Are you serious? He just posted an article by the Mayo clinic that clearly stated flossing is superior to a water pick. What does posting an amazon ad put forth by the manufacturers prove? Of course, they are going to make claims. Their claims don't have to be substantiated. Did you know that? The FDA doesn't regulate water picks. I can create a device and sell it on Amazon claiming it's 99% more effective than flossing based on studies I performed. It means nothing.

I'm not a dentist but I am a physician. And I have patients bring in crap from GNC and show me the back of the label saying how this pill cures such and such because the back of the label said so. When I see this, I get really upset that the FDA chose not to regulate the herbal and diet supplement category of products since anyone can make junk and then make false claims and get away with it. There are so many products that don't work and are unsubstantiated but are allowed to be sold on shelves.

Floss away, I couldn't care less what you do. Our family has a dentist in it that I went to and he recommened the Waterpik, it works and it gets all the crap out from under the gumline WHERE A FLOSS CANNOT GET TOO!

Flossing also tears up gums and irritates them, where warm water squriting at a a great preassure (levels 1 - 5) do not tear gums.

So, floss away, doc! No sweat off my back...just trying to help with alternate and safer ways to keep your gums healthy.

You are aware that medical procedures evolve, right? Glad you are not my dentist...

Have a wonderful day, and flloss them teeth.

Here's my thing about this issue. I bought a waterpik a week ago and love it. I flossed everyday but since I bought the waterpik I don't floss everyday but maybe 2 or 3 times a week. Should I continue to floss at couple of days a week while using the waterpick or stop flossing and use the waterpik all the time?

You can do both if you want. My only contention is that once you have your teeth cleaned from all the plaque by a "dentist", not a "doctor", you have no need to floss, just use the Waterpik.

Now, if you are at work or somewhere else, then definetly floss after you eat if you want too, but there is really no need to use waxzed thread to irritate your gums because when you get home just Waterpic all that crap out of your gums.

After breakfast this morning eating bacon and eggs, I brushed my teeth, used ACT mouthwash, then Waterpik'ed my teeth and I saw little bity specks of pepper come out of my gums below the gumline. Flossing will not remove stuff like that.

mr jameswood is a 34 year old "doctor" that disagrees with me, but our dentist who is a family member has been a dentist for over 40 years and he recommends a good cleaning of the teeth, then use a Waterpik once or twice a day if you can. If not, then sure, use floss if you like because it will get rid of the BIG debris, but not the small crap that gets below the gumline and into the pockets of your teeth.

Just trying to help here.

There use to be a time when they had to cut you open for gall stones or kidney stones or something like that, when nowdays you can have them all broken up somehow with ultrasound or something like that without having to use surgery. I say that just because medical procedures do evolve as does everything else as time goes by.

But, whatever you chose to do, floss or Waterpik, just make sure that you take care of your teeth because plaque can actually transfer to your heart if it gets real bad!

No offense to anyone's "family" member dentist and all their recommendation's. And seeing as floss has been around a LOT longer than the Waterpick, which has virtually disappeared commercially since the early 80s.

I think I'll go with the "9 out of 10 Dentists agree" thing, and stick with what's worked for me, as opposed to what a product manufacture's website tries to convince me what works.
