If this was the decision they were going to make, why wasn't it done months ago?

Why wasn't the player given the best chance for a new deal elsewhere?

Why didn't the team free up the cap space when they really needed it most?

Why didn't they do it when the other top receivers were available?

Does anyone in that building know what they're doing?

Not that difficult. Dooley left, everyone but Jerry was ready to move on. We did make a move on Watson but KC overpaid. Releasing Dez early means any WR we target in free agency has more leverage and will get more money. Most of all it took months to get Jerry on board. The correct decision was made, the timing was not perfect for Dez, but that allows him to push is victim BS, so all is good.

The one thing that people have posted on this thread that is absolutely not true is that there was no reason to wait until the middle of June to release Bryant. It made a lot of sense to wait until Hurns was signed before releasing Bryant. That happened on March 24th. The plan probably was to try and get a free agent receiver to replace Bryant and then cut him. Hurns was signed so cheaply, though, that the Cowboys probably felt they had the option of keeping both of them. After they signed Hurns, there probably was an internal debate on this matter. They probably set themselves the deadline of April 13th to make a decision, since April 16th is when players begin to work out, and injuries occur.
Some people think that waiting this long hurt Bryant's chances of getting a deal on the open market. That is almost certainly false. It would have helped Bryant if he was cut before free agency began, but then it would have given other receivers more leverage over the Cowboys in negotiation. By the time they signed a potential replacement receiver, the free agent market had already settled. All of the big money free agency deals had already occurred by March 24th. There has been minimal changes in team's cap situations since that date and now. This entire narrative that waiting hurt Bryant's chances of getting a contract from a new team is a thoughtless media driven one.
