Starting at DT is impressive for a mid round #1 draft pick? Sacks and tackles impresses me, not being a starter.

Now if this was Demarcus Ware or Chris Canty getting injured, I would be pissed.

Ahh I see you havent figured out the difference between the 34 and 43 yet Have you?

He's not even a DT. Do you even have a clue what his role is on our defense? Ware and Ellis are our edge rushers on 3rd down. They will get our sacks.

Canty had like 5-10 more tackles and 2 more sacks last year? He plays on the weak side, so he has more room to operate, and it's not even a big difference. I also have no clue what you mean with this supposed back injury.

People want sacks. People want six tackles a game. People have unreal expectations.

I'm not sure how much you know about 3-4 linemen, but their job is not glamorous. It isn't supposed to be. Their primary job is to eat blockers and plug rushing lanes so those behind them, i.e. the linebackers, can make the plays. If they happen upon a blown assignment and make a nice play in the backfield, great. Kudos for them. But it's a bonus of the job.

Marcus Spears earned his starting job because he's good. He's damn good. And it would be impossible to find a rookie 3-4 end who did better (ever) than Spears did last year. Ever. I mean that.

And how in the hell is he injury prone if he makes it through a 16 game season without so much as a hangnail? If somebody rolls up on you or you step on somebody, there isn't a whole lot you can do.

Most people who know draft picks thought Spears and Ware could have been swapped. The fact that we took him at #20 was an absolute steal. I'm sorry if you can't see that, but I think you're looking in the wrong places.
You sir, are a genius.

Parchy, what has Spears done to impress you? He seems injury prone. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but that doesn't do it for me. I really didn't think he was worth a #1.
Parchy's response was very well said... Stats for a 3-4 lineman don't make the player.
And yes I have watched every Cowboys game since the late 80s.
I luv how people like to throw up how long they've been watching the cowboys as if it makes them that much more knowledgeable. I'd say in this case, your knowledge is a touch off.
Also this bad back that he has will linger on him his entire career.
What bad back injury?

When Woodysgirl goes off, you know she's ticked.. She rarely gets down in the dirt on this board.

:) Not ticked.

Just hate when I see illogical stuff being posted. It's one thing to bang your head, cuz he got injured. Cuz it does suck that he's gonna be out. It's when they start throwing the b word around that I gotta at least respond once.

Going back to my regular chill mode, now.

The skuttlebutt around draft time is that the Cowboys wanted Spears but thought there was no way that Ware would be available at 20.

When Spears dropped all the way to #20, the Cowboys were estatic.

And good synopsis.

The Cowboys wanted a big body on the line. That was Parcells' design ever since he decided to switch to the 3-4.

Spears is a big guy (but not too big as in fat) and powerful with nice speed/quickness for his size.

Are you serious? Spears missed ZERO games last year, and will not miss any from this injury either. If anything this gives us a better look at Ratliff and Hatcher in TC and preseason.

In case you haven't noticed, this kid ain't the second coming of Reggie White. He was a non-factor last year because he missed almost all of training camp. Now he might miss a lot of THIS training camp. You don't get better by missing reps.

FYI, I never used the word "bust" to describe him, but he's on that track.

Interesting you compare him to Reggie White, a player who had a completely different body-type, had a completely different set of skills and who ran in a completely different kind of defensive set.

There is no comparison, because guess what - the next 3-4 end you find that is a factor like Reggie White will be the first in NFL history. Spears' track to the top of his mountain could not be any straighter.

too bad he got hurt, but arthroscopic knee surgeries today are the equivalent of a tune up. he'll be ok by the end of camp. nothing to worry about. i'm more worried about our offensive line than anything. hopefully pettiti can grow up in a hurry (as a player) and ease our minds.

I'm sorry, but you're still "stuck on stupid." Couple points:

1) Reggie would have dominated in any defensive alignment. In fact, he had the perfect body for the 3-4.
2) Because Spears is no Reggie, that means he has to work that much harder to be a good player at this level. And you cant do that sitting in the jacuzzi.

Speculation. Every 3-4 end in history has suffered a drop in statistics, and check it, an end operating in the 3-4 has never led the league in sacks. Domination in the 3-4 looks much, much different than domination in the 4-3. Would he? Probably. But we don't know.

I find it hard to argue with the fact that Spears doesn't have the physical tools White did. Reggie White is arguably the greatest D-lineman in history. However, I found it curious that you picked him to compare to a rookie who played in a different set, which makes a monumental difference. Kind of skews your argument.

I don't even know why I'm focusing on the Reggie White part. It was the "non-factor" part of your argument that was ridiculous.
