So How Does This Help The Defense?

While there is no doubt in my mind that Roy Williams (the new one :)) will help this offense-- some.

I just don't think this team's problem is with the offense. This offense will score points-- even if Roy Williams was not the #2 receiver.

But until the mindset/play on this defense improves, I'm not sure if the Roy Williams trade does much more for us than allow this team to beat the cream-puff it will face in the first round of the playoffs.

When this team traded for Charles Haley and drafted Kevin Smith, after the 1991 season, I was confident that the team "found" the missing parts it needed in order to get deep into the playoffs.

I'm not sure the right "missing parts" have been found.

What say you?

And I don't even want to bring up special teams. :(

I say we sign Ty Law to shore up our secondary, and PRAY that the coaching staff has a serious renewed commitment to being aggressive (and smart) on BOTH sides of the ball.

And - we might want to consider calling Joe Avezzano!

It doesn't help the defense. It was Jerry finally getting the player he's been trying to get since the draft.

I thought the Defense looked much better on Sunday. I know the cards got the ball moving there in the 2nd half but I liked the D from Sunday. 17 points to that offense? I'll take it. If the offense and special teams would have pulled their heads out, that game would have been a walk.

Thats how I think the move helps.

You know that's what I'm afraid happened.

It seems like Jerry, "The Bad GM" has made an appearance.

It does help the defense by keeping our underperforming unit off the field a bit longer while we keep drives alive. Right now, our best defense is keeping our offense on the field.

Just my 2 cents.

This can't be viewed as a move for this year.

We now have our long-term replacement for TO.

As for how it helps the defense, it might a little. It could open up the running game a little and allow us to control the clock more.

I don't see how teams can play 8 in the box when we have TO, Witten, and RW to contend with. Crayton's a nice complimentary player, but he wasn't scaring defenses.

The best defense is a good offense :D

The current cost estimates for the new stadium, which opens next year, are $1.3 billion. The city of Arlington is on the hook for $325 million of that. Jerry is putting up a billion dollars from his own pocket. The economy is in rough shape, and the Cowboys are trying to sell very expensive PSL's and season tickets for a huge new stadium to pay for it.

As someone else said... defense wins championships, but offense sells tickets.

That said, I don't have a problem with the trade at all. I think it's good for the team. The defense needs help, but is it personnel or is it coaching? I think we have the personnel on the defense to dominate, we just aren't getting dominant play from them. It's time for the coaches as well as the players to step up.

whether it was a player that Jerry wanted or not. IDK if you were one of the people that wanted a WR in this draft however I was. Since we didn't get one this makes up for it gives up an above average #2 and also gives us a proven #1 WR. I don't see any downside in this trade at all.

It will help us sustain drives and keep the defense off the field. I don't know if we score more points, but hopefully we can string together a few more 7 to 8 minute drives and avoid three incomplete passes and out, which has been happening with increasing regularity lately.

a few thoughts:

1. Do we keep all the other #2 receivers?
2. The defense did play well against a very good offense on the road.
3. What will williams bring; if we score one more TD a game we are 6-0.
4. Don't expect Williams to be a star right away, but the Rams have now changed the way they are preparing for this weeks game.
5. We are probably saving some blitz packages and hidden coverages for the "big games" down the road. Are the coaches going to now see every game as big and release the hounds?

It could help the defense in a roundabout way. That is if we methodically move down the field.... but I know we have some quick strike ability in us. I think we will have shorter scoring drives. IF we could sustain good drives we can keep our D off the field.

I wanted a wr as long as we didn't reach for one however in hindsight I'm happy with the way it turned out. Jenkins is a big upgrade over Reeves.

You can't say this was a bad move just because it wasn't for a defensive player. There wasn't a top tier defensive player available. Jerry went out and got the best player available at the time.

If anything, it was a good move because our defense has gradually been getting better, while our offensive production has been sliding.

Again, it's not like we had a choice between defense and offense and decided to go with this.

It doesn't help the defense at all, of course. And that's a #1 (and #3) we can't use on defense next year, either.

I said it in another thread, but for all the people always complaining about how many first rounders are on defense -- which is a red herring anyway -- look at how many proven great players are on offense. This offense now has WAY more proven players than the defense has. It *should* be better than the defense.

Garrett has an embarrassment of riches on his side of the ball. No pressure, RJ.

If we've lost 2 out of 3 games and we're saving stuff for later then Wade needs to be fired right now.

As others have said, it helps the defense (and the whole team) because it should keep the defense off the field a little more.

Dallas Offensive 3-and-out's
first three games: 5
last three games: 11

While the defense is still the weaker of the two units, it's the offense's consistency that has been in decline.
