I figure this board needs a good discussion considering the wacked out posts we are getting lately.

I think Shanle and Coleman are obvious but do you guys have any other theories?

Might be Coakley for a third...:D

Seriously, I just can't see Parcells doing a trade right now. Probably wrong, just my thoughts.

I agree - he is setting seeds, but he won't trade during TC. It'll be the first few weeks of the season.

When are the cut down dates because Shanle and Coleman will be traded before then

Aug 29 is the cut to 75

Sept 2 is the cut to 53

Traded or cut for sure, we just don't have the room to keep them.

well then we can figure on both of them being gone by Sept 2

We have a winner.

This is exactly who is on the trading block.

See, I think the only way we trade anyone is if we find a way to put them on the 53, or at least the cut before. If a team knows we are cutting them, why are they trading them? I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that they stay on the final cuts, just to be traded.

Whoever you trade them for (unless it is a draft pick) has to be good enough to make the cuts as well, no?

The reason that someone else would trade is if they also have a numbers game at another position, where they will end up cutting a decent player. This way, both teams can shore up a weak spot, while losing nothing that they wouldn't have lost anyway.

Exactly. The only way to know for sure you are getting what you want.

:hammer:

There are a couple of reasons to make the deal before the cuts. One is so that you can get the new guy on your team and get him in a little TC / Preseason action to learn your system before the season starts.

Also, if another team is looking to deal for a certain player they will not want to wait until the cuts and take the chance that he will get released and be exposed to the waiver wire.

If you are going to trade away a player that will not make your team anyway for a player that will not make the other team anyway then there is no reason to put it off.

OK, Jack just answered my question...if he's right then he answered my question. So, is he right?

What are the rules for signing a player who is cut in training camp? Is there a waiver process where the bottom rung teams get first dibs? If so, a team might want to trade before a player is cut in TC to avoid missing them if they don't clear waivers. If not, then this post is a pure waste of your and my time.

Every player that is cut goes on the waiver wire and there is a priorty schedule for which teams get first dibs on the players. I do not know exactly how it is determined or what the rotation is but I do know that it exists. If you would like more details on the process perhaps Adam could fill you in.

WAIVER WIRE. Generally, any released player with four (4) or less credited seasons is placed on waivers at 4 PM on the date he is officially released, if said release is before 4 PM. Any team can submit claims for any of the recently waived players (note a released player with more than 4 credited seasons is deemed to be "released" rather than "waived"). When a player is claimed by more than one team, then the team with the worst record in the 2005 NFL regular season will be awarded the player (and assume the provisions of his contract). If the 2005 records of two or more clubs who claim the same player are identical, then additional tie breakers are used to determine to which team the player is allocated. Note if a team is awarded a player, then the club will most likely have to release a player currently on their roster in order to not exceed the previously noted 53 man roster limit.

Thanks BigD...I totally forgot about the veteran exemption to the waiver wire process.

I think we'd consider a CB such as Jones or Reeves. Both are very solid young players but one is no better than a 4th Cb next year. They have real value.

I am not sure what value Coleman and Shanle have. Shanle is a 4-3 backer whose ideally a nickel only guy and special teamer. Those guys get cut often enough. Coleman is a guy whose best served on the inactive list. He's kinda big and kinda slow.

Coleman is a good depth DE in the 3-4, if only because he is really good against the run. He's been on our roster a while now. It just so happens that we are stacked at his position with guys who are both good against the run AND can actually pressure the backfield as well.

I could see a team like SF biting on Coleman.

As far as Shanle, I have received word that we are trading him for Richard Seymour.
