It never ceases to amaze me how harsh some fans are towards players. Players that even did well here, but maybe ran into bad luck. The latest one is the Austin Miles thread. The guy was awesome, and I'm sure you were all singing his praises in that game in KC. Do you think he really wanted to have injury problems, and be a late off-season pick up by the Browns at this point in his career? Judging by a few of the "good riddance" and "watch him get injured" comments you would think that would be the case. Wish the guy luck and move on. He played his heart out here from what I saw.

This extends to a lot more players. Both former, and still on the team. If you were in the position of being an NFL player looking at this $$$ wise I'm pretty sure 95% of you would be trying to avoid everything from not being on the field, and risking losing it all to someone else looking to replace you. This goes for both former players and current.

The NFL is perhaps the hardest league to stay healthy, make a Drew Pearson or Everson Walls type career in, and still not be looking over your shoulder. Hell, on Cowboyszone even Everson Walls has had his haters.

Good luck Miles, I hope everything works out well in in Cleveland. Most of us loved you in Dallas.

That is what I really dislike about our fanbase sometimes. As soon as the player doesn't wear the star anymore, they are exiled from all respect.

Miles was a very good Cowboy, and the only negative on him was in regards to his health. To wish ill upon one of our former players is ridiculous.

Gotta wish Miles the very best in his career! He was nothing but a great team player.

I dont wish any ill will on Smiles, but if he isnt wearing the Blue Star any longer, he's no longer one of us. If he has 100 catches in Cleveland or just 1 catch makes no difference to me, he's not helping our team anymore.

Injury cut short Irvin's career. Did you get mad at him for that?

I wish no ill will on Miles, he was a terrific player for us when healthy as he was born and went to college only about 1 1/2 hrs away from where I live. With that said....I don't have a problem with anybody criticizing him. At the end of the day we aren't talking about freak injuries like tears, breaks, ect. At some point you have to figure out how to either prevent or play through hamstring strains. I have a hard time not attributing his problems to either 1) lack of preparation or 2) inability to play through minor nagging injuries.

I can't be warm and fuzzy over people who disappear after getting big contracts. Him and Jay Ratliff probably high five when they run into each other. If he was a "team" guy he woulda took a pay cut to stay. He should feel guilty.

Nice guy, never a single report that questioned his preparation or desire, coaches loved him, just couldn't keep it healthy after getting a contract that, at the time, he deserved and we didn't know we would get screwed on.

Hope he gets healthy and contributes to that team (late career resurgence like Terry Glenn).

Obviously he was doing it on purpose, faking injuries and throwing his multi-million dollar career away then? Makes perfect sense.

Ratliff isn't Austin, and is a topic for another discussion.

But his effort on the field to run the routes and attack the ball in the air wasn't the same (after the contract). Yes he had injuries, but the guy didn't go all out on the field when he was healthy enough to play.

No he wasn't faking, neither was Ratliff at first and neither one of them threw away their 14 and 18 million dollar guaranteed money and neither one of them was there when the fans were needing a couple more games to get over the 8-8 hump. It's nothing personal, they both might be great people but they were disappointments on the field.

Poor Miles. He's set for life.

I remember one great game & that's about it other than hearing he hurt his hamstring again.

Good guy, I had really high hopes after his breakout season.
Didn't live up to his contract in the end. Not his fault just the way it was.

Yes there was, I read a thread here last year that Miles wouldn't do the recommended rehab.

Another thing that I feel plays into the way fans treat former players is the big contracts and free agency. I have no emotional attachment to any of the players. They are hired guns, nothing more. When a big contract is waved in their face, they bolt to another team. There is no loyalty other than the loyalty to the almighty dollar. I can't blame them for wanting better for their families though. Years ago, a player was drafted and I knew that they were a Cowboy until a trade took place or they got cut. They was around long enough to get emotionally attached to them. Now, they hang around until their rookie contract is up and then they go for the money if they don't get what they want from the Cowboys. I find it hard to care what happens to these guys when they are just waiting for the next contract to come along. Another factor that plays into things is that it is easier to care about these players when they are winners. Due to the lack of recent success, I sure don't have a soft spot because of the Super Bowl or playoff wins.
