I'm one of the biggest Romo fans here and for the life of me I can't understand why we are talking about Romo. Dak didn't replace Romo because he was a better QB than Romo but because Romo has missed 36 games from injury and many of them in the last 2 years. We had a shot to skip the years between Romo and finding a viable QB and we took it. It's not any more complicated than that. I personally would have liked to see Romo come back because we had a good team I didn't think a rookie could carry us through the playoffs -- we probably didn't have the defense in the end regardless. I can understand the decision to transition to a young guy having a career year his rookie season. You pretty much summed up my other post earlier in the thread...
Right here....
Uphill battle for Dak replacing the godlike Romo. Who did Romo replace? Drew Bledslug... Romo's first two years starting should have been a walk in the park and all the criticism he received was warranted.
Dak's first two years.... Year 1. The haters looked but couldn't speak because he did unreal things. Year 2? The haters made up for being muted in year 1.
Most unfair criticism in his first two years? Dak by a mile.
Lame.
In any case none of this is relevant to assessing Dak. He was and is not a finished product and the coaches know that. They didn't let him take a 7-step drop without play action until week 14 of season 1 because his footwork wasn't where it needed to be. That says it all. I'll just keep saying it but if we see Dak attack the sidelines 10-20 yards down the field this year we are going to be really happy at the QB position for a long time. If he doesn't have the footwork or arm or accuracy or whatever to be able to do that then defenses are going to continue to clog the middle of the field like they did last year and the offense is always going to struggle for consistency. That's what defenses did differently from year 1 to year 2 and explains why Dak didn't have the anywhere close to the same kind of year.
Dak has 2 years to show he can do it. I personally wouldn't want to pay franchise money for a guy that can't make all the throws inside of 20 yards. So we will just have to see how it plays out.
