Spears Played Well!

Spears plays decent every game, and played well here and there, such as last game. That's not a bust! He was a #22 pick and half of first rounders don't even end up being long-term starters.

You probably called Ebenezer Ekuban a bust, a guy who's gonna play 10 years in this league as a starter. There are plenty of 1st rounders who get hurt or just suck, never start for long. That's a bust! Every team can use a Spears, even if he's a little overpaid right now.

Dude, his base salary this year is $695,000. Yes, that's thousand.

Rookies don't make squat. Even first rounders.

I'm calling Shante Carver a bust. lol. Marcus meet Shante...

What about his signing bonus?
Not sure. But it was only a few million. And that's paid at signing. Not yearly.

Well he was the 20th pick, but I guess you were close enough. Let's say Spencer has 3 sacks over the next 3 years, he was picked around the same pick, would you consider him a bust?

What about Isaiah Stanback? If he doesn't get 3 sacks over the next 3 years is he a bust?

Oh, what's that you say? He plays a completely different position?

If Stanback has 3 TD's over the next 3 years, he's a bust, yeah.

*whoosh*

That is the sound of ideas flying over your head.

Nice one! High five!

The fact remains that Spears has shown a whole lot of nothing. You could plug a whole lot of other DE's in this league into his slot and get the same production. Nothing you say can change that.

Can't compare a 3-4 end to a 3-4 OLB. Spencer should get 10+ sacks in his prime. Spears would far exceed original expectations with 10.

I'd gladly take that from Spears. Hell, maybe he'll turn it up and show something, my point is that up to this point, he hasn't shown much. Plain and simple.

Is he elite, no, but stick most of these DE's in our D, and that side becomes a weakness vs the run. Put a DT there and you have to worry about our edge guys not hitting the QB, cause the pocket is clean. Spears wasn't worth the 20th pick, but is a decent player, and solid contributer.

But it does bother me how much he was talking this offseason.

Well who wouldn't want 10 sacks. My point was the 3-4 is designed for the OLBs to get most the sacks, not DEs, unlike a 4-3 team who 99% of the time have a DE lead the team in sacks not LB. Only 3-4 team who had a DE lead them in sacks, are the 49ers I think, cause Bryant Young had quit a few, but look at their D, it sucked.

Luis Castillo - 0 Sacks
Ty Warren - 1 Sack

Oh noes, these guys are terrible busts, cut them immediately.

He's played well in every game so far. Some people think sacks are the only sign of a good player.

Those same people were asking what was wrong with Ware after 2 games.

We call them "idiots" where I'm from.

you mean sacks aren't the only important defensive stat, will wonders never cease ;)

Nothing you can say can prove this either. Spears has been a very big part of how good our run D has been, and like it or not, if he was bad enough, Ware wouldn't have 3 sacks right now. At the end of the day, if Spears was as bad as some crazy fools here say, he wouldn't be playing. Like it or not, our coaches know more than you do.

I'm not saying Spears is a stud...

But he's not a bust. He played well against a weak oline. 1/2 sack, 1 tfl, 1-3 pressures. Averaged out over the season, if he got 8 sacks, 16 stops for a loss, and 16 pressures this year, we'd be really happy.

What we do have is a solid run plugger who's not much of a pass rusher. That's far from a bust. Bust=does little or nothing. He's just not up to expectations and hopes.
:hammer:

Spears reminds me a lot of another 3-4 DE SD's Igor Olshansky. He's not flashy but he really gets the job done against the run. I think SD is happy with him and no one is calling Olshansky, a 2nd-round pick, a bust.

Lets put it this way - if Spears couldn't play well against that deplorable OL - he never will.
