So what do they do now about a backup QB

We’re certainly not going to take a QB with our first pick. That would be insane even if we traded down. We just paid Dak so a QB in round one would make no sense especially with the glaring holes we have. We pretty much have to hit a homerun with our first pick. The draft is a real crapshoot but we have to nail the pick. We haven’t added a single difference maker in free agency so we’re banking heavily on the draft.
The only possible “difference maker” players in this draft are Carter and Campbell.

Every draft has players that will develop into difference makers. You’re way off the mark if you believe there’s only two difference makers in this draft. It doesn’t take a HOF player to be a difference maker.

Sanders is falling like a Rock. He's my candidate to skid out of Rd 1 completely. Then at 44 Dallas drafts him.
Sanders will never skid far enough for us to take him in the 2nd round.
Why on Earth do we need to waste money on a vet? This team is not built (nor is it poising to build) to win now. The upcoming season is already lost.

Draft the next QB now.

Does anyone here recall 1989? A decision was made. Not to try to prop-up a struggling franchise to attain a respectable record. But to rebuild the team around a good QB & a few existing nuggets (incl. Michael Irvin). The rookie Aikman was absolutely thrown to the dogs, destroyed in his first season, going 1-15. But he, and things, got better from there. Drafted Emmitt Smith the next year, and it was off to the races.

Kyle McCord is going to be on the board at least through the first two rounds. Maybe longer. I'd draft him in a heartbeat.
That was back when the NFL had no salary cap and we got lucky and found a team who like the "scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz" needed a brain.

I meant immediately, as in 1st game of the season. Lots of guys drafted will be effective as rookies dependent on the the team they end up with and dependent on their teammates. And in time. Carter and Campbell will be effective day one regardless where they end up. Campbell may well be there at 12.

I can assure you they’ll be more than 2 players from this draft that will be “effective” day one of the regular season. If Campbell is still on the board at 12 then he’s not the can’t miss player you think he is.

Maybe they can re-sign Trey Lance to a team-friendly deal - maybe not. Either way… Better spend A PICK in the upcoming draft. Better.
I’d guess Lance and his agent want at least 5M for 2025.

Grier is on a 1M deal.

It’s a mess.

Yup. Exactly this.
If this was a draft with 5 R1 graded QBs you could take one at 12 but when the best QB is rated the 15th best player(Dane Brugler's board) in the class and the next QB is barely top 30... you simply can't draft one at 12.

If Dallas drafts any RB R1 they start day 1. Any WR at 12? Starts day 1. Any TE? Starts day 1. Any DT? Starts day 1. Any LB? Starts day 1. Any CB? Starts day 1. Safety? Yup.

So literally any position except edge and QB would start day 1.
Even if they suck in camp, they start just based on potential the team sees for them.

That not really how that works at all.
Carter and Campbell are likely to be GREAT but there are a lot of guys ready to go day 1 and the systems they enter will inform how easy it is to go day 1.
Carter and Campbell are going to be drafted where they end up because they have the potential to be All-Pro and teams will eventually build schemes around them.

Campbell and Carter are likely to go to teams with bad players around them. As such a lot of top 5 picks struggle early on.

Even if there were 5 first round QBs it wouldn’t make sense for the Cowboys to draft one with Dak entering the first year of his contract. We can’t afford having the 12th overall pick carrying a clipboard until we’re ready to move on from Dak. The Cowboys are a struggling team with a lot of holes and their top pick has to start day one.

Back-up is looking like a rookie draft pick at this point. Which is fine. We haven't had a developmental back-up QB since Romo.
