Jday, good write-up - as we have become accostumed, it is thoughtful, balanced and compelling.

I have a slightly different view with regard to replacing Garrett. While he might be an ideal fit for Jerry, I (perhaps, wrongly) still believe we could attract a top-notch coach - particularly from the college coaching ranks.

As an owner, Jerry is one of the best. He has built a sports empire, is loyal to a fault and engenders good support from the players. Unfortunately, the GM sucks.

I would like to think that we can do better than Garrett.

Milk is $2.99 per gallon. That is higher than a gallon of gasoline in my area. You spill it and I am going to make you lick it up from the table :)

1. I would fire Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan NOW!!!!! Hire Mike Martz to be the OC until the season is over. Martz, Hauck, Brown, and most of the offensive staff know each other, should survive the year, and Mike Martz would be a good evaluater and mentor of Dak Prescott who is been shell shocked by a stupid coaching.
2. I would name Gary Brown or Will McClay (coached Jones's Desperadoes) interim HC. This satisfies the Rooney rule to interview them for the HC and allows me to search for a HC.
3. I will keep the Defensive staff as is with Kris Richard and tell the next head coach he comes with the package. When you hear who I will name as the next Cowboys HC. That will be no problem.
4. After and exhausting Cowboys HC search, I would name Will McClay, General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys. If you do not, he is going to get that offer from someone else and leave. This would also take the heat off me for evading the Rooney Rule to get the HC I want.
5. Will McClay, GM of the Dallas Cowboys will hire Washington University Head Coach Chris Petersen as Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Therefore I give all those ex Boise State football players on the Cowboys roster a coach they can play hard for and a coach that can actually coach. Also, because he is an offensive minded coach he will develop Dak and develop his new OC Kellen Moore his former All American QB. Finally, coming from the Washington area he knows and respects Kris Richard so it is no problem keeping him as DC.
6. With Kris Richards as DC, I would allow Marinelli to stay as DL coach (his replacement is already on the staff, Leon Lett) but I would bring in both Dennis Thurman ex Cowboys and former DC as secondary coach and mentor and Mike Singletary as LB coach. You are going to lose Kris Richards to be a HC somewhere after 2019 so now you have 2 coaches on the staff that can immediately take over as the new DC.
7. Now that I have taken Jerry Jones from the GM role giving it to a man he likes, admires, and Jones will still feel in GM control. But McClay is a man the Jerry listens too that knows football. Jerry has not had that directly running the franchise since Jimmy Johnson.

Yes, I know I am a genius scoring a 140 IQ score. But I do not get along with others. Because they do stupid things like Jerry Jones who knows how to make money but is not smart enough to make money and have a Super Bowl contending team every year.

If you have seen Oklahoma, Linclon Riley is a one trick pony and his offense, The spread offense Leach Texas Tech style, will need 2-3 years to adjust to the pros. Chris Petersen runs pro, west coast, shotgun, spread, and the statue of Liberty offense. Ask Oklahoma.
It seems you have given this far more thought than I devoted to it this morning...thanks for sharing!

It's not so much that I'm married to Chip Kelly as OC; I just want Jerry to understand that he has a QB from one side of the schematic bell-curve being coached by a coordinator from the exact opposite side of that bell-curve. By design, this is supposed to fail when you really think about it. I mean, if they were up against college teams, maybe they could make it work but against professional teams with professional players and professional coaches who also happen to be playing on the same page, the Cowboys have very little chance of being successful given their current construction.

To be clear, from a roster perspective, there is very little to not like about that 53; you can win with that (if had my druthers, I would add an upgrade to Safety, Tight End, and maybe a space-eating DT, but other than that).

This team really is ready-made to win...with the right offensive mind.

Alright...I'll bite....I suspect I'll regret this but curiosity did kill that cat...

What did Garrett do or not do last night that should be obvious to everyone making their determinations to the contrary not worthy of serious consideration?

Last time I checked, it was the responsibility of the head coach to have his team ready to play.

Like Nick Eatman said today, the team looked like they had 2 hours to prepare for the game, not 2 weeks.

The fact that you dont see this as a problem is what I was referring to...…..hell, even the guys that work at the Star and have their paychecks signed by Jerry Jones are calling for Garrett's head on a platter today.

So Garrett should stay and Linehan should be fired? Funny, but in 2010 everyone thought Phillips should be fired after the Green Bay disaster and the guy calling the plays got a promotion. As a matter of fact, Garrett went against Phillips wishes in the Commanders game and it cost them the game. Garrett should have been FIRED right along with Phillips. Some here will repeat the mantra that the team quit on Phillips and the defense stopped tackling---kind of like last night. GARRETT NEEDS TO GO!!!

If we want to talk about the fantasy of getting Lincoln Riley in here there’s things going for you and against you. Going for you is LR may be emotionally swayed by growing up in Muleshoe and now having the chance to run the Cowboys. Also, Jerry will be as likely as any owner to give him a Gruden-like contract to take the job. LR is also losing a Heisman-level QB and likely has a big drop in talent at the position for next year. Reasons against: working in a dysfunctional system for Jerry, having plenty of other options including keeping your current job, not having a defined role in who gets to be on your team, and dealing with an unknown dynamic once Jerry steps away.

As a Sooner I hope LR stays far from this mess but if the money is big enough he may just have to bite.

To be fair to Kelly, look at who he had at QB in both of his attempts. Not too many head coaches are going to find success with the QB's he had. Mark Sanchez was the guy in Philly and he Kaepernick with the 49ers when the team was on the decline...much of which was admittedly because of him which is why I just want Kelly or someone like him as OC.
I don't like Kelly. never did it. never liked the gimmicky offense. and Harbaugh took the niners to the superbowl and on the brink of winning it with Kapernick....Kelly system just didn't work, doesn't work. the fast paced offense is just not functional in the NFL. in 50+ years, only two teams pulled it off and they had a bunch of HOFers on the team, the bills and the bengals. neither won a superbowl.

Garrett would be completely dependent upon the two Coordinators to keep up with game day preparation and changes, then.
Truth be told, the situation with Garrett is not ideal. If I had my druthers, Jerry Jones wouldn't be GM; he'd be a silent partner owner, as is much of the league. Will McClay would be GM and we would have a coach that has experience winning with a QB like Dak. Admittedly, that's not Garrett, who has very little experience in winning period, outside of being the back up QB for a Super Bowl winning team.

The problem in the above scenario is reality.

The reality is Jerry will be GM of the Dallas Cowboys until the day he dies. That ain't changing.

The reality is not every Head Coach can work for Jerry & company and submit to the precepts of this organization.

The reality is Jason Garrett is a good administrator who can weather the Jones's, making him almost ideal for the Head Coach role, all things considered. The problem right now is what I said in the OP as well as another response prior to this one:

Dak is a QB that exist on one side of the NFL schematic bell-curve and Linehan is a coach who has always coached QB's from the other side. Linehan and Dak is simply a marriage bound to fail...and that, I believe, is why this offense is struggling.

Then Garrett needed to be more involved and controlling the parameters of his coordinators...there just does not exist a functional control of team developments, preparation, and in game change. Clapping doesn't direct or even identify with a plan in hand.

Many leadership styles, but not all are effective. Garrett just doesn't have an in game eye...nor judging his coordinators when actions are executed. Sorry, this dooms Jerry if he just wants a figure head over the game operations.

I'm with you brother.

To be clear, I'm not saying I love Garrett as a head coach...I think he can be good, just not sure if he'll ever be great. I do respect him as a person, though. And I agree with you, I think we could do better, I'm just not sure the Jones' could....hope I'm wrong because I suspect something will absolutely be done by year end barring some crazy turn-around.

So, if Jerry Jones absolutely insist upon having Garrett as his head coach, so be it. The very least he could do though is find an OC adept at using QB's like Dak. That would seem to be the obvious things, but what do I know?

Thanks for reading and the kudas, as always good sir!

My thoughts that unlike in 2016..

this team no longer plays for Garrett.

That year we lauded the players for bonding together and overcoming losing Romo and winning.

Nothing like that has happened in the last 2 seasons.

SO..

How does Garrett get that back?

Its not Linehan.

Its Garrett and Jerrah.

I do not think you get it back.

Its much easier to let Garrett go and get a new HC.

You can replace a HC and his assistants much easier than replacing 53 players.

The day is coming.

Next week..next month..next year.

Whomever Jerrah has on his shortlist of HC candidates is being updated as we speak.

Watch the college games over the holidays and pay attention to who is looking at leaving college for the pros.

We will figure prominently in those conversations.

Like they said in a movie, Titans know exactly where to hit us, when to hit us and how to hit us. That is a coaching difference not talent. I guess Titan’s coaches didn’t go to World Series

I disagree.

While DC.com is a great (re)source for information, beware of hyperbole that tends to run rampant in the days closely following a loss, be it local, national or mothership media.. The Cowboys did not look ill-prepared going into the game, but they certainly looked that way down the stretch, which has more to do with what was happening in the moment, not what happened in the days leading up to it.

My guess is, though, you went into the game already hating Garrett and are now using what happened to confirm what you already believed. That is why I don't see what see. I don't hate anyone, other than the devil inside me.

Okay....

But if you want to win with Dak, that's how you gotta play it. If you are for getting rid of Dak, you and I are having two completely different conversations.

Therein is the rub good sir. No one outside of the organization has any idea what the parameters are for Garrett and his coordinators. Does Garrett really have a say? Last I heard, Garrett shooed him out of the coordinators office and told him to be a "walk around" head coach. From what I understand, that is exactly what he has done since. I'd imagine, if left to Garrett, Linehan wouldn't have been added to the staff in the first place. He settled on Linehan because Jerry wasn't going to let him call the offensive plays...or at least, that's my understanding.

So, if I have to accept Jerry as GM, and Jason as the only head coach that can work for Jerry, fine. That's what I'll do.

But for now, having Dak as a QB and Linehan as OC is like having a Lion for a QB and a Lamb for a playcaller. This is me pointing that out and hoping for the sake of this fanbase that something is done about it...but I'm not holding my breath.

Not sold on Chip Kelly, I think he is overrated and UCLA has a way to go. But I understand what you mean that this Garrett/Linehan scheme is not Dak friendly. However that 53 man roster was the problem from the beginning of the year. No. no. 1 WR, no no. 1 TE, and no, no.1 C. No QB in Cowboys history has not had their returning no.1 WR, no. 1 TE, and no. 1 center from the previous year. Dak had no one to trust to throw short, deep, or trust with OL calls. Also, that K is not making us forget Dan Bailey. But that's what happens when your Team is owned by the GM and Head Coach.

Some fine words for a fan...and you are a very realistic person. Both are great for a discussion among other Cowboys fans. Great work there...

I'm afraid, for Jerry, this ghost in the closet isn't going away...and the media is fully aware of just how and why this is an intense issue for the Cowboys/Jerry.

Kind of like love...that truly isn't given back, until set free.

Linehan alone is responsible for bringing Kellen along from his Detroit days. Both need to be run out of town. They obviously have no clue what they're doing at the QB position.

I wouldn't make that a blanket statement. If they had a traditional pocket passer, of the higher pick echelon, I could see them having success because that's their QB style background.

Dak is a completely different type of QB who wins by being kept on the move and in a rhythm. I can't help but think they are trying to convert him into something he's not when they should be trying to win with him the best way he knows how.
