Spagnola: Gary is Just what the Doctor Ordered

Not saying it wasn't a good trade but can we stop acting like we saved a ton over money by not giving Parsons the same contract the Packers did?
Thing is, we didn't have to give Micah the same contract GB did. If we had our heads on straight we would've locked Parsons up after 3 All-Pro years when the going rate was $34M AAV. So when anyone uses $47M they're ignoring the Jerry bungle factor to fill their argument with a lot of hot air fueled by hate for Parsons.

FWIW brought to you by AI. I just recall hearing he was going to be released, but I'm not pretending other than by reputation I know anything about the player:

Why the Packers Didn't Want to Retain Him

  • The Decline in Production: Gary signed a massive four-year, $96 million extension in 2023. However, he never reached double-digit sacks in a single season. In 2025, he finished with 7.5 sacks and completely vanished down the stretch, recording zero sacks over the final five weeks of the year. [1, 2]
  • An Untenable Cap Hit: Gary carried a massive $28.02 million salary-cap charge into 2026, the second-highest on the team behind quarterback Jordan Love. Paid like a top-12 elite edge rusher, the front office decided his level of impact did not justify the financial burden. [1]
  • Salary Cap Emergency: Entering the offseason, Green Bay was over the salary cap and desperately needed room to sign other players and manage the roster. [1]

Were They Going to Cut Him?

  • Yes, He Was a Prime Cut Candidate: Because Gary had zero guaranteed money left on the final two years of his deal, the Packers could release or trade him while freeing up a massive $10.9 million in immediate cap space. [1, 2]
  • The "Goodbye" Drama: The writing was on the wall in early March when Gary's Instagram account posted a farewell message. Though his agent initially claimed the account was hacked, NFL insiders confirmed the Packers were already actively preparing to release him if a trade partner couldn't be found. [1, 2]
  • The Last-Minute Trade Rescue: Hours before the free agency period officially began, the Green Bay Packers salvaged the situation by trading Gary to Dallas for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick. Dallas was only willing to take him because Gary agreed to a restructured contract, taking a $10 million pay cut to facilitate the move and avoid being flat-out released into the free-agent market. [1, 2, 3]

Are you Micah’s agent? How do you know he would have accepted anything at that time?

No one, or at least not many, hate Micah. Many of us think we are better off without him so we can improve the overall defense. That’s not hate

Funny how you complain about being called haters but then use the term yourselves. Lol

Easy there, Captain-Save-A-Jerry. Seems the random arrow found its target.

No one needs to be Micah's agent, they only need to look at how the markets work and had been working. I've been over this quite a few times after the Micah salary inflators do their thing but let me lay it out here. After Parsons Year 3, Bosa was tops in the league at $34M AAV, signed before that season began. Bosa was fresh off of beating out Parsons for DPOY the year prior. With Micah next in line to get paid, how much more than $34M could he demand seeing as Bosa just topped him with performance the year before? So you give him $35M, the player is happy because they're top paid plus injury protection, and the agent is happy because they have another "highest paid" notch in their belt to promote to other athletes. Even if it's $36M that's still a lot less than $47M (so is $37M or $38M).

It would be agent malpractice not to pursue this seeing as Parsons plays violent and could get injured and lose out on top $. So of course he approached Jerry as he said he did and reported that Jerry said no. It is also front office malpractice to not lock up a 3-time All-Pro pass rusher, one that you lucked into when Denver took Surtain. If Jerry wasn't sure about Parsons, maybe you trade then or still lock him up and then when Crosby, Watt and/or Garrett sign and you want to pivot and trade him, he is the youngest and cheapest of the blue chip pass rushers. Done at the right time (and not 8 days before the season) that could have netted a much bigger gold mine of a return. But when you "$47M!" exaggerators use this hot air reasoning to justify an emotional trade, you also have to ignore Jerry's short-sighted nonsense that makes this marshmallow excuse-making necessary.

What's pretty funny is after the trade Jerry went chasing after Crosby whose extension was signed at ....... wait for it ...... $35.5M AAV, or about what you could have had Parsons at and traded away for a big haul of picks instead of now offering up picks. This is what you people want to defend just to spite Micah? Still a free country but don't get mad when that tapdance is pointed out.

Lol. Get it through your thick skull, I don’t hate Micah and am not saying anything to spite him. ;)

We don’t know for sure if his agent would have advised him to wait until the following to get more money since the cap rises every year. And we’re talking about Mufaleta.

It has been mentioned several times that we could have had both Micah and Q. I would have been very happy with that. But I can almost positively guarantee that if Jerry had signed Micah, he would not have traded for Q and we wouldn’t have ended up with Caleb and Malachi (of course we still have to wait and see how they turn out). So while you ignore that Micah was ineffective at seasons end, important games and the playoffs, now we may have a more solid offense all around. I’m not even blaming Micah for his fall off in those situations, as he was used incorrectly and we would have continued doing so on top of the lack of overall talent and horrible coaching. So to me the future potentially looks brighter without him. You may not agree but I can’t imagine that you think I’m being unreasonable.

No. We do know because it's protocol and has been protocol and it makes basic logical financial sense. Money now is worth more than money later. Add in the tremendous injury risk of a violent game and that's even more true. Agents are top financial professionals on the planet and this one is going to suddenly break protocol? Defenders of Jerry's emotional trade need to cast doubt on this known process in order to justify it. That's. Just. Nonsense. It's like saying on draft night, "how do we know Caleb Downs is going to sign his rookie contract because he's represented by so and so agent?" Free to argue that, but look like a foot-stamping toddler doing it when you can't make a dent in the ironclad logic.

And did you just also ignore the part that Jerry was chasing Crosby with draft capital AFTER securing Q with draft capital? That's right, because a defender of Jerry has to ignore that too when he could have had Micah for the same money. So you have to file it away under "it would have never happened" when it was more likely to happen had we signed Parsons earlier (the initial ignore task).

So what we have now was no grand vision, it's what we fell into. Kinda like how we fell into Parsons. But "yay Jerry!" Lol.

yay Jerry! Do you fell better now?

Why do you keep ignoring the fact that Micah disappeared way too much? Doesn’t fit your narrative obviously. But but but we have to win a Super Bowl, right? Not with Micah it wasn’t going to happen, at least not because of him. It may have been different if we had used him correctly. You look really nice with the Micah pompoms lol

Never argue with a micah aka softest edge rusher in the NFL, fanboy.

I'm not ignoring it like you're ignoring my multiple points brought up. It wasn't the topic. The topic was about stopping the use of the overinflated "$47M" number as to why we wouldn't be able to sign anyone when we actually took on players who cost more than Micah costs Green Bay. I added on that he'd have been even cheaper if we'd signed him earlier, which is what people need to ignore to promote their imbalanced slander. No one's addressed either of those points (because they can't). Blame everywhere except their beloved Jerry. Why's that? If Micah wasn't the guy, you trade him after Year 3 or you sign him to the cheapest deal you can get. You don't do nothing and watch the price go up only to try later with questionable tactics after stiffing the guy after Year 3. That was okay to you? You've actually not commented on any of that yet despite replying to posts about it with other boondoggle angles designed to not answer it. Keep dancing.

I already did but you chose to ignore it. You have no proof that Micah would have actually signed. Remember when I brought up Mufaleta and you even replied? Would it have been prudent for him to sign the year before? In our eyes, yes I said OUR, it would have been. But we saw what Mufaleta probably did, I know also speculation, when Micah reneged on the deal he made with Jerry. I would have been fine if he signed then but not completely, as I said before he was being used incorrectly and disappeared when we needed him most.

It is always interesting to me when a 7 year vet who was never "the answer" on any team thus far is suddenly pumped up as a savior.

Yes, and I told you it was a BS response to being hemmed in on an argument you can't gainsay in any way. Years of precedence and undisputed financial logic but in this one case, "we don't know what would have happened." Uh huh. One side asked, the other declined. You sow bad blood you make things more difficult later. And they became that way due to your boy Jerry's poor decisions after handling Dak and CeeDee the same way, speaking of precedence. But "yay Jerry, you did good!"

Some fans keep harping on they should have signed him for $34 million. When they already (Micah and his agent) thy were not doing that. And no offer was proven to be on the table.

It is a cop out excuse.
Then the other thing they refuse to admit, Dallas got 6 players for 1 player, regardless of the cost.

Not sure if they are that huge of Micah fans, or just another way to knock the FO for their own reasons.
...Oops ... I will get blasted for that, by a few for supposedly taking up for the FO, which I am not. Most teams would make that trade.
LV did with Crosby until he did not pass his physical.

Was just going to ask if you and he were the same person but I never saw the patented "I told the truth and you can't admit it" foot-stamp out of him when cornered like you do. Cop out, you say? Lol.

It's quite telling that you two defend not doing the logical thing years ago in locking Parsons up after the agent says he asked (which precedence overwhelmingly says he would) and that Jerry refused to do a deal but heap all the blame for that not happening on Parsons' side because "we don't know if he would have signed." They asked. Jerry said no. But Jerry doesn't get the majority blame here after delaying deals for Dak and CeeDee that cost the team more than it should? And now use the inflated $47M expense as the excuse for why it was good to deal him a year later? See? It's not that hard to prove bias. Here we have two Jerry bootlickers refusing to ascribe any blame to Jerry at all where logic proves it should have. Don't worry, I'm sure y'all are still in the will. Lol.

Ah, can't make your argument, so throw out the Jerry bootlicker comments.
And I am right. You can't handle the truth.

Based on we haven't received yet the full trade value of the trade.so I agree in your statement "Let's see what happens but we won the trade
"let's see what happens, but we won the trade" indicates you do not agree with my statement.

There it is! Lol.

The argument is right there. You won't approach it because you can't gainsay it. Just like when you ran from someone else's argument in this very thread earlier. Just pump out the sunshine and then get out of the way. You don't do well when challenged on facts so you should drop "truth" from any spiel of yours.

Yep, you’re a Jerrystan like me now.

Don’t you love the Micahstans though?
