Mike Shanahan sounds very much like a man who plans to coach again, but probably not in 2009.

Unless he finds "a perfect situation'' in 2009, Shanahan said in remarks to me reported this afternoon on NBC that he'll likely sit out a year, then return to the NFL in 2010.

"What I'm going to do is take a couple of weeks to sit back and relax a little, then consider what it is I'm going to do,'' said the 56-year-old Shanahan, the two-time Super Bowl winner fired by Denver owner Pat Bowlen on Tuesday. "Unless there's a perfect situation out there, I'd rather sit out the year and return next year.''

A check of the vacancies shows no good situations, never mind a perfect one. Detroit, the Jets, Cleveland and St. Louis all have significant flaws, from losing that just won't end to major cap problems to ownership looking hard to sell.

Kansas City might have an opening if neophyte owner Clark Hunt, in the market for a football architect, chooses a GM who will fire Herman Edwards, but the Chiefs are full of holes.

There could be one intriguing match for Shanahan in 2009. New England vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli interviewed for the Browns' general manager job Wednesday and will talk with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt in the coming days. Who knows if Pioli will get offered one of the jobs, and whether he'll take it. But Shanahan always ran his own ship, from bow to stern, in Denver, and Pioli could be the strong personnel presence Shanahan needs so he can concentrate on coaching and nothing else.

"I wouldn't go anywhere,'' Shanahan said, "unless it's the right scenario.''

As Shanahan said at his Wednesday news conference, he was surprised when Bowlen fired him. "But," he said, "sometimes I think it's a good thing to make a change like this. It re-energizes you. I don't feel sorry for me, at all. But I do feel for all the coaches who have kids in school, who have families to think about, who might have to sell houses in this housing market. That's really unfortunate. But it's part of the business."

All this says to me is that the current jobs available none of them appeal to Shanahan. If a job, lets say the Cowboys HC postion opens then he would be interested. Peter King again trying to make a fact most of us already can see bigger than it is.

"I'm just looking for a perfect scenario in Tex...I mean anywhere."

We need you, Mike. It's perfect here. I promise.

Serious? Speculation, sarcasm or Roy Williams like inside info?
Pure speculation. Maybe a little sarcasm. A lot of hope. No inside info.

Don't take my word for it at all. I don't know any more than anyone else.

I do know a little about human nature and it will take something somewhat traumatic for Jerry Jones to suddenly "change his mind". One thing that could include is losing his head coach in waiting to another team.

If that happens, all bets are off.

His public perception league-wide is important to him. He likes the relationships he's built and his standing in the league. Just heartlessly firing Wade Phillips after saying he's definitely staying would be viewed poorly. He needs some sort of "out".

I don't know, I think just about everyone is surprised that Wade is *NOT* getting fired. This may be looked at more as Jerry coming to his senses as anything heartless, especially if he can get Shanahan, who came available after Jerry's vote of confidence.

That said, I think at the end of the day Jerry is going to be content to stick to his plan IF he knows that Shanahan and Holmgren, or even Cowher will not be coaching this year but will probably be available next year. That let's him get one more evaluation year of Garret, and if he flops Jerry has a backup plan with one of these guys.

And it gives him one more chance to hog the glory without saying he had to bring a big time coach in to do it.

Shanahan would be a good fit with the talent that is here. WCO that favors TO, RW11, Witten and Romo with his quick release, though not accurate on slants. The question is who handles the defense I am sure wade isn't going to stay around to help the guy that replaced him again.

At first I didn't think it was possible because of Jerry's love affair with Jason but something Mort said was interesting to me.

He said Jerry has been getting "angrier by the day". I listened to Jerry's radio show with Norm and it was unlike anything I had ever heard from Jerry. He sounded shaken to the core and was struggling to find the proper way to deal with the situation. He even mentioned not making decisions in anger but then he said something about "anger not necessarily being a bad thing".

Interesting situation with Shanny suddenly becoming available and Jerry's state of mind.
