I really like the idea of spending more premium picks on the defensive line, specifically the interior. I know that isn't Marinelli’s style, but how would you feel about a guy like Vita Vea?

Bryan: I think he would be outstanding but you also have to consider where is the best position for Maliek Collins? They tried him at the three-technique and it just wasn’t as good. When they moved him back to the one-technique, he was a better player. Where Vea could come into play is if they get to their pick and they’re wiped out. This is where that decision might be made.

David: It’s hard to argue that defensive tackle isn’t a need for this team – especially since we don’t yet know what’s going to happen with David Irving. Vea is one of the most intriguing talents that I’ve watched so far in this draft process, but I think this coaching staff would be far more likely to draft a three-technique than a nose tackle in the first round.

I agree with BB here. Collins just didnt seem like a natural fit at the 3tech. Early in the yr he had some trouble but as the yr went on he looked really good playing the 1tech. Then Irving got hurt. I think Collins needs to stay at the 1. He has the size and strength to be a force there. There are alot better prospects for the 3 in this draft and Taven Bryan in this draft. And then there always a guy named David Irving.

I’m cornfused. Collins played 3-Tech last year and got 5 sacks. This year they moved him to 1-Tech and his production dropped plus he played injured..

What’s he talking about?

That's my confusion too.

This article from preseason talks about the options at 3 Tech and how Collins doesn't seem like a good 1 Tech as he struggles at the point of attack. Was he much better this year when he was at the 1 Tech?

And I found this quote in an article from PFT from preseason as well:

Collins plays the three-technique, one of the most important positions in Marinelli’s scheme. Hall of Famer Warren Sapp manned that position for Marinelli in Tampa Bay. Collins has studied some the best three-techniques ever, including Sapp, in hopes of becoming the next great one.

“The standards are basically written,” Collins said. “Me being a three-technique, the standards are in the history books of what three-techniques have done in this system. I like to say that’s the standard. The people like John Randle, guys like Warren Sapp or [Keith] Millard, who started the system. [Anthony] McFarland, those types of players.”

so tired of this organization playing guys in the wrong position and then try to pass it off like it's a problem solved. Irving is the starting 3 tech and Collins should be his back up. Tired of all this talk of collins playing the 1 tech. If he was a 1 tech they would have played him there from the ******* start.

Leave him where he's best at and stop trying to bs people about how great he was at the 1 tech. Save it cause I ain't buying it.

ps i ain't talking about the op or any other posts. I'm talking about that damn jones family spewing their bs

ya Im confused also. The buzz I got was we had found our D3. MCollins came outa camp with a foot injury and no little camp.

Just heard Broaddas on the Fan. He said Collins played well his rookie year at the 1T and then played well again this year once he went back to the 1T. Thinks they will look for more of a 3T than 1T. Mentioned that Hurst from Michigan is a possibility.

well if they had a retinue of quality back ups that'd be fine. We were so short at DT we snatch Price of Steelers PS and he got significant snaps

Yeah but the problem is that when you read stories about the 2016 season, it seems to indicate Collins played mostly the 3 Tech and Collins is even quoted talking about his play at the 3 Tech then and into the future.

Agreed. Collins should be the primary backup at both DT spots. And we should move Irving around to create mismatches.

if they'd get off there *** and find a decent one then they wouldn't have to play guys out of position. Some excuse that is. "We don't have anybody, because we don't have anybody". ******* typical

Sorry but I don't agree with much of this. At all. You don't make Collins a backup. He can be an impact player.

Yep. We got Collins playing at 1T and Byron Jones playing at FS. They can be key contributors on our defense but we decide to waste their abilities by playing them out of position.

He's not a 3T in this defense IMO. That dude is generally the best player on Marinelli's defense. Of course someone like Sapp can screw that comparison up real quick!

I just want more interior pressure, although Atlanta counter balanced that when they allowed us to rush up field and then burned us. It was genius allowing Irving to rush himself upfield out of the play!

I think he's a rotational guy either way. He does the stunts Marinelli likes at 1T and he's got a bit of pass rush juice at 3T, but overall he's been mediocre at both spots.

I'm not writing him off yet, but I wouldn't count on him to start either.

All I am saying is that when you read the stories after the 2016 and in preseason camp, the Cowboys were sure talking like he was their 3 Tech of the future. Collins started the season at the 3 Tech until Paea got hurt and they had to reshuffle the line.

Im confused too, what the position collins play in the 2016 season? 1 tech or 3 tech?

Yea. Solid player. Not everyone has to be a star. T. Crawford has always been a good player. People have always hated on him because he never became an All Pro 3-tech. I think it's the same with Collins. He impressed and people thought he would become a star. He'll more likely be like a Hitchens. A solid, reliable, versatile player. No one ever appreciated Hitchens and now no one wants to see him leave.

I think thats why we're starting to hear this Dallas rumblings. The guy is fierce, but he plays out of control and with little to no technique. Its great when he makes the play but like in the atlanta game they showed the outcome when he doesnt.
