Peter King says this about Romo in his MMQB piece:

"5. I think the only quarterbacks, long-term, I'd take over Romo right now are Brady and Peyton Manning. Romo doesn't have the deep arm of Carson Palmer or Roethlisberger, but he has the improvisational ability equal to, or better than, anyone beyond the top two."

Hah. I said this months ago, but some were still hanging onto Palmer.

Romo can chuck it a long ways. He just rarely has to. He's already got the ball out by the time the receiver has gone 10 yards downfield, and the rest is YAC from a perfectly placed pass.

Realistically, in an NFL season, you will only need to take advantage of a gun like Palmer's 10 times. OTOH, how often does Romo's nimble feet and rush-evasion come into play in a SINGLE game?

1 or 2 times give or take about 10 or 11.

It's been a long time since I could say this, but there's no other QB in the NFL who I'd want over the one we have.

It was rhetorical, but thanks.:

I agree. Manning and Brady....meh. We've got the 27 year old Moxie kid.

Comparisons like these are hard to make because each QB is working with different talent, schedules and sometimes conferences.

I have never really understood why Palmer was always the default #3 QB overall. If you put Palmer on the Cowboys, the Cowboys are a good team but they are not neccesarily better, but if you put Romo on the Bengals, I personally think they would be a better team.

After watching the Sunday Night Game, I had to wonder what the Bengals offense would look like with Romo under center and Garrett calling the plays. Pretty hard to imagine an offense with Romo, Henry, Johnson, TJ and a healthy Rudy J..

The part of me that loves what he is doing is in agreement with you. The part of me that wonders how much better things might be is always at odds.

I haven't had this dilemma since the Aikman days when I felt Elway was clearly the best QB in the NFL, but I just liked Aikman more because he was already good enough.

And it's been just about as long since I agreed with you on anything... but I do.

I wouldn't want anyone in place of Romo, age being a consideration. He's just a great QB.

His improvisational ability is better than anyone's, including the top two.
It's odd to me that there's even a discussion about where Romo ranks relative to other NFL QBs. He's been ranked by most below Favre for most of the year, too.

I think this is one of those unwritten rules that a player has to either be insanely dominant in an otherwise weak field (Kurt Warner) or has to put in his time before the press will allow itself to recognize how good he really is. Romo's been playing better than anyone except Tom Brady this year, but we haven't heard much about it yet.

Or be a #1 overall draft pick. Carson built up about five years of positive press equity after his second year in the league. Peyton took a similar path. Brady and Romo have to earn their keep, big time, because some people are so caught up on pedigree and prototype's that they can't see the forest for the trees.

My opinion on it is this ....

Brady and Manning are great ..... but neither is gonna get any better at this point in their career.

Romo is already in their league and he still has growth potential.

I would take no one over Romo at this point.

Romo even more so then Brady will have to overcome his failure (blame the scouts & GMs) to be drafted. If he was a high draft pick and having this great season, you better believe he would be getting a lot more accolades from the so called experts. Romo's success highlights the failures of those supposedly in the know to identify young QBs who can play at a high level in the NFL.

BTW: There was been some talk on this website that Romo's play this year gives him a shot at the MVP -- although most of us fully realize that it will go to Brady. Frankly, even w/o Brady & Favre, I doubt Romo would win. There are still too many people, probalby including a lot of players, who still won't give him the credit he deserves. For example, Strahan continues to consider Romo just a lucky player. Strahan might want to rethink that real soon since Romo as a starting QB is now 3-0 against Strahan's mighty Giants.

Forgot that. Totally agree there's no way I'd take anybody over Romo. Brady and Manning are great but won't get any better and Romo is showing he's an elite QB in only his first starting season. Romo's got the age and the potential to be greater then either of them.

True, but you have to prove yourself and Romo has only played in 20+ Games and hasn't won anything of any value yet. I don't think it highlights anything, if anything, it may very well show, if you can play, with a little luck and patients, you will get your opportunity.

QB play is so horrible now, 3rd String QBs are even getting a shot to play. Some teams are still calling retired QBs like Bledsoe and Vinny.

There is no question if you take Favre and Brady out of the equation, that Romo would be the front runner. The NFL loves Romo even though you still have some doubters. Heck, before Manning won his Super Bowl, there was a huge contigent of fans and mediots that were doubtful of him.

Romo just got a huge contract, he went to the Pro Bowl last year, he is getting a plethora of endorsement deals, what other proof do you need that people respect him and expect great things from him?

There's no better QB for the Cowboys than Tony Romo, and it has to do with lots more than just numbers. He's the funnest player in the league to watch.

And the players in Dallas absolutely love the guy.

They trust him 100%. They know that if there is a way to win the game... Tony will find a way to do it.

That is an irreplaceable trait for your QB to have, IMO.

Also, he moved Romo up to #2 on his MVP watch:

2. Tony Romo, QB, Dallas. In the six Cowboys games since the loss to New England, Romo has six 100-plus rating games, has completed 73 percent of his throws and has 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.
I agree that there's not a QB I'd take over Romo, including Brady or Manning. Those guys are both 3 years older the Romo and I think Romo's career stats will be better than Brady's and just as good if not better than Manning's.

There's also this tidbit:

Book Corner

Greatest Team Ever: The Dallas Cowboys Dynasty of the 1990s, by Norm Hitzges, with photo by Ron St. Angelo (Thomas Nelson Books).

A coffee table book that's more than a coffee table book. It's actually got some interesting nuggets. Like this one: Late on the night when the sale of the team to Jerry Jones was complete in 1989, Jones went to Texas Stadium. "I had them turn on all the lights and walked out to the 50-yard line and laid down on my back in the middle of the blue star.'' The photos are insiderish, with a couple shots of Troy Aikman looking 17 and Jerry Jones looking 44. You'd think that Dallas fan in your life would already have every Cowboy thing he'd ever want, and you're probably right. But if that person insists on a nice tome, he'll be able to spend a couple of informative hours with this book.

I hear ya, it is amusing to me how Romo had to continually pass test after test before he was given his credit due, .. can he respond to this situation or that situation, can he come back after the bobbled snap, can he win the big game, on and on, .. and yet after one half, Aaron Rogers is the next Brett Favre.
