Roy, I'm not taking sides in anything. I thought I understood both initial posts and from my perspective of that agreed with you both. Mox nix.

Didn't think you were taking sides, job. Even if you did.. its only natural to agree with one side of an issue or the other. I understood what you were saying, just responding to your post while offering more thoughts on the thread as a whole.

Some one elses succuess or failure has nothing to do with the success or failure of another. Hutchinson and Henson may have played baseball and failed John Elway also played baseball and was a success. Every person is not the same you judge each man on his own merits not the merits of others. Wilcox started off on offense in college he was moved to defense where he had very good success and thus far has done well. He has a lot to learn but the guy is more than willing to learn and has an instict that you can't teach.

What I am saying is, there are more failures that success, the reason being the odds are stacked against you. Athletes peak around the age of 28, so if he is learning a new position at the age of 20ish, he has little room for failure. I am not saying he is/isn't going to fail, history shows us there are more fails of players switching positions that success stories. At best, Wilcox is a project, and I can not name too many projects that became successful.

A good coach adjust the system to fit the personnel. I think what Kiffin is brining to the defense will be successful having guys flying to the ball using the team speed we have on defense using very active LB which I think we will see a lot in our blitzs

I have no doubt, at some point, the defense is going to be good, I just think it is going to take another draft to be so. All Kiffin needs, is a Safety, and to be able to replace Spencer next year.

I don't see tha safety play as lacking right now. I think any weakness may be within the depth of the DL and alot of that has to do with Ratliff. If Ratliff can come back and produce the DL and the depth looks much better without him it becomes a bit suspect

They already did. His name is JJ Wilcox.

Remember all that nonsense about how our 3-4 talent didn't fit the scheme? Well, not only does it fit, it fits far better than the 3-4.

Here is a scouting report, maybe you can read the last line, and tell me if that sounds like a starting S in the NFL.

No link.

This guy is a tremendous athlete who's only played one year of safety after playing running back and receiver. I LOVE players like that. He was the star of practice many days in Oxnard. Guys who play different positions see things differently, like Drew Pearson, Darren Woodson, Brian Urlacher, and if you're old enough, Nolan Cromwell.

This is a future star for this team. Some think he'll start by midseason, but I think it'll be next fall. He'll play a lot though, and his play will rise dramatically as he gets comfortable.

Just watch.

And Allen played very well last year in Polamalu's absence. Just ask Steelers fans.

I can't help but to sit smugly. I suspect Jason, Jerry, Romo, and the 'Boys are doing much of the same.

It's like holding pocket-threes when the flop comes up 3-King-Ace. You know that no one at the table knows who the real threat is, so you sit there, underbet, and milk the situation. Ensue milking.

What this season holds in store is still very much a mystery, but it's tinged with justifiable optimism. Questions remain unanswered, and a flurry of activity must unfold before Sunday Night against the Giants. This thing ain't perfect. It's not pristine. It certainly has a veil of wait-and-see wrapped around it. But the vibe....the vibe is more than pretty good.

She's looks purdy, but what's she got under the hood?

Here's what we do know.

This thing tackles. Good gosh, when's the last time we saw this team tackle. Everybody's wrapping up, starters and backup backups alike. I've seen very few missed tackles. While Rob Ryan spent hours, days, and weeks teaching defensive trigonometry, these guys Kiffin and Marinelli teach fundamentals. The simplified system has allowed oodles of time to be spent on tackling, stripping the ball, hawking interceptions, and just general defensive dogpilery.

That's the most refreshing revelation thus far. This team will finally play some dadgum defense for a change. It will produce turnovers and three-and-outs. It will win its share of games.

This thing also has diversity and weaponry on offense. The backs are deep and different; Dunbar is going to add an all-new element. Zone blocking very much suits Murray, Randle, and Tanner. Dez looks impossible to stop, and Miles looks healthy and determined not to get replaced by Baylor's own. Notice how little they've thrown to Witten! That in itself speaks to a much more voluminous offense, most of which they haven't begun to reveal. Romo looks absolutely giddy. He knows.

This thing is HEALTHY. Sure, we've had the naggings of training camp, but it would be foolish to complain when we've only seen a single soldier lost for this campaign, and a backup at that. The Giants lost a starting safety this weekend on top of other lingering issues. If all we're missing opening week is Ratliff from the starting lineup, then we're in high Fieldturf.

And perhaps most importantly, this thing has a head coach. Garrett is hitting his stride. His staff is good, his roster is mostly rebuilt, the offseason of uncomfortability is over, and the Giants sit in his crosshairs. He drove it all home with a purposeful benching of Murray to seal the way things are gonna be.

Again, there's still a hail dent here and there. It's got a bit more spit-shine to apply. It still needs a guard, and I'm sure the personnel boys are also hoping for a certain defensive tackle or two gets slashed in a cap maneuver or positional logjam. The Cowboys will have to say bye to a few really nice players, too, for the same sort of reasons. A bit of good furtune here would go a long way.

But all-in-all, I think this thing looks mighty promising as we pull away from the dock. This is a very dangerous team for the likes of San Fran and Seattle to be mindful.

My official prediction, therefore, is 11-5, and an appearance in the NFC championship. Beyond that is the stuff of hopes and dreams.

But tell no one, please. I'm just going to sit quietly and smile for a while.

Erod great post. You're back on my allpro team! I see 11-5 and. NFC champ game too

We're fine at Safety as long as the starters stay healthy.

Wilcox should be good but he shouldn't start for a contender at this point.

Heath actually looks ready to play now.

With that said they're all going to give up big plays. It's impossible to expect a lot from players with the rules like they are.

I don't want the players to think they are nothing.. i want them to think this team is nothing. I want them to be confident, but realize that if you want respect, you need to go out and earn it. Just because you had a good preseason means nothing. If you sit around all satisfied, thinking you've accomplished something already.. you're going to be in for a rough season.

We need to go out there and not ever be satisfied with what we've accomplished.. not anytime this year, until we've gone all the way and won it all.

Jerry has been smug for years about this team.. Rob Ryan brought that "smugness" and "arrogance" to this defense supposedly.. how'd that all work out for us?

What about this team has made you think they have a self-entitled attitude and that they don't have to work for their respect? I've seen nothing but the opposite. I think actually that we may have approached a "critical mass" of RKGs. This team works. This team is chippy. This team likes to compete. And by God this team likes each other.

It was a special moment when you had the "1s" mob BW Webb after his interception...a pick he desperately needed for his own confidence.

And that's all Garrett. And that is something that the Jason critics have been choking on all offseason. During OTAs every other story was about the head coach...in a negative light...notice how the squeaking about JG has quieted as the offseason has progressed?

11-5 was my prediction as well. It's been a few years coming. And i'm going to enjoy every single week.

Well then what is your point? This team is acting and these players are embracing exactly what one could only hope for.

Could not be more excited.

I agree.

The d-line has been a concern of mine since before the draft. On paper, the starting four look good but, as they say in the movies, this is no country for old men. If Spencer, Ware, Ratliff, and Hatcher can generate pressure from their wheelchairs then I'll feel a little better.

This team, however, needs to invest in a blue-chip d-lineman in next year's draft!

Add a blue-chipper on the d-line in next year's draft and the D could be dominant!

The point was to counter the perspective of the OP.. if you read the OP, you should know what i was responding to.

You've made your point about a single word...."smug". Replace it with "wry smile", or "knowing nod", and give it another go.

So what was your thoughts on the OP as a whole?
