I can't help but to sit smugly. I suspect Jason, Jerry, Romo, and the 'Boys are doing much of the same.

It's like holding pocket-threes when the flop comes up 3-King-Ace. You know that no one at the table knows who the real threat is, so you sit there, underbet, and milk the situation. Ensue milking.

What this season holds in store is still very much a mystery, but it's tinged with justifiable optimism. Questions remain unanswered, and a flurry of activity must unfold before Sunday Night against the Giants. This thing ain't perfect. It's not pristine. It certainly has a veil of wait-and-see wrapped around it. But the vibe....the vibe is more than pretty good.

She's looks purdy, but what's she got under the hood?

Here's what we do know.

This thing tackles. Good gosh, when's the last time we saw this team tackle. Everybody's wrapping up, starters and backup backups alike. I've seen very few missed tackles. While Rob Ryan spent hours, days, and weeks teaching defensive trigonometry, these guys Kiffin and Marinelli teach fundamentals. The simplified system has allowed oodles of time to be spent on tackling, stripping the ball, hawking interceptions, and just general defensive dogpilery.

That's the most refreshing revelation thus far. This team will finally play some dadgum defense for a change. It will produce turnovers and three-and-outs. It will win its share of games.

This thing also has diversity and weaponry on offense. The backs are deep and different; Dunbar is going to add an all-new element. Zone blocking very much suits Murray, Randle, and Tanner. Dez looks impossible to stop, and Miles looks healthy and determined not to get replaced by Baylor's own. Notice how little they've thrown to Witten! That in itself speaks to a much more voluminous offense, most of which they haven't begun to reveal. Romo looks absolutely giddy. He knows.

This thing is HEALTHY. Sure, we've had the naggings of training camp, but it would be foolish to complain when we've only seen a single soldier lost for this campaign, and a backup at that. The Giants lost a starting safety this weekend on top of other lingering issues. If all we're missing opening week is Ratliff from the starting lineup, then we're in high Fieldturf.

And perhaps most importantly, this thing has a head coach. Garrett is hitting his stride. His staff is good, his roster is mostly rebuilt, the offseason of uncomfortability is over, and the Giants sit in his crosshairs. He drove it all home with a purposeful benching of Murray to seal the way things are gonna be.

Again, there's still a hail dent here and there. It's got a bit more spit-shine to apply. It still needs a guard, and I'm sure the personnel boys are also hoping for a certain defensive tackle or two gets slashed in a cap maneuver or positional logjam. The Cowboys will have to say bye to a few really nice players, too, for the same sort of reasons. A bit of good furtune here would go a long way.

But all-in-all, I think this thing looks mighty promising as we pull away from the dock. This is a very dangerous team for the likes of San Fran and Seattle to be mindful.

My official prediction, therefore, is 11-5, and an appearance in the NFC championship. Beyond that is the stuff of hopes and dreams.

But tell no one, please. I'm just going to sit quietly and smile for a while.

Any minute now the pessimists will tank this post. They only see a mediocre guard and defensive line backups and thus believe the sky is falling. We only have trip threes, they cry! Better fold

Good post, and all true. We are looking and playing like one of the teams that used to routinely beat us, and I like it. The Boys are back.

I do not think anyone questions the turn overs from the Tampa-2 scheme. I think people question the same thing has been done on Offense for how many years now, and all of a sudden people think we are going to win 10-11 games. If Jason is no longer going to call games, maybe things will change, but until I see that in real games, there is nothing to brag about. I really see this team as 8-8, maybe 9-7.

Speaking of ace up the sleeve I still don't think Dunbar is even hurt. I think they want him to sneak up on NY week 1. There was really no need in him playing anymore this preseason.

Same thing on offense?

The blocking scheme has entirely changed, we've never had a Sproles-style of back, the fullback is gone, a new big 3rd receiver, and Callahan likes to run the ball more and and is calling the plays.

How is that the same?

If literally ANYONE in this organization, including the 53rd player on the roster all the way up to Jerry is sitting around "smugly", i hope Sean Lee goes right up to them and punches them in the nose.

That's the last thing we should be doing right now.. is feeling any kind of satisfaction with where we are currently.

The attitude i want is that we are nothing right now. We've stunk for years.. and if we want respect, we need to go out and scratch and claw every second of every quarter to earn it back. That's the attitude i want to see from top to bottom in this organization.

Our defense is looking like a top 10 D, with a shot at being top 5 if everyone stays healthy. Even if it can't achieve one of those lofty levels, it has still clearly improved enough to get us to 10-6, even if the offense mirrors the past, but I don't think it will. The offense appears to be improved because the running game is looking better and Romo is getting enough time to throw. I think this is the year we turn the corner and get back into Super Bowl contention.

If the offense mirrors the past, we'll be the 6th best offense in the league again, overall.

I don't think that's too shabby.. but i agree, i expect us to be even better.

athletes play better when they are confident. call it smug. call it arrogant. whatever. if players think they are nothing, they will play like it.

I think that is a little skewed. When playing from behind, you are racking up yards throwing the ball. As for the D being top 10 or 5, it's preseason. I only part of the Tampa-2 I like, is the turnovers.

i wont, ill just let reality sink in. Sometimes its good, sometimes its bad. Im not going to be acting like a poker player with a team thats not fully confident in a few areas on the team that they know will give them headaches. ITs not like we have a magical player we arent using. In fact we ll be waiting for some cuts like some other teams instead of saying "without a doubt we know who the 53 are".

Sorry if thats negative, to me thats life. All teams have that are of problem or problems, some teams overc ome it, others have their SB on the first game of the season, I dont want that anymore.

I don't want the players to think they are nothing.. i want them to think this team is nothing. I want them to be confident, but realize that if you want respect, you need to go out and earn it. Just because you had a good preseason means nothing. If you sit around all satisfied, thinking you've accomplished something already.. you're going to be in for a rough season.

We need to go out there and not ever be satisfied with what we've accomplished.. not anytime this year, until we've gone all the way and won it all.

Jerry has been smug for years about this team.. Rob Ryan brought that "smugness" and "arrogance" to this defense supposedly.. how'd that all work out for us?

Hahahahaha. There's no need for Dunbar to play. He's already ready. But Romo, Ware, Dez, Lee, and Witten, y'all need reps

By "mirrors the past" I was alluding to our red zone problems in recent years, but this season I expect the defense to be good enough for us to go 10-6 even if there is no improvement. It does appear our red zone performance will be better, though.

Im not sure i agree with your definition of "smug".

Smug implies that you feel some sort of self satisfaction with where you are currently.

That's the last thing i want from our players or coaches right now, to go out there against the Giants, thinking they've proved anything at all.

The Tampa-2 takes a solid 2-3 years to fully implement. I watched Lovie implement it here in Chicago. Dallas might game a few good games at the beginning of the season, but once they are on tape, and teams see what they do not do well, like not having any good safeties, they will exploit it. I think the defense will be a learning curve this year.
