So, Not Only Rat, But Spencer Possibly Out Too

They said Spencer was a two week injury six weeks ago.

So, is this Spence dodging training camp, or is he more injured than he said?

I think Jerry should have done something about Rat after his episode last year.

Now we are relying on people who don't practice to make a team with a new scheme better if and when they play.

I'll reserve judgment until the first game to see who shows up and who is in civilian clothes, but for sure I am not pleased about this turn of events.

So, just wondering what YOU would have done since you are all knowing. Gone out and thrown money at someone's backup that get's cut? Tried to coax some retired guy back onto the field? Fact is, if you lose a guy at the start of camp, your options really are fairly limited. You expect guys on your team to step up and you try searching through what is available. We have added Selvie, Gibson, given Wilbur more time. But what would "Mr. Throw in all the chips" do?

I figured neither of them would be back for the first couple games

Eli was 8-for-20 last night for 82 yards against the Jets. This defense won't give up the number of 80-yard TDs that the 2007 team did. Giants don't have many weapons outside of Nicks and Cruz. Let them get their yards between the 20s and then lock them down. Plus they have OL problems.

The Giants are absolutely loaded with weapons. Very deep at WR (Cruz, Nicks, Randal, etc, etc), a very explosive RB in Wilson, another decent RB in Brown, the best TE they've had in long time in Meyers. Extremely explosive.
But they have their own Oline issues.
Smack Eli around some and it could get fun.

When will people learn that when the team says 2-4 weeks, that means at least 4 weeks and probably more. It's been that way for 8-10 years now.
Boy I'm glad someone else said it, this has been the case lately. A player gets injured and it's reported that "it's minor" or a "tweak" as to put fans mind at ease for the moment. Then, low and behold, 8 weeks later and the player is still not practicing. I'm just waiting on the announcement that Leary won't be available for the Giants game.

Just hit the archives and read all his lollipop posts regarding the OL last year, that will sink any thoughts of his validation for good,,,.

Honestly, EGG, a lot of people on this site could learn a lot about football from Bluestang's 'lollipops.' His opinions are informed, and valid, as far as I'm concerned. You might not agree with his positions, but it's not cool to pretend they're not valid without at least addressing them head on.

I guarantee if Spencer had gotten a long-term deal from the Cowboys, he'd be on the practice field right now.

Probably wouldn't have missed one practice...

I have no concern with Spencer not knowing plays. The 4-3 is much easier for rushing ends. If Spencer isnt available Im sure kiffin will adjust with more lb blitzs. Frankly we should have addressed the dline in the draft, we had plenty of opportunities to grab a falling player.

If you've seen his recent interview on DC.com, it's pretty obvious he's frustrated with his time out of practice. I'd wager that his contract status has zero to do with the time off the field. Especially given that it's a contract year for him, so dogging it now would be about as dumb a thing as he could possibly do.

What is he going to say? Of course he's going to tout the company line and whatever his agent is telling him.

Exactly, he's in a contract year, and if he tears his ACL in training camp, he'll never get his big contract. Why risk injury in training camp when teams will solely be looking at his production in 2013?

That means nothing. He is an excellent quarterback with an excellent staff.

They will find a weakness and target it and force us to adjust like they always do. They have what looks to be a very good back in Wilson.

Manning will throw it all over against us like he a,ways does. We are going to have to limit touchdowns to field goals and not give up the big play which they are excellent at. Which by the way is a function of having a good qb with a very good staff.

Without Ratliff and spencer we will have limited pressure and later in the game I don't trust guys like selvie/Hayden deep into the game.

We will have to out score them.

Bingo! You have it. This is also what I see. Pressure is what makes Eli nerves in the pocket and the front four defensive lineman need to be better than average. I see this as a weakness at this time.

O-line was a surprise to Cincinnati as they had not seen this from us before. With film now available other teams will make the Offense look average again. However, I saw Romo step up into the pocket for the first time that I can remember and Romo was very good at finding his receiver and being accurate. Maybe he can do more of this during the season and keep the scrambles to a minimum. Just hoping.

Ah, I'd forgotten about the old 'what's he supposed to say' argument.

You might have a point with the milking-an-injury-in-a-contract-year, I admit, I hadn't thought of that angle. Personally, I'd consider that a negative in a potential signing. But the interview on DC.com makes it pretty clear that he's following doctors' orders in this case.

They were addressed head on at that time and now they're being revisited, what's not cool is trying to suppress that they were ever uttered. I know he shares your sentiments in such subjects so I understand your desire to step in.

Don't worry, I don't throw out everything someone has to say because we don't agree in some areas.

Maybe. I don't recall anybody taking on his positions very effectively, but you're right, I agreed with him completely, so perhaps my memory isn't the best. Still, tackle the guy's arguments if you care to, and if you can do so convincingly. Trying to discredit him wholesale with lollipop cracks is cheap and easy.

I know you're willing to engage, and that you can back up your positions, though. Just talking about this specific case. I do like that posters like Bluestang come here who know what they're talking about (agree with him or not, the guy knows a lot about football, which makes him an asset to the board, just like every knowledgable poster). It keeps the place interesting.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I think Spencer is hurt, and when he gets better he'll come back and give us everything he's got, as usual. No compelling reason to believe otherwise.

I'm glad you enjoy his posts and would never seek to deny you that pleasure even if we don't agree on how much weIght to give them(at least with regard to certain topics).

I guess I'm he minority, but after seeing their 1s the other night compared to our 1s- I'm not anywhere as concerned as I probably should be. Yeah they have weapons, but so do we. The big difference is we've shown in our "dress rehearsal" the power of this offense. we've all seen the "dream" in motion. The gunts on the other hand, did not accomplish this last night. Even on Defense this unit has done all it has been asked, while their D, which does have a solid pass rush, has not shown me much to be concerned about. That clownshow of an offense Rex rolled out last night doesn't really prove to me otherwise, even though you could say they they're D had a big night..maybe after years of exposure Spags sunshine pumping has finally gotten to me..
