  • Finally, we come to OBJ. This is a player that Jerry would've signed years ago because of the flash and the name. Instead, so far, he's opted out of OBJ, and went with Hilton. Hilton saved the game against Philly, and he's providing a leadership to our WRs and experience that is beneficial, compared to what OBJ likely would provide. This was another excellent move by Jerry.

Hilton cost OBJ a *lot* of money.
Giggity!

There are many occasions where people, including myself, will get on the FO for being very quiet in FA. Sometimes, we, myself included, will think that the FO isn't interested. Sometimes, it seems warranted, however, some marquee moves that we wanted turned out to be good nonsignings. Thus, it's a good reminder that sometimes, the best signings are the ones that you do not make. Take the cases of Randy Gregory, Lael Collins, and OBJ (so far).

  • In the case of Randy Gregory, this was a player that it was desired that he stay. However, he decided to go to Denver when the suspension clause was entered into his contract. This caused an uproar. However, when you look at his stats (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GregRa00.htm), you will see that he's only played in 6 games through 15 games so far. He recorded one sack against Houston and one against the 49ers. Since then, he's been very quiet. Additionally, his tackle numbers have been very quiet leaving a lot to be desired. To make matters worse, he received a suspension following an altercation with the Rams following the conclusion of the game (https://www.nfl.com/news/broncos-ra...ushi-suspended-one-game-for-roles-in-postgame) for one week. Thus, he's not been reliable for Denver in terms of being on the field. Considering what he is being paid, this is a flop. Don't forget, he's on Denver's strength, which is the D. All in all, I'm glad the FO did not sign him.
  • Lael Collins was our RT up until going into this season when he moved on to the Bengals. So far this season, I'm not impressed by what he's done with Cincinnati, and, when healthy, Steele has been a fantastic replacement. In the meantime, we've also done well with Tyron Smith coming back. Well done to the FO here.
There are more examples of good moves made by the FO, especially in regards to those that they didn't sign this season. These are just 3 massive examples where they were pressured into making moves and found that they made the correct decisions in not signing these players.

they tried to sign randy and he bailed. and jerry has tried everything in his power to bring odell into the fold. they’ve tripped and lucked up in scenarios like these forcing them to grasp at straws. the straws have stirred the drink fortunately

Collins is out for the year for the Bengals, ACL or an Achilles, can't remember right now. Tore it against NE last week.
Both he and Steele are out. But it was still the right move to make at the time to let him walk. And we will get a 4th round comp pick as well.

Gregory was ... as Jerry would say ... Serendipity ... We gained 3 players by that lucky debacle.
Signed Fowler, and re-signed Armstrong, and drafted Sam Williams.

Von Miller was just too much $$$ there was no way he was going to come here, and I am glad he didn't. He is out for the year as well. But for the right money, yeah, sign him, but not for what he got.

Wagner, another player I glad did not come here, but I also would have been ok with him also. He thought the Rams was a better place to get to the SB. But he got his $$$ also.

As for Suh and Joseph, it was hit or miss for me. Could they help, or would they be another Poe. I don't think they are helping the Eagles all that much.

Hankins was good trade and pick up, but have we seen his true impact yet? Too bad he got injured, but he will be back and much needed for the playoffs.

OBJ, I was ok either way signed or not, but was leaning more toward not. But now with Hilton. We are fine.

We get a comp pick for a player we cut?

I absolutely 100 percent agree with you.
I had zero issue with letting both go.
Gregory was kept too long IMO.
Collins seemed to get lazy IMO.
Sometimes like you say "Good Non Signings" my friend you are exactly right.
Non re signings are as important as good signings.

That wasnt my point.

First of all the signings they made werent very successfull.
The ones they didnt make wasnt because they didnt want them. It was because players didnt want to come here (Gregory, OBJ ...). It is not that the Dallas Cowboys is a place you want to be as a player who is interessted in success in his sport.

The moves we make are more of kneejerk reactions than long planned moves. Of course everybody can get lucky as we did here or there. But that will never be a successful way to win something meaningful.

Like JJ wants to sell us for years now that he always was someone who has taken risks. Well that is rubbish. You wont be successful by taking risk: That is the definition of "risk". A risk is something that likely will fail if you are trying to achieve it. So you may have success if you take a risk once. But that is pure luck and not knowledge. If you take risk after risk after risk you will fail and not be successful.
But if you are sucessful (like JJ is) that is because you made good decissions. And good decissions are the ones that minimize risks.

SJ and JJ dont do a good job. Not even an average job. They both are very bad at what they are trying to do. Dont get blinded by stuff that happens out of luck. And dont judge mediocrety as success (as our FO wants to sell us).
Nope, can't agree with you on well basically your entire post, nothing.

Just chill a bit and realize that this is a special season you are currently witnessing, don't take it for granted, we get further this year than most are speculating.

That holds significant value, and just take that value to the bank.

Anyone crying and complaining about this seasons Cowboys hasn't been around long enough to know differently.

We have been through a serious dry spell, and time for that scenario to change.

Collins started out playing like crap for Cincinnati, and almost got Joey B killed at the start of the year. He got very much better during the year until he really tore up his knee. Think it is both an ACL and MCL tear. Based on his lack of work ethic, he may be done. He has been paid and paid well, so he can retire and do whatever big lazy young men do. Letting him go was the right move.

OBJ was never viable given the fact that he isn't healthy. Randy G is a pure and simple case of you can't pay someone who is both crazy, stupid and injury prone.

A made a comment in the "Dak is elite" thread...or some such thing that came up...I made mention that T.Y. bailed us out big time. Excellent signing if he can do that often,

This team right now should have Hankins, Suh AND Joseph all under contract as DTs. The single biggest reason Dallas struggles in the playoffs is teams like Philly and San Fran bully their DLine. Adding the other two guys ( both wound up in Philly) would have completed our tough team makeover. Front office is clueless to this fact. Sometimes you have to choose football over salary cap.
Many times it feels like we are playing the salary cap game for the "next season". It is getting old. Why not solidify the middle? Just guessing, but they feel they have players that are developing. Then when they become good players it is too late, because we lost other great players due to age or contract. Very frustrating.

Good post. Jerry like a lot of our fans are usually attracted to bright shinny objects. Have to be smart with giving out big money to big names. With salary cap constraints there is only so much money you can spend on big name players especially when you payed big money dedicated to your QB and RB.
