I love this time of year because it actually feels like Christmas in the Spring. Draft week is finally here and this mock will look quite different from my last one.
Round 1: Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
McCourty very well may not be on the board when the Cowboys select, as the Ravens have serious interest in the player. I'm assuming TE Jermaine Gresham will also be on the board, so him and McCourty could be the two players the Ravens will decide between. If they go with Gresham, McCourty is definitely the man for Dallas. He fills two needs for one draft pick, returner and dime cornerback. This move will allow Alan Ball to move full-time to safety, unless we land a free agent like OJ Atogwe (Hos, I used an "A" this time
). A safe, solid pick that will pay dividends down the road when Newman decides to hang up the boots.
Round 2: ***TRADE*** Dallas trades DE Marcus Spears and its 2nd round pick to move up and selects:
Tyson Alualu, DE/DT, California
This was the perfect opportunity to deal with disgruntled Spears. Alualu is a hot name that is moving up boards, due to his versatility and ability to play the five and three technique in the 34. I feel like will be the time Dallas deals a player, and it makes perfect sense because Spears is a restricted free agent, and you'll be able to sign Alualu for a much less price for the next 4-5 years.
Round 3: JD Walton, C, Baylor
The Cowboys stay put here, and go with Gurode's future replacement at center. I'm honestly not sure about Walton's ability to play guard, but he's a smart and instinctive player who will be best suited at center. Walton allows flexibility on the offensive line. If a player such as Kosier gets injured again, this would allow Gurode to slide over to guard, and Walton can fill in at center. This is a solid pick and the Cowboys are obviously interested in him after bringing him in for Dallas Day.
Round 4: I see Jerry trading down here to get that 5th round pick back, while getting another 6th as well. Friday going into Saturday will be an important part of the draft and Jerry will want a pick in that first round of Saturday.
Round 5: Marshall Newhouse, OG/OT, Texas Christian
A solid, developmental pick who is probably best suited at guard in the pros. The Cowboys do have interest in the kid and is GREAT value for the 5th round. Players like Holland and McQuistan will not be on the roster in 2010, so another interior lineman will definitely be needed to develop. You already drafted your future center in Walton, and now you get your developmental guard to hopefully take over for Kosier in the next year or two.
Round 6a: Emmanuel Sanders, WR, SMU
Round 6b: John Connor, FB, Kentucky
Round 7: Aaron Morgan, DE/OLB, Louisiana-Monroe
Enjoy! All thoughts, comments and concerns are welcomed.
