I hear you. Makes sense. But I'd see just how much it would take first to re-sign Leary.

It's a shame that Chaz cant stay on the field for more than a commercial break. You literally cant even include him in future plans beyond him being a backup. When he clearly has above average starting RT ability.

So is the belief at the Star that Collins cant play RT at the NFL level?

They'll talk with Leary at some point.

I don't think Collins has the feet to play T.

If our starting OL next year isn't Smith Leary Frederick Martin Collins I will be pissed.

Tell Doug Free he can hitch a ride with Romo.
I'd rather Smith Collins Frederick Martin Green. You get younger at two positions and Collins has already proven he can play guard, not sure about tackle. Green has also proven he's worth a look during this season.

It would great if Leary gave the Boys a hometown discount but I don't see it happening. I think Collins is the short-term answer at left guard.

Collins reminds me of Kevin Gogan. Gogan was a mauler in the running game but he was a complete failure at right tackle. He did not have the feet. He excelled at guard and became a Pro Bowler with the Raiders. Like Collins, he was great in the running game and average as a pass blocker. Collins can get better as a pass blocker, though.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. If you aren't using Collins at OT (in the Cowboys case, RT), you aren't getting his full potential as a lineman. He has the lateral mobility and nastiness that reminds me of a young Erik Williams.

Erik Williams had sweet feet -- at least before his accident -- and Collins does not. Think Kevin Gogan.

Collins has proven himself, Tapper is not a proven NFL player. Collins can back up 4 positions on the OL . Easy Choice Collins by a mile.

True, dallasdave, but Tapper might be able to provide something the Cowboys lack: a consistent pass rush from the end position. I would take that chance.

Dallas is allowed to bring one player off IR in a season. Collins walking boot came off 3 weeks ago. Recovery is 8-12 weeks from his Oct 3rd surgery date. Collins recovery is at exactly 8 weeks. Who wants to add him to titanic offensive line?
love L. hope to meet him soon or this off-season at the latest.

but the line is working well right now but having him there as depth and his talent *if* we need him would be phenomenal. could you imagine going from the crap line we used to have to having to make hard choices like this *and* have the best backup qb in the league?

yup Leary may be better right now but he is at his ceiling, lets not forget it took leary 3 years to get to the point he is at, and all those saying collins is not as good as leary, Collins is in his 2nd year.

His ceiling is pretty damn high, then. And I love Collins, but let's not brush off how awesome Leary is. He's having a pro bowl season, J.

Right now we're arguing between an already pro bowl level guard (Leary) vs a potential all-pro level guard (Collins).

Tough decisions. But great ones to have.

I agree with you, Collins is better then Leary

Based on what? You can argue he has an elite ceiling, but what has he shown that makes him better, now? He has flashed elite talent (namely, the pancake and speed at the second-level), but lacks consistency thus far (admittedly, pre-injury).

I want all five of these guys on the line. Keep pushing the salary cap forward. Leary won't sign for 6, but maybe 7. Keep pushing the cap forward. We've been doing it for years. Never let it catch up, keep pushing it forward.

In theory, is this feasible with restructures every off season @bkight13?

I've heard that the salary cap is more posturing than truth, so then maybe we can gain a competitive advantage, in theory, by structuring contracts such as those of T Smith, T Craw etc and just keep pushing them forward (restructuring)?? Is this feasible. Then sign whomever the hell we want?

Let it catch up to us in 2030 or something and just field a team of scrubs while we pay off the debt for a couple seasons and start over? Lol

Doug Free is a hell of a RT, Bleu. Very solid. This narrative that Free is a bad RT is weird.

Free has got to be the most under appreciated (by the fans) player on the Cowboys roster. Carr might be a close second.

All he (Free) does is show up each week and fight, scrap and battle. He may not win each play but he is not a liability. Weakest link, maybe, but not a liability.

Collins is better in the pass game and run game. Just my opinion from what I see. It's not a knock on Leary at all. I would keep Leary at LG and put Collins at RT

Hell Lawrence his rookie year was not consistent what makes tapper will be able offer something with a lower pedigree
