It is WAY to early to be giving up on Carpenter. Based on what I saw at the end of last season, I think we have a diamond in the rough. I am looking forward to seeing how he performs this year.

How can a #1 pick be a diamond in the rough

In a similar vein to my last post it sounds like Davis has been beaten a couple times on pass-rush drills but it doesn't sound like he's been whipped on every attempt.

Plus these drills (if I'm not mistaken) really allow the defensive ends to go wide-- being a guard I don't think Davis will be facing that an awful lot. He'll be facing DT and NT who aren't that quick to begin with. I'm not too concerned.

Some fans believe that athletes are expected to perfectly execute every play. One little misstep and they must be struggling. What a conundrum if the real NFL would operate that way because no game could ever finish and no one would ever lose.

This is training camp folks. Sometimes players are even intentionally put at a disadvantage.

lol. I agree, but anyone that says the reports have been all bad for Carpenter hasn't been paying much attention. One of the reports, either Grizz's or Vela's, clearly mentioned that Carpenter has been far more visible of the the ILB's...before Burnett's injury. It's pretty clear to me that simply with the number of packages Wade is including Carp in, that he's expected to make a large contribution this year. I'd still like to see him beat out James, but reports have James improving his play as well. Anyway, I'm sure all of this is premature. Lots of time left before regular season.

Henry will be the biggest liability on defense this year. Hopefully someone beats him out because I think he sucks.

I hear ya Bro.

Lots of Henry fanz around here, though.

Keep the faith.

Davis has reportedly looked awful in pass protection.

Only in one-on-one drills it is hard for any O-Line man to pass block one on one b/c the D can go as wide as possible.

Interesting that the subject of this discussion was the poor play by Spears, Carpenter and Henry yet today seems to solidify that Spears has now played well for a few days and Carpenter is now starting to come on. I'd say doom and gloom for both was a bit premature. And just think, there are 2 more weeks left in TC and all those preseason games.

I couldn't wait to find this thread after browsing the Daily Zone...even edduncan's boy seemed to have a good practice today. Gotta love the chicken littles.

Just goes to show that getting any kind of panic up after the first 5 days is usually a waste of effort.

Here are some sack numbers that I would like to see... and I think they are pretty realistic:

Spears 4
Ferguson 1
Canty 3
Ratliff 3
Hatcher 4
Bowen 1
Ware 13
James 1
Akin 2
Ellis 4
Spencer 4
Roy 2
Newman 1
Henry 1
Hamlin 1
Burnett 1
Carpenter 1
Glymph 1

That's 48 sacks right there.

I think that's a good number. Heck, I'd take 70 but 48 would convert to some pretty good pressure on opposing QB's.

Nah, more like Spencer 9 :) I'm high on Spencer. Not so much on Spears...

What I am saying is that there have been many #1 picks that did not set the world on fire their first year. It amazes me how quickly people are willing to jump on and off the band wagon. If Carpenter has a great season, those in here that are down on him now will be cheering for him like they have supported him all along. "Which ever way the wind blows" is their motto.

Has Leonard Davis pass protection improved or what?

Depends on where you get your info. MacMahon still dogs him, while Vela basically refutes all of TM's *****ing and moaning. I know whom I personally would like to believe, but we won't know for sure for a few weeks.
