Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) has called for an independent investigation into the Spygate matter.

"It's my judgment that there ought to be an impartial investigation, an outside investigation, like the investigation that baseball had with former Senator George Mitchell," he said. Specter wouldn't rule out a Congressional investigation. Specter says Matt Walsh told him Patriots offensive players would memorize opposing signals during games and relay them to Charlie Weis. With that in mind, Weis would then instruct Tom Brady on the field. Walsh reportedly estimated it helped the Pats anticipate 75% of the defensive plays being called.

Spector is a complete freak'n moron! I guess the cancer must be effecting his judgement. He is more worried about football than this countries issues! There are men and women dying everyday overseas, people can't keep their homes and our X-Military persons are living under bridges without food and a roof over their heads after sacrificing their lives to give us freedom and Spector, the Tool he is, is worried about if the Pats cheated.

I knew it. By all means let's spend tax money to open the NFL version of Al Capone's vault.

Brilliant Senator Specter. [/sarcasm off]

That's not funny.

However, I do agree that this would purely be a waste of the public's money.

Screw Spector, he is getting what he deserves. He is about as crooked of a person than anybody out there. Can't wait for him to go!

I have no problem if the players recognized and memorized the calls during the game and then relay it to their OC.

So freaking what? That to me is really not cheating, it's just being aware of your surroudings and letting your team know what is going on! Kinda like watching out for bears while hunting deer and telling your friend to watch out for the bear if you see one (might be a bad analogy, I know)...

Now, the camera stuff could be called cheating, sure, but this is nothing at all.

I hate that the Patriots did what they did, but it needs to end, now! What about trying to get our service men and woman home, huh? Ya think that might be a little more important, Senior Spector? By the way, I wonder if he can still afford his house?

Are you saying there are MORE weapons of Mass Distraction?

Our country is going to heck in a handbag!

Have you ever considered running for any political office Hos.?

My guess is you would get 75% of the vote from this board. I don't think it would be drawn by any racial, gender, or partisan lines. The 25% would just likely be people who you've squelched over the years. :D

Time to give it up, Specter. The Pats lost the Super Bowl. That's humiliation enough.

I'm sure what Spectre is calling for is way cheaper to the US gov't than what the US would spend on, say the Iraq War, on one given day...

BTW, I'm sure that Spectre said many things about what Walsh said. This one that is not cheating may have just been one of them.

That synopsis doesn't exactly say what the article says.

The synopsis says, "players would memorize opposing signals during games and relay them to Charlie Weis."

But the article ACTUALLY says, "During the meeting it was explained to the player how the signal tapes would be used. According to Specter's recount of what Walsh detailed to him, the offensive player, who was on the sidelines for the game, would memorize the signals then watch for the Tampa Bay defensive calls during the game. He would then pass the call along to Weis, who would give instructions to the quarterback on the field. Specter's statement said that the offensive player told Walsh that it helped the Patriots anticipate 75 percent of the defensive plays being called."

In other words, he says they used the tapes to memorize signals, then watch for them during the game.

Specter calls for independent investigation
Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff May 14, 2008 01:24 PM

WASHINGTON -- Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter called today for an independent investigation into the Patriots' illegal taping practices, citing what he called an obvious conflict between the interest of the NFL and the public interest.

"After a lot of consideration it's my judgment that there ought to be an impartial investigation, an outside investigation, like the [steroids] investigation that baseball had with former [Maine] Senator George Mitchell," said Specter at a Capitol Hill news conference.

Specter, who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, stopped short of saying the government would conduct an investigation if the NFL didn't do so, but didn't rule out Congressional hearings to look into the matter, if action wasn't taken.

Specter met with former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh for three hours yesterday in his Hart Senate Office Building office. He said that Walsh told him that a former offensive player for the Patriots told Walsh a few days before a Sept. 11, 2000 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that the offensive player was called into a meeting with head coach Bill Belichick, then offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and Belichick confidant Ernie Adams. During the meeting it was explained to the player how the signal tapes would be used.

According to Specter's recount of what Walsh detailed to him, the offensive player, who was on the sidelines for the game, would memorize the signals then watch for the Tampa Bay defensive calls during the game. He would then pass the call along to Weis, who would give instructions to the quarterback on the field.

Specter's statement said that the offensive player told Walsh that it helped the Patriots anticipate 75 percent of the defensive plays being called.

The senator also said that Walsh, who worked for the Patriots from 1997 to 2003, told him that as a season-ticket holder he witnessed Steve Scarnecchia, the son of Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia and currently the New York Jets video director, taping games during the 2002, 2003 and 2004 seasons.

The games that Specter cited, according to his meeting with Walsh, were Sept. 9, 2002 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Nov. 16, 2003, against the Dallas Cowboys and Oct. 31, 2004 against the Steelers, a 34-20 New England loss that ended their record 21-game winning streak.

According to Specter, Walsh didn't tell NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about witnessing those games because he was not asked.

Specter said he was also troubled by the fact that Walsh told him that Dan Goldberg, whom Walsh identified as a Patriots attorney, was present at his NFL interview and allowed to ask questions. Specter, a former Philadelphia district attorney, said such a practice "strains credulity."

"What is necessary is an objective investigation," said Specter. "This has not been objective."

You mean little Bill stole big Bill's signals?:lmao: I remember that game, we could have won that game if Witten (I think) didn't drop a pass right into a Patriot linebacker's arms. Freakin almost beat them in their house with Quincy as the QB!

Wow... which would implicate many of the players on the team....

After reading the entire article now. Would you like a moment to edit your post here? Sure beat the senator up over wanting an independent investigation. All well and good but what you posted here is not how I read the article. :p:

I don't think he's asking for a federal investigation. He mentioned using one like was headed by George Mitchell. MLB hired Mitchell to do the independent investigation, not the U.S. government.

TonyRomo#9

i agree, i think an impartial investigation would do good, it will not cost much at all, people need to stop over reacting about that, and as for him having better things on his plate, what is it? give me something that noone else is currently addressing? is anything being neglected cause of this? no.

plus our soldiers over there are fighting for our freedom, and fighting for americe, so that things like the NFL can exist. don't we owe it to them that we not make that in vein and make sure it is all actual sport, and not unfair advantages?
