Been a huge fan of the Dallas cowboys and football in general for over 35 years now. Gotta admit........I LOVE this sport. I try to be a little forward thinking when it comes to the NFL and the evolution of the game.
It has been my opinion for quite some time now that the NFL has REALLY hamstrung the defensive backs in this league. This was done to promote more passing, which promotes more scoring, which makes the game more exciting, which comes down to the whole crux of the matter......MORE MONEY for the NFL. Thing is, its become so hard on defensive backs that they are almost at the mercy of w.r,s out there. Play too physical and its a penalty, play too loose and its an easy completion. Damned either way. I believe the answer to this to be passrush, cut it off at the source. And if at all possible,.......quick , INSIDE passrush.
O.K,...........Heres the plan.........Back when the Giants played the Bills in the Superbowl Giants D coordinater Bill Belicheat devised a pretty brilliant scheme against the Bills. He played 2-5 DEFENSE. Thats right......TWO defensive lineman. The darned thing worked to perfection. Sooooooooo....Heres my version of the 2-5.
First off I can envision lining up two defensive tackles. Tank Johnson and Ratliff. I would play each of them off the OUTSIDE shoulder of the center. THIS IS CRITICAL. What im trying to do here is get 2 defensive lineman to tie up THREE blockers which REALLY frees up our other passrushers. Oh, and as an added bonus, if one of the guards peels off to help an offensive tackle, in theory that should clear the way for one of our D.T's to have a much easier path to the Q.B. REMEMBER.........INSIDE PRESSURE.
Other thing this does is put more ATHLETES on the field at the same time. Athletes that match up better with the skill position players of the offense on passing downs. Nastyazz linebackers that can run, hit, cover, and RUSH the passer. ANY time you can get more ATHLETES on the field, together, it is a GOOD THING. On our specific team we would line up something like this.................Ratliff, Johnson, on the d line. Brady James lining up as a traditional M.L.B , flanked to his left by Spencer and Ellis on the outside. To his right by Burnett and Ware on the outside. Im thinking this defense could cause all kinds of confusion for an offense because they would never know where the rush was coming from. I can envision guys jumping in and out all over the place, up to the line O S, back out, just general mass confusion which in the end leads to HEAT on the QB. These 5 backers could also flood that middle making passing lanes pretty scarce.
Lastly, and more importantly, in NO WAY am I advocating this as any type of BASE DEFENSE. Im looking at this as a passing down defense, third and long, that type of thing. Soooooooooooooo, is this crazy?? Or can this work in todays NFL?? But remember, a version of it ALREADY did once in the not too distant past on the biggest stage in the NFL.
