have 64 million in cap space in 2017.

I read on the pats site or maybe it was there forum can't remember but they said he has been doing what he wants on defense and they were not happy with his performance this year maybe that has something to do with it. Another member told me he turned down an 11 million dollar deal so pats aren't going to pay him. With the Browns 0-8 about to be 0-9 that pick the pats are gonna get is going to be good.

Actually, the Browns probably got a free look at the player. If he walks in free agency, they get a comp pick out of him (3rd rounder) which they give to the Patriots. Probably no net loss to the Browns, but the Patriots get a pick for sure out of it. They also gave up his salary cap.

This may have just been a message from Bellichek to his players ..... Don't **** with me.

You might be onto something with the franchise tag, and maybe they do have plans to sign him to a long term deal, but it takes two to tango. He may not want to play in Cleveland...can't say I'd blame him.

And you may very well be right about that. Very logical reasoning on your part.

New England absolutely loves the rookie LB, Elandon Roberts.
Let's see
0.5 mil/yr vs 15 mil/yr.
Plus you gain a 3rd rounder.
:hammer:

I assume they plan on signing him but this is the browns so who knows if or what they are thinking

I read the same thing about Collins turning down 11 million. Hard to figure. The Patriots have guts...some are saying he was their best defensive player.

I think there's a reason he was traded to the Browns. Belichick knows we could be a possible Super bowl opponent he wouldn't trade him to us I'm guessing. There's a method to his madness.
