Some Putty perspective

lol yea, ok.
Lmao because Hurns
that is arguable.
if u look at the makeup of the personnel, u will see we lost dez and switzer while gaining austin, thompson, gallup and hurns.
i would argue that austin > switzer.
lets leaves the comparison between dez vs. thompson, gallup and hurns.
i would argue that dez of 2017 is worst than hurns, gallup and thompson.

so why the apparent dropoff.
i think it is partially sync between qb and wr, which takes time.
it is also possible that dak has regressed, the much bigger worry.
Dak regressed other stuff is just word vomit

the offense started worst than expected.
the defense started in pretty much the best case scenario.
currently not a contender and the rams would roast this team as it stands.

so the questions are:
oline - does playing together and more experience solidify the line without tfred? it will get better, but doubtful it would be a good run blocking line.
tfred - knock on wood, he gets back by mid/late season. perhaps the biggest question for the season.
wrs - the fas does soften the wr rebuild. are they as good as last year by mid season, probably. is there upside? some. though probably drafting a wr high next season.
tes - rico is the big hope. swaim is playable but barely. best case the other guy just blocks.
dak - he is a rpo type guy and he needs a multi-wr look to be comfortable. is it a matter of more playing time with the new guys to really get him back on track?

the d is looking good and will be better as more passrushers come back in gregory and irving.
looks like a top 5 d or even better if passrushers kick in.

if tfred comes back 100%, we got a chance to give dak the time and security.
otherwise we are talking tanking after game 8.

It all comes down to Dak, IMO. This defense is the real deal, and while they're not Minnesota or LA Rams Superbowl-type good, they're a top ten unit. The OL is still above average even with no Frederick and Tyron and La'El getting flagged left and right - that's just how good they were to start with. Zeke is still doing Zeke things - there are still a lot of plays where he's turning LOS stuffs into 3 yards. The WRs aren't that good but are getting open on film.

Dak's the key to this whole thing. If he figures out what the heck he's doing and gets back on track, this offense could roar to life, coupled with the best Cowboys defense of this past decade and we could make some noise in the NFC. Or we could be in for a repeat of the early 2000s, where an elite defense drags a scrubby quarterback behind them for 5 or 6 wins. Personally I'm a believer in Dak, but these last two games have been pretty freaking scary - his occasional off-target throws, aversion to throwing outside, and inability to see the whole field always been issues, but it's just like they've all been magnified tenfold since 2016. I think that T-Will, Gallup and Hurns have something like 3 catches between them in 2 games, for example. It's everything bad about Dak taken to the extreme, with none of the poise and confidence that helped him succeed in the first place.

2018 is all riding on him, and being completely honest, I don't think he's going to turn it around. My only hope is that we can Linehan after the season, keep Garrett hands-off (since we're never going to fire him), and go install some fresh blood at OC to make Dak great again. We saw what putting Byron Jones in the right system did for him - I just hope we can find a guy who does that for our quarterback.

without tfred, not so sure we have a top-2 ol.

Top two? Our offensive line is struggling right now. They are half of what they were in 2016. It's the main reason our offense is having problems. Dak is not a superstar, but when the OL is playing at its best he does pretty well.

very true sir
linehan just needs to go
he is a misfit for the right offense like marinelli's prevent is a misfit for our team
