Maybe so, they will get a good test this weekend vs last years 3rd ranked rushing team. 9ers were one of the few teams who actually ran the ball more times (509 attempts) than threw the ball (417 attempts) Someone forgot to tell them and Seattle this is a passing league. lol

Yes. My skepticism about the defense doesn't keep me from looking forward to this game and hoping that the defense truly does surprise me.

I did not take your skepticism as meaning you were pulling against the Cowboys. I pretty much agree that if SF is able to run at will as we saw this defense allow in pre-season then it is going to be a rough day. Having said that getting 3 starting DL in the lineup who saw little to no pre-season should be a big boost for this unit. I'm sure now that this is reg season Marinelli will be more focused on defending an offense system and opposing players as opposed to playing straight up with backups. Not to mention we should have pretty much the entire secondary playing together for the 1st time this season. I don't recall any pre season game that had Carr, Claiborne, Church and Wilcox all playing together.

"With everyone healthy" I could see this defense being improved over last year. It's hard to believe that everyone will be healthy though, setbacks and incomplete recoveries seems more likely, but some good luck could change all that!
Yes. I'm hoping for 31st in points allowed. Not setting the bar too high:)

Minus the player who was the best member of that secondary last year. Not sure either how much we should expect 3 starting DL who saw little to no preseason to contribute, although Selvie looked pretty good in his brief appearance. (Of course, I don't think one of those guys you're counting will be starting.)

We'll definitely see what Marinelli's got, but I feel sorry for him that we haven't given him more to work with.

I would be more concerned if we were talking Lawrence who as a rookie is green, the return of Melton, Selvie, McClain, Crawford are a bit more experienced and should not be over whelmed.

Frankly, I'd rather see Lawrence in there because he at least has growth potential.

I think Selvie will be solid. He's an inconsistent pass rusher who is pretty decent against the run.

I don't know where Melton is at this point, but he's more likely to be up and down after not much work this summer coming off a year-long injury. Long term, I think he can get back to the player he was in Chicago.

I have no expectations for McClain to be anything more than what he's been up to this point in his career, which is not much. Hayden will start, and he's not much more than a speed bump.

I didn't see any reason in the preseason to be excited about Crawford. I think like Selvie, he'll be decent against the run but won't provide much of a pass rush.

Not sure on Mincey, but didn't see much to be excited about in the preseason either against the run or pass.

Along with Selvie, Davon Coleman probably looked the best of the DL we put out there this summer, but he was hit and miss.

Just don't see why we should expect this unit to suddenly turn it on.

I'm not saying I would not want Lawrence back but I would expect it will take him more time to adjust than it will for a vet. I think guys like Melton will be ready and know what to expect as opposed to a rookie. Sorry I think people watching guys who are backup playing as 1st unit and freaking out in pre season is over blown. I think having starter playing next to each other will show themselves as capable players.
