This is some great information. Thanks for the post.

Any edge that a d-lineman can get in the off season will pay nice dividends when the season starts, especially getting tutelage from a hall of famer that played with great technique and strength.

IMO, Spears will be much improved for two reasons, A) Contract year B) Absorbing as much as he can from the Manster is music to my ears.

Excellent news about the work and nice read dbair. Thanks. With Spears entering a "contract" year I have no doubt he will step it up on the field. Sadly, many players of this current era are often more focused on the ebb & flow of their contracts versus actual results on the field. That said, I am glad to hear MSpears is putting in some extra work & hope it pays off on the field.

shouldnt that be #9 not #8 in your sig?

As long as it's not how Randy can pound down the longnecks, it's a good thing.

TO was a story here and they are still gonna talk about it. I know some feel all this talk loses games, but I don't think there is any harm in talking about it.

The picture about TO is becoming clearer though, wouldn't you say. I mean if you believe the people who are actually in the locker room and not the Ed Werders, huh?
Oh brother.

I am beginning to wonder if you are capable of getting over it.

Wresting is a very effective means of controlling someone in a real street fight and it applies to everyday situations. Alot of the great MMA fighters like Matt Hughes and Randy Couture started as wrestlers before they went into MMA. However, Karate does help people with football since they are only allowed to use their hands. Why not teach someone the basics of getting hands off you when trying to rush the quarterback. Even Jerry Rice used Karate to beat the jam freely.
The only thing that concerns me is why is Spears going throw the trouble of learning new techniques now? Shouldn't he have been trying to be more of a sack artist before he hit his contract year? I really hope he doesn't get something like 6 sacks, signs a huge contract, and then pull a Ken Hamlin.

Everybody can't just go get sacks, might ought to let a few fellers be on the look-out fer them danged o runnin' backs with the ball. Them shifty little devils have big strong legs and can sneak right by a feller who's blinded by those chirping little sack birds swirling around their heads. Not to mention those persnickety dadgum tight ends tryin to sneek over the middle. But hey if we kin win danged o games 10 sacks to 9 points that's all that matters to me. Oughta beat any team if ya hold 'em to 3 field goals. !0 sacks to 9 points , that right there is a butt whoopin' deluxe.

If there isn't a CBA extension, Spears won't be an unrestricted free agent, will he?

Spending one off season using karate isn't going to do much for him.

I believe Marcus actually started it doing it last off season, if I'm not mistaken. Ware did it last season I know for sure, and he turned around and had a 20 sack season after "spending one off season using karate."

Good comparison... because Ware didn't really show much prior to last season.

Just 3 or 4 extra sacks. Imagine how many millions that would mean to Spears sack total.

I think Spears has improved. His first two years, he was painfully slow off the snap. Last year I thought he showed improvement. He still had no technique to fend off blocks or disengage from blocks. Randy White was the best I have ever seen at defeating blocks using his arms and hands. I think this will help Spears. He needs to stop wrestling and get away from blocks. Ratliff is terrific at this.

Spears sure catches a lot crap on this site.
It's only because some wish to see him as a 4-3 defensive end instead of a 3-4 defensive end.

Spears strikes me as just the sort of guy to try and turn it on in his contract year, a shame he didn't feel the need to up his work ethic till there was money on the line.

And for the record, I like him just fine.

I don't think he can turn it on and do his job. Look what happened with Tank last year. They would put him in to play a 2 technique and he would wildcat and leave his post. Bye Tank. Spears does his job. Is he a star? Nope. He's very solid.

Not sure what you wanted me to see there to change my perspective.

I'll say it again... one off season of this stuff won't make much of a difference.

He is not learning "wax on" and "wax off" from Mr. Miyagi. He is learning DL techniques and mental aspects of the game from a HOF player. Spending an off season learning and applying such techniques will help his overall game.

If he plays really well and has a great year it's only going to be so he can get a huge contract from another team. He'll likely be next seasons Canty, in regards to someone giving him far more than we'll be willing to.

Yeah let's start trying new things and training harder since it's our contract year.
