What would this board have been like in the late 80's? Let's recall Dallas has gone from 3 straight NFC Championship games in the early eighties to 10–6 in 1985 to 7–9 in 1986, 7–8 in 1987, and 3–13 in 1988.

Bum Bright said after a loss to Atalanta (worst record that year)-per SI-

" Bright said the Cowboys' play-calling "horrified" him. "It doesn't seem like we've got anybody in charge who knows what he's doing, other than Tex," he added. Bright also allowed as how he thought that the top draft pick, defensive tackle Danny Noonan, and running back Herschel Walker weren't being used enough, considering all the money they get paid. Bright is in banking, mortgaging and oil. When you pay for a high-priced oil rig it gets put to use. Now."

Tex Schramm said- "There's an old saying, "If the teacher doesn't teach, the student doesn't learn,' " Schramm said on his radio show. That was the day after the Cowboys' 27-17 loss to Detroit, a team that had come into the game tied with Kansas City, the Giants and the Rams for the worst record in the NFL.

And later...

"Some of the things we're doing are frankly mystifying. It's very seldom I put myself in a position of giving the players a reason for losing, but I'm not sure it's all on the players. When things aren't working and you continue to see the same things, it shakes your confidence."

Just wondering what everyone thinks this board would be doing during those times. Especially those posters who abhor "distractions" and act like none of the circus happening today could ever have happened under Landry.

What did Roger say about Landry's team then?

So what is wrong with the Cowboys? Roger Staubach says, "It's a team of whiners, of guys who play to their weaknesses instead of forgetting about them and playing to their strengths. You could see that in the poll that was taken a few years ago, when players were asked which quarterback they preferred. White or Gary Hogeboom, and they chose Hogeboom. If I'd been [White], I'd have gotten in the locker room and confronted every one of those guys.
"Instead of leadership, they had a bunch of people making excuses, and that's still the mood around there. And when you have that, you don't have a team."

And Shramm summed up the media's influence-

"The media around the country are just as anxious to see us come down as to do well. But there's one thing the media don't want of the Dallas Cowboys, and that's to see us go away."

Well playoff games were actually won in that decade so I'm not sure it would have been that bad.

And remember in 1986, there was NO gm meddling but-

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]"For the first time, Schramm asserted his control over the makeup of Landry's staff, hiring Paul Hackett as offensive coordinator."

You young Jerry-haters will love this but when negotiations were underway for him to buy the team-

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]With the deal almost completed, Bright and Jones agreed to flip a coin over the final $300,000. According to Bright's son, Jones flipped the coin, which hit the ceiling and a wall before landing in an ashtray in Bright's office. As Jones, who had called tails, rushed to see the coin, Bright remained at his desk.

Heads won.

He later purchased a two-headed quarter from a magic shop and sent it to Jones as a joke. The attached note read: "You'll never know."

"Dad told him to think about that every time his head hit the pillow at night," Clay Bright said.

How about how Landry would never put up with disgruntled players-

Tony Dorsett, one of the Cowboys' greatest stars ever, sits on the bench and mopes. "You going to come to the Commanders game and watch my two or three plays?" he says to a visitor. The other players say Dorsett still has all his moves, but the Cowboy running game has changed. The quick traps designed for Dorsett, behind a mobile line, have been replaced by the raw power and speed of Walker working behind the blocking of a front wall that at times averages 294 pounds tackle to tackle, heaviest in the NFL.

Reading this made me think of what is was like back then. Seemingly to us Cowboy fans, we were doomed for years to come. Now that I read it and knowing what was to come for our team, the triplets and all the success we had in the early to mid 90's. Kinda made me smile for a second knowing that one day, maybe soon, we will get that magic combination that takes us back to where America's Team belongs! Folks, we never know what tomorrow holds for us.

Thanks for bringing up these stories from the past 5Countem5.I was a teenager back in the late 80's and didn't follow the stories in the papers and media the way I do now.I'm suprised to see the critisicism from Mr.Bright and Tex about Coach Landry. At the time from what I remember it seemed like Coach Landry would get to retire when he wanted too.I guess if Mr. Bright would have kept the team a few more years maybe Coach Landry would of been gone anyway if the team didn't turn things around.

I never heard or remembered all this either.

My point was would this board have been as bad as it today or worse? I would bet it would be 10 times worse because people would be arguing over whether TOM LANDRY should stay or go.

And people think they are divided over TO- we might have had a few killings dealing with Landry.

You're under estimating the very spoiled nature of Cowboys fans. The playoff thing is something to really hang their hats on right now but we could have won 2 or 3 playoff games this decade and the way these last two seasons ended would have still brought out all the same stuff, the same arguments, the same complaints, and the same threads.

The only difference is they'd trade saying playoff wins for Superbowl wins.

You know it's funny that you ask this because I just finished posting about how when I was young and a new Cowboys fan I experienced the Cowboys lose those 3 NFC Championships and the lean years that followed. I didn't have the successful 70's to reflect on and compare the team to much as the younger generation these days doesn't have the successful 90's to reflect upon on. I really think this board would have been much the same in the 80's as it is today because you'd have that 70's crowd who would have those superbowls to judge the teams success upon much the same as most of us these days have the 90's superbowls to judge the teams success upon.

This board would be a madhouse. Can you imagine the arguments over Landry, Bright, Brandtor Schramm being the "problem".

Had the game passed Landry by. Had Schramm messed in Landry's business too much. Had bright over stepped his boundary.

Then it would have been really bad in 1989 when Landry was so honorably dismisseed.
