He won't be. But he'll be able to take snaps in pass rush situations fairly quickly on a purely rotational basis a week or so after he's back to practice.
I was dubious about the micro fracture surgery working for him at all. And I don't know much about the process of developing new cartilage, but, from what I understand, either it's effective or it's not, and they can confirm the cartilage regrowth in this case. So, if the strength has really returned and sufficient cartilage has been replaced, we're actually in a pretty good position with Spencer here early in the season. If he's healthy--and it looks like he will be--then the issue is conditioning. In which case, we can use him situationally as soon as he's back in the roster and ramp him up to the point late in the season where he's taking significant reps. On the strong side, we've got Crawford and Selvie to spell him, which is good depth. Late in the year, we'll have Lawrence back as well if we're playing him at the rush end. It's a pretty good situation.
The only question is whether or not he can alleviate the thin DE problem early in the season. It sounds like he won't help much in that regard, unfortunately.
