Trade Barbie Carpenter for the Chief'sDerrick Johnson straight up. Both are former first rounders. Johnson is less of a bust compared to Barbie. johnson was at monster at Texas. Played sideline to sideline. He's a thumper and a solid cover linebacker pass defender.Don't think he has been used properly in K.C. He will be rejuvenated playing in Texas again and can be nickle LB.

I think Spencer's a good player and has a lot of potential.

Merriman's a little washed up, as everyone else has said. However, I get the feeling his career will be restarted depending if he goes to the right spot. Dallas would definitely qualify as one of those spots. I just don't think he's worth sitting and retarding Spencer

I think Spencer might be a good ILB opposite Brady. The Cover ILB. I have thought that since last year.

Merriman + reconstructed knee - steroids = just a guy.
Merriman + reconstructed knee = poor 2009 season but bounces back in 2010 after a full year recovery and makes some team very happy

Johnson doesnt fit this scheme any better than Carpenter does. He's been pretty mediocre since the day he set foot in the league too.

You knows it wierd, guy gets two sacks in 5 plays vs Carolina, and from what I could tell hardly played at all (if any) vs Denver and KC.

Those two sacks werent fluke plays either, he beat a very good young RT twice, easily.

Agreed. He's likely not ready to play his pass coverage duties as an OLB. And I don't know how he is against the run. But he could get a little playing time to spell Spencer. Then maybe they won't be so gassed in crunch time. JMO.

I would not say he is mediocre. I agree with you that he does not fit the OLB position in a 34 but as an OLB in a 43, he's pretty good.

Excluding 2009, here are his numbers.

2005
16 G 16 GS 95 tackles, 79 Solo, 16 Asst, 2 Sacks, 5 PDef, 2 FF.

2006
13 G 12 GS 75 tackles, 57 Solo, 18 Asst, 4.5 Sacks, 3 PDef, 2 FF.

2007
16 G 16 GS 94 tackles, 83 Solo, 11 Asst, 4 Sacks, 6 PDef, 2 INTs, 3 FF.

2008
14 G, 14 GS, 85 Tackles, 68 Solo, 17 Asst, 1.5 Sacks, 6 PDef, 1 INT, 4 FF.

That's fairly productive for an OLB in a 43.

I do, however, agree with you on your assesment of his effectiveness in a 34 scheme. He might fit as the Cover ILB in a 34 but he would probably never be able to play OLB in that scheme.

Could have swore fatso even said exactly that after the Carolina game, and yet he still didnt play him the next two weeks

I get it that he probably doesnt know all the OLB duties yet, but there are plenty of plays where we have 4 down guys rush the QB in an obvious passing situation. I dont see why he should get 10-12 snaps a week.

To be fair, San Diego's defense has blown ever since Wade left anyways. Part of Merriman's drop-off could also be because of that, besides the steroids... but who cares... Spencer is actually playing really well and in coverage, he's a beast...

My guess is they want to leave Spencer in as much as possible to get him experience and to see what he can do. I think that is a mistake. They should let Butler play at least a few snaps to see what he can do.

One problem with that is we are never up enough to force teams to pass. If we could get up two scores and force teams to pass then I think they will play him. We need to keep some bigger players in to rush from a three point stance, IMO. Butler can't play as a defensive lineman leaving him to sub for Spencer only. Just my thoughts though.

Dang, you think the Chiefs would bite on this? I know he's very unpopular in KC now, but this sounds like a trade made in fan heaven. Johnson used to be a legitimate playmaker once upon a time. And Carp has been compared to Vrabel, whom Pioli absolutely LOVES.
