Leary would start for over half the teams in the league. You don't give up an above average starting quality player for nothing.

If a team offers a player that can help this year, then you deal him. If a team is only offering peanuts, you don't. It's really pretty simple.

no qb2 is going to replace romo.
if romo goes down, we may as well tank the season and get a better draft pick.

you get romo killed by weakening the ol, we lose 2 years wandering in the wilderness.

agree on cutting gachkar, mcclain and either wilcox or church.
though these can take care of themselves if injuries happen during camp.

Actually, for QB2 of the Cowboys to have a shot of winning games is twofold. 1) Sign Tim Tebow and 2) the coaching staff has to be able to adjust to its personnel and game plan accordingly, become zone read offense. Not much chance of either scenario happening but the ability for coaching staff to adapt is the most outlandish of the two. Which is sad because Cowboys have the best run blocking offensive players (not just OL, but TE and WR units too) in league and some great weapons in the backfield.

Let him hit FA next year. Food depth for '16 and a comp pick in' 17.

Comp picks were awarded to give teams at least some kind of compensation for losing FAs. It is the lowest amount a team can get and shouldn't be counted on.

A 5th round comp pick is really a 6th round pick AND it is awarded a year later IF the team loses more FAs than it signs........so if your team can get a player or pick this year for a player they won't re-sign then they should do it.....

What makes you think he won't?

Did you see the deal Jeremy Parnell got? And he started like twice.

Parnell was in the mix, wasn't inactive for two years in a row. And plays tackle not guard.

Their situations are not analogous.

You're right - they are not. Ronald Leary is an inordinately more attractive option for teams looking for a guard in free agency.

Yeah, but if all you could get for Leary is a 5th or later anyway, the depth is more valuable for this year + you still end up getting a pick. You don't have to worry about us signing more FAs than we lose.

But we also get the 2.5m which is starter money.......it is the 16th largest cap hit on the team

And DAL won't be getting any comp picks this year since we signed 3 and lost 2

The money is insurance for the OL, which will be the engine that drive the running game and protect the $20M qb.
if the qb gets injured badly, it is season over for 2016 and possibly 2017 and 2018.

There is no way Leary signs a deal worth $6.4 annually for 5 years with $14.5 in guarantees.

JMO, but the smart play is to deal Leary and McFadden for draft picks in training camp when someone really needs a guard or running back. I can see not dealing him now, all we'd get are low ball offers from teams trying o get something for nothing. but once someone loses a guard and loses a running back, I think we could get a 4th for each of them.

Leary has scrubbed anything Cowboy related from his Twitter page....real mature

Previously, Leary's bio read, "Offensive Lineman for the DALLAS COWBOYS. Blessed For This Opportunity Wearin The Biggest Chip On My Shoulder EveryDay.. #cowboyszone."

He's since edited it to read, "Offensive Lineman in the National Football Leage.. Blessed For This Opportunity Wearin The Biggest Chip On My Shoulder EveryDay.. #LsUp #GodGotMe."

Leary also changed his profile picture from one of the Cowboys offensive line to him in a Captain America T-shirt. The only thing that remained the same is that he identified himself as still living in Dallas, Texas, but that's not much consolation.
